A quick look at the ‘Pigs weekend, along with a view notes.
Friday–Lehigh Valley closed out their series in Rochester with a 10-3 loss to the RedWings, splitting their series. The ‘Pigs jumped to an early 1-0 lead, however starter Brian Mazone was hit hard in the 5th inning, giving up 5 runs, allowing Rochester to take a lead they didnt relinquish. Back to back homers by Ransom (5) and Tracy (2), cut the lead temporarily to 5-3, however the lead grew once again when Rochester added a run in the 6th. Mazone left after five innings, having allowed 5 runs on 7 hits. He didnt walk a batter and struck out 3. Both Ehren Wasserman and Mike Zagurski got shelled in relief, resulting in the 10-3 final.
Saturday–Ryan Vogelsong had his fairly typical control problems in the first inning of the ‘Pigs game against Indianapolis on Saturday, as he walked two, and both runners went on to score as the Indians jumped out to a first inning lead, that was quickly matched when John Mayberry launced his third homer of the year, a two run shot. Indianpolis added another in the 2nd, making it 3-2. Indianapolis added another in the 6th, before the ‘Pigs exploded for a five run bottom half, making it 7-4 Lehigh Valley. A two run double by Luis Maza, and an RBI double by Dane Sardina were the big blows. Sardinha added a 3 run homer in the 8th, making it 10-4. The Indians scored two off of Oscar Villareal, accounting for the 10-6 final. Big nights at the plate from Maza (2-4, r, 2RBI), Mayberry (3-5, 2R, HR, 2RBI), and Sardinha (2-4, 2r, 2b, hr, 4rbi). Ryan Vogelsong (1-1) got the win, going six innings, giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 5.
Sunday–Lehigh Valley was hurt early and often by the top of the Indianapolis lineup in the 5-4 ‘Pigs loss Sunday afternoon. Jose Tabata and Neil Walker were a combined 6-8 with five runs, 3 RBI and 4 SB in the loss, during which Lehigh Valley put up four late runs to make the game close. Two RBI singles by Rich Thompson put the heat on Indianapolis but the 8th inning rally was cut short when Andy Tracy struck out with the go ahead runner on base. Nate Bump (3-1) got the start and took the loss, giving up 5 runs in his five innings on work on 7 hits. He walked one and struck out 7. Thompson had a huge game for the ‘Pigs, going 3-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and 2 RBI’s. Andy Tracy, whose average dipped to .205, left four more runners on base out of the cleanup hole.
Notes: Cody Ransom made his first start of the season in the outfield (RF) on Saturday night. Both Chris Duffy and DeWayne Wise were out injured. Wise has missed the last several games with a groin injury and is day to day, while Duffy injured himself while making a diving catch in the game Friday evening. He has “concussion like” symptoms, and he too, is day to day. The start was a rough one for Ransom who made an error almost immediately, and looked uncomfortable on several other balls hit to him.
—Scott Mathieson threw another scoreless inning in relief on Sunday. His ERA remains below 1.00.
—Melvin Dorta has hit in 8 of his 9 games with the IronPigs.
— Catcher Dane Sardinha has hit safely in 6 of his 7 games, hitting .364 thus far.
Probables: Monday: Savery; Tuesday: Carpenter; Thursday: Mazone
Mathieson topped out at 98 today, 93-96 consistently. He seemed less confident with breaking and off-speed stuff.
He throws that top speed stuff effortlessly, though. Fun to watch.

Thanks for this gregg. Have you heard anything, or seen for yourself, how Mayberry is doing in CF?

Any hope for Mayberry to be more than a 4th outfielder with his improved plate discipline?

My own impression, as an untrained observer–but ironpig season ticket holder–is that Mayberrry looks much more like a hitter this year, and less like a homer/strikeout guy. I can’t necessarily observe the difference with his ‘new swing,’ but I do think he’s benefiting from consistent at-bats in the three hole.
I think he can hold his own in CF–even at the major league level–but is not a top-end defensive outfielder. As an ironpig fan, I think I’d rather Thompson or Duffy or Wise in CF, but I don’t shudder with Mayberry in CF like I do with Ransom in RF. If that helps…

Boston–
I have seen Mayberry in Center 3 times. He has had a bit of trouble picking up the ball because of the different angle from that he is used to but even through those games, he is noticably more comfortable. If he saw regular playing time in CF, he would be a capable CF in my opinion. I am trying to hold back some of my enthusiasm with Mayberry because it is so early, but even in batting practice he looks more confidant this year.

Any of the IronPigs starting pitchers look like they could do better than Kendrick right now?

Frankly no. Nate Bump has a good ERA but the same strikeout issues that plague Kendrick. Vogelsong’s control is awful and Carpenter did little to inspire confidence when I saw him.

Thanks IronPig209 and Gregg! Glad to hear he is looking better at the plate too.

echo Alan: I was hopeful for Nate Bump, but he didn’t look so good yesterday. He depends on movement on his sinker, and it wasn’t sinking yesterday (hot and humid? related?).
Duckworth looked OK, but in limited duty, and is now in the pen. What are the thoughts, of those in the know, about plans for Bastardo? Could he be moved back to a starter if he gets sent down?

As far as the starting pitching goes, Carpenter has not looked good other than his last start, Bump just had a very rough outing…the guy with the best pure stuff is probably Ryan Vogelsong, but he struggles mightily with his control. As far as Bastardo goes, I highly doubt he is switched again into the rotation.

Looking at the numbers that is what I assumed…not sure why the Phils are waiting to sign Pedro at this point.
