  1. My next ten:

    1. Steve Susdorf
    2. Anthony Hewitt
    3. Mike Zagurski
    4. Kelly Dugan
    5. Austin Hyatt
    6. Sergio Escalona
    7. Jon Pettibone
    8. Rudney Balentien
    9. Tim Kennelly
    10. Michael Cisco

That list is a month old. If I redid it, I’d move Altherr and Hudson up, and Pettibone down. Right outside that group I have international signee Miguel Nunez. We haven’t mentioned him but he’s worth a look.

  2. If I were to add 10 more to the reader top 30, including some of my personal top 30 not included here, plus some of the younger potential guys who haven’t shown anything yet, I’d pick the following 10 (the guys from my top 30 are first, and in my order. I did not consider anyone from DSL?VSL)

    31. Cisco
    32. Kennelly
    33. Hyatt
    34. Edgar Garcia
    35. Susdorf
    36. Dugan
    37. Kyrell Hudson
    38. Hewitt
    39. Escalona
    40. Cesar Hernandez

  3. Alan,
BTW, Pettibone from your list of additionals was already on the top 30, so you get to add another.

  4. What scares me about this list is between C,2B,SS,3B we have exactly 3 players. that is a little disconcerting. A good 4 of these 19 pitchers will have to pan out to make it worthwhile. Do we really think 21% of these pitchers will make the show and be of material impact?

  5. Trading Travis, Lou and Jason D. really hurt the depth at important positions. I don’t think having 19 pitchers in the top 30 is necessarily bad but it is -as Dude says- a little disconcerting.
By year end I’d like to see a little more balance. A good draft coupled with solid international signings at C,SS,3B positions would make me feel better about the overall health of the farm system. A quantum leap in performance from someone like Mattair would also help.

  6. The list would be less ‘disconcerting’ if players like Cesar Hernandez, Harold Garcia, and Kennelly were considered. Seems every round a new mediocre arm was intoduced to the list.

  7. What are people’s thoughts on Jiwan James… why is he so highly rated? What is setting him apart from the other “tools” guys?

  8. It just seems that the Lower Minors have the
greatest number of players with a ‘pulse’
that I have ever known with the Phillies.

It will be great to look back 1 year from now
    to see who has advanced.

  9. There’s a facebook rumor floating around the ‘net that Collier is having hand/wrist surgery. Anyone know if there’s any truth to it?

  10. Sir Alden —
I’d like to believe that’s true, but we may learn to our chagrin that on the position player side, most of these guys are just track stars posing as baseball players. Castro, as does Jiwan James, has some numbers behind him at this point, not great numbers, but at least decent. It really has yet to be determined whether most of these guys just have the same scouting reports that gave us Jeff Jackson, Reggie Taylor and Greg Golson (who has now fallen of the Texas top 30, just as Mayberry has fallen off of ours).

  11. I believe Golson is in the Yankees system now. I am hopeful that some of these athletic guys will pick up some pointers just watching Chase prepare and perform.
I am excited that we are so close to games again 🙂

  12. At least at the time the BA Prospect Handbook went to press, Golson was still in the Texas organization, but simply listed as unranked CF depth.

I don’t think the issue with these athletic guys is a lack of preparation or attitude, so I doubt watching Chase prepare will help them. What they need is basic baseball skills, such a pitch recognition and just putting their bat on the ball.

Watching a guy like Chase prepare might help a guy who is lazy and not in great shape, but our young OF are in great shape. I have seen some guys at Reading and Allentown, who looked a little heavy last season.

  13. I see BA ranks Carlos Monasterios as the #31 Dodgers’ prospect. Of course, it’s possible he comes back to us at some point during the season.

  14. Some of the guys who played in the last Instructional League game back in October but not mentioned in any posts here should get at least a mention for a possible break out year in 2010. Lefty Jacob Diekman with his 3/4 arm delivery pitched an impressive two strike out 8th inning and should be at no lower than Clearwater. Adam Buschini played the entire game at third and handled a couple of chances and had a base hit should be at Lakewood . Lefthanded hitting Marlon Mitchell took over for Valle behind the plate and lined a single to center will probably be Williamsport’s catcher. And slick fielding Darin Ruf played the entire game at first probably will be Lakewood’s first baseman this year.

  15. Buschini is a sleeper prospect, IMO. He showed good plate discipline, average power, and stole 15 bases. Batting averages are flukish and if Buschini adds to it, his numbers suddenly look decent overall.
