  1. Leandro Castro.
Age appropriate for his league. In pitchers league, showed power and speed. Can play CF.

  2. Back to Petitbone. I say the realized potential here would exceed what the other pitchers might given the same . And there still are some pitchers to work in. In addition to some of the players on the list they can add; Julio Rodriguez, Jesus Sanchez for consideration shortly , some others later on. Castro they can softpedal for a couple more rounds, for though he has physical gifts he is not likely to be a big home run hitter and were he to arrive as a starting OF what would you have? As position players go previously named OF’s on the list would certainly edge Castro, and I would present Anthony Hewitt and the SS Jonathon Villar as close to and maybe exceeding also.

  3. fyi –

The Philadelphia Daily News ran an article this morning stating that our man Brody Colvin was arrested in New Orleans for disturbing the peace, simple battery and resisting an officer. These are misdemeanor charges.

Not what you want to hear when the team has spent $900k for a bonus, but perhaps this will be a wake up call for him. It doesn’t help that he’s under legal drinking age and was in the part of town where the college bars are located.

  4. It’s not that big of a deal, I had a similiar incident on martigras in 2001, I was also 19. And I turned out just fine.

  5. Other – Kelly Dugan

Not that I’m sold on him as a prospect but I’d like to think our top pick from last year’s draft is at least worth mentioning in our top 20 prospects?!?!?

  6. I’ll take Shreve here because I think he’s another pitcher with a big upside. The Colvin incident is not good, I’m sure Dickie Noles will be meeting with Colvin soon if he hasn’t already.

  7. I hope the Colvin thing is just “boys being boys” but if he was my son, I’d kick his butt all the way to Arkansas.

  8. Fyi – Its interesting to me that Bill Conlin wrote that the Phils were right to trade Lee, who they would never be able to sign long term, for three good prospects. He’s usually pretty harsh on the team so his perspective is making me think twice. Also, there’s a good article on Dom Brown on comcast sportsnet.com about he knows this is an important year for him and he knows he has to put up numbers.

  9. Leandro Castro again. The next 2 of my top 20, Jesus Sanchez and Michael Schwimer are not even on the board yet, so it may take the rest of this 30 for for me to vote for all of my top 20. Then, I have Anthony Hewitt #21. Not that the other 7 on the ballot now are bad choices. We have about 2 dozen deserving candidates to squeeze into the next 11 rounds.

God, I hope he doesn’t develop into another Cole Hamels…or Kyle Drabek for that matter.

He’s not the first 19 year old with a lot of money to get himself into a minor scrap. I’m not worried about it.

  11. Went Flande for one reason I actually saw him pitch in Trenton last season and for 4 maybe 5 innings all he did was miss bats. He had 3 maybe 4 walks before he got into trouble in his last inning of work and that was do to a walk and an error. From what I could tell he has a decent fastball and good change but needs another pitch (curve, slider). There is not much to his frame he is small.

Having said that if he improves his command and fills out just a bit I could see him as a Randy Wolf type 4th 5th starter.

  12. Thanks for the Flande report – I hope my suspicions about him are wrong. I will say that he is supposed to be an incredibly hard worker, strong athlete and great guy – the type of player they are trying to develop and promote.

  13. I voted for Savery, but am pretty close to the “I’ll leave it to everyone else” part of the list. I do think, however, that Mayberry and Schwim should be added at this point.

  14. Castro. Age appropriate. Upside. Performance. None of the others on the list have all that in a clean way. They have all had flies in the ointment.

  15. My next five are Flande, Sanchez, Castro, Collier and Villan. I’m surprised Sanchez hasn’t appeared much. He clearly has real potential.

  16. Still writing in Schwimer, just to get him on the ballot. The guy could make the top 30 list on his blogging ability alone – but he had a heckuva year last year. The fact that he really seems to be a student of the game helps too.

  17. I took Carpenter. Almost picked Castro, but then thought how silly loaded the farm is with OF. Carpenter certainly has a lower ceiling, but he’ll be in the bigs at some point this season. If Castro were even my clear favorite for sixth best OF prospect, I’d have taken him. As it is, I sort of flip a coin amongst him, Collier, Dugan, Hudson, with Hewitt not that far behind.

  18. I guess weighting potential/closeness to majors, Mayberry has to be included in that race for 6th best OF prospect.

  19. P.S. – Nice write-up on Mathieson in the Inquirer today. Nothing we don’t know, it’s just nice to see him back on the first page of the sports section after 4 years of wandering in the wilderness (biblical reference).

  20. I did not vote for either player, but how in the world does Savery get votes over Carpenter? They are the same age at the same level and Carpenter has consistantly outperformed Savery at each level.

  21. Forgot Rodriguez. He and Sanches need to come within the next 5 or 6 picks. Pettibone and Shreve too.

  22. If savery were not a first found pick, he wouldn’t crack the top thirty.

he’s a lot like carpender, but with worse control. and he can’t strike people out as well. And he has done absolutly nothing to make anybody think that he can suceed in the bigs.
oh, he’s left handed. that is literally his best single baseball quality

  23. Just a note on Hewitt, who was mentioned above. He made marginal improvement last year, but still mostly sucked. However, a few nice power streaks showed at least a little promise. He can’t slide back or stay the same this year. Something will have to click with him. Sure, he has time, but he is getting to the point where you would expect to see something click and some longer streaks.

I am looking for 15-18 HR, .250 BA, .320+ OPS, etc., with appreciable improvement in pitch recognition and patience. That would be something to build on in A+.

  24. I just broke a tie in favor of Pettibone.
I think he’ll start at Lakewood but end up with Clearwater before the season is over. Again, just a hunch.

  25. I would be shocked if hewitt was in clearwater. I would be ok w/ those numbers in lakewood, but maybe .270 BA.

  26. Reading comprehension? I said CLW in 2011. This year’s Lakewood performance will give him something to build on in 2011 in CLW, where you would hope he has a real breakout in skills. I will be ecstatic with .250. That’s a huge leap from sub-Mendoza and barely over.
