07/30/09–Martinez vs. Carrasco in quite the pitching matchup. Columbus jumped on Pedro’s second pitch of the game, a homer by Michael Brantley to give them the early lead. Michael Taylor gave the ‘Pigs the lead back in the 4th on a long homer to straight away center, his 3rd as an Iron Pig. The lead didn’t last long as a four run fifth put Columbus up for good. Martinez departed having gone 5 innings, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 4, throwing 84 pitches, 53 for strikes. Single runs by Lehigh Valley in the 5th and 6th cut the lead to 5-4, but the bullpen had a difficult night, giving up 4 runs over the 8th and 9th, which led to the 9-6 Columbus win. Terry Tiffee was 3-4 with a run and an RBI, while Michael Taylor, Andy Tracy, and JJ Furmaniak all had two hits for Lehigh Valley. Carrasco left having gone 5.1 innings, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits. He walked one and struck out 6. The Marson/Donald combination had a rough night for the ‘Clippers with Marson going 0-4 and DOnald going 0-3 with 3 strikeouts.
07/31/09–After a long overnight bus trip, the ‘Pigs opened a series in Rochester with a 7-1 win against the RedWings behind Brian Mazone (1-3). Mazone went six innings, giving up just a run, while Jake Woods finished up with three scoreless innings, earning his first save of the year. A two run homer in the first by Andy Tracy (18) got Lehigh Valley going and they didnt look back, scoring three more in the third inning on RBI singles by Tracy and Mike Cervenak. Lehigh Valley added single runs in the fourth and fifth for the final margin of victory. Cervenak, Tracy, David Newhan and Terry Tiffee all had two hits for Lehigh Valley.
08/01/09–Gustavo Chacin got the start Sunday for Lehigh Valley and pitched well going 7 strong innings giving up just 2 runs on 8 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 2 and left with a 3-2, lead, which was quickly blown by the ‘pen in the 4-3 loss. Rochester scored first with a single run in the 3rd, but Lehigh Valley bounced back with a three run sixth inning keyed by a two run homer by Terry Tiffee(4) and an RBI single by JJ Furmaniak. Rochester scored a run in the bottom half of the sixth cutting the lead to 3-2, and then tied the game in the 8th off of Gary Majewski and shortly later scored another in the ninth after 3 straight singles off of Jack Taschner for a brutal 9th inning walk off loss, 4-3. David Newhan has 2 hits for Lehigh Valley, while backup catcher Kevin Nelson made his AAA debut with 2 hits as well.
Notes: Jason Ellison was thrown out of the game on Friday night for arguing balls/strikes after he was called out on a brutal called strike three call.
