2009 Draft

Here’s your outlet for discussing the final 20 picks of the 2009 draft. The Phillies will pick 27th again in every round or until they decide enough is enough. I expect them to take a bunch of high school kids and some college seniors again just to round out the numbers. They took Cosart in the 38th round last year and signed him, so anything is possible. Look for high school guys from Texas and Washington in particular, and maybe even some of the midwestern states this year, as the Phillies seemed to hit Nebraska/Kansas more so than usual. Since the only real objective in rounds 31-50 is taking signability guys and hoping for a miracle, I’d prefer up the middle guys, legit SS/2B and then also prep lefties and maybe a 3B or 1B thrown in there. The following players ranked in Baseball America’s Top 200 have yet to be picked and should be considered big signability guys

  14. I don’t know what you guys want honestly. While I agree we need to take some guys with “risk and projection” We can’t take all “signability” guys. We already took four players yesterday that we would have to bust slot significantly to sign. The mlb draft is too long to make every pick an absolute slam dunk and you have to take some college kids too.

    I’m fine with not liking our first two picks, but I don’t see how some of you expect them to take all high school kids and then sign them all.

  15. jak i really dont… i completely understand the need to take signable college guys both from a financial perspective and and in order to fill rosters. However, while that is a the case, you would think they might take more than a few high school risks in the last 30 rounds. There is a compromise. They found it last year. Is it wrong I want them to find it?

  16. Jak- the problem is that we lacked the top picks this year to get good/premium talent. The way to make up for that is to pick up the signability guys. As it is, we’re probably in the bottom third of the league for drafted talent this year. If you do that for to many years, you end up being the Pirates.

  20. finally with the last 2 picks they have taken some young talent as well. LOL at taking Rubens nephew out of Penn Charter. Good for him, hope he doesnt fleece his uncle in the negotiation

  24. From a past Phillies Infield, you get Bobby Wine’s Grandson, Ruben Amaro Sr.’s Grandson. Maybe Tony Taylor has a Grandson. If people want to include 1B, not sure who 1B was back then. John Hernnstein? Maybe they don’t go that far.

  26. jake440 we as fans don’t want a draft filled with org. filler. we have a ton of them now at double and triple a. are they retiring and we need to fill up again with guys who can’ play ala tyler mach. overbeck. types. I rather pass then take the kids they are taking. No one who follows the draft can be happy with this draft. Unless they are phillies front office people or don’t follow this blog. no third or shortstops where the hell is the middle infielders, you can’t tell me there isn’t a couple of H.S. kids who we can take and put in the systems, so in five years we have something, no more vuh overbeck mach ,types. junk pure junk they are taking.

  29. I keep hearing that they took more risks last year…..the Phils drafted two guys who have million dollar demands in the 14th and 16th rds, respectively.

    Last year their biggest sign after rd 10 was Cosart for 500K

  33. Last pick of 40th round Angels took Muhammad Ali’s Grandson, Looks a bit heavier 5’10 224. A Catcher. There’s a guy they might have looked into.

  53. You are basing your anger on the fact that we’ve taken some Canadians. It’s a tad absurd. Especially given what Matt Stairs has done for the team.

    You’re certainly entitled to your position, but if you could nail every single draft pick, then you’d be working in a front office somewhere. I’m not defending the front office, because really, it doesn’t matter who we pick. What matters is who we sign. That remains to be seen. Unfortunately, the Phillies are not a team that are going to take 15 rounds worth of “signability” high school guys and throw big money at them all. We can’t do that and it’s not a sustainable strategy anyway.

    If we sign the slot-busting guys from day 2, we have the potential to have a very solid class. I can’t believe that someone who is obviously as informed about baseball as you are would go into an mlb draft looking for your team to make a splash with every single one of its picks. That’s just not a reasonable expectation. I think some of you criticize the rest of us for being front office apologists when really, we just don’t freak out and make snap judgements. I think some of you just look for things to complain about no matter what.

  58. 48- THey go local with Wonder Nunez, from Frankfort High School in Philadelphia.

    2 picks before that Yankees picked Pat White, of WVU, and started to say they wanted him listed as a Quarterback, but changed it to OF.

  61. If I’m Shane Victorino, I’m thinking the Phils don’t want me around in a few years…lots of high picks on CF.

    Couple of mid-round SS. Freddie Galvis better develop that bat, cause this system has nothing there (well, OK, Donald, but he won’t be here long).

    First 3rd baseman taken by us was…. Amaro…again, who are we going to find to play 3rd in the minors? Going to have to bring in some scrubs…the idea behind drafting ‘Org Filler’ is to fill the holes in your system so you can field a team. We didn’t do that…nor did we take a lot of flier picks.

    Kind of reminds me of 2005 draft. Best guy still in our system from that draft…..Jeremy Sladen.

  62. And with the final 50TH Round selection, the Phillies go local again with Emory University OF David Hissey. I think they mistakenly pronounced his last name as if it started with a P.

    Kind of an ordeal to follow , luckily I only started paying attention in the 38th Round.

  65. They need to sign Colvin. Badly. Susac and the CO kid (forgot his name) would be nice but they look like very tough signs…..Colvin is the most interesting arm they picked up by far IMO

  66. the guy i wanted, the local 3B Walker with the best power in the draft went in the 49th to the Dodgers. Looks like he’ll be heading to South Carolina.

  67. On the 3B thing, for the GCL team, I listed the possibilities as: Anthony Hewitt (has he been forgotten already? How quick they forget. Also I still got Jacob Sladek as in EST, and the Latin prospect Luis Paulino. PLus they can sign Ruben’ son. Now I have nothing listed at Williamsport so maybe Hewitt and another guy go there. And they got what they got in the full season leagues.

  69. Weird, only like three high dollar HS signability guys? With the lack of money spent at the top they must feel confident about some guys in Latin America. The money must be spent somewhere, right? If not it’s a poor way to run a team. A certain amount must be spent on bringing in quality, young guys every year to keep the team sustainable.

  72. This draft reminiscent of 2005 ( Michael Costanzo/ Matt Maloney/ Michael Durant /David Huff Unsigned / 1st Worley unsigned) . Extremely disappointing at first glance.and certainly unexciting.Maybe in a few years there will be some pleasant surprises, but difficult to envision now.

  74. id say Colvin grades out pre-draft better than anyone we signed last draft(pre-draft)…Colvin getting signed is goin to play a huge part in the final grade of this draft…One can only hope that with how weak day 1 and day three were, that the phils have plans to unload the bux on day 2’ers.

  75. Thought this was interesting, especially the part about the bats.

    In the 48th round, the Phillies selected one-year wonder Wander Nunez from Frankford High. The 18-year-old rightfielder moved from the Dominican Republic and is enrolled in freshman-level classes at Frankford.

    One thing the pros won’t have to worry about is the transition from aluminum to wood bats. Wood is all Nunez uses. He said little kids do use aluminum in his homeland, but that he changed to wood at age 12 and has stuck with it ever since.

  76. There really shouldn’t be much attention paid on specific positions of high school draftees. You will almost NEVER see a second baseman drafted out of high school, reason being is that if he is a good enough athlete to get drafted then he is almost certainly the shortstop. (Or outfielder, 1B, C or P). As these guys progress in development, the college second basemen will slide to third, the shortstops to second or third, the center fielders to the corners, and so on.

    As for the 40th round on, a check of Baseball-Reference gives the results of the 1999 draft. The final 11 rounds (40-50) produced exactly three Major Leaguers. Adam Laroche, Jason Botts and Pat Neshek. If anyone makes it from that portion of the draft, it will be a complete surprise to everyone.

    Also, I don’t know why everyone is sweating the lack of third basemen in the system. We have our stars in place, and a couple future position player stars (we hope) advancing through the minors. It is not difficult to find that useful starter on the free agent market, like a Pedro Feliz or Joe Crede.

  77. Yes, true but with a third basemen from our system and a outfielder then its more money to pay howard. The 5 million we will give Felix could have went to getting Howard sign ed for more years, We need some postion players from our system, if Taylor replaces Werth , Werth only make two million. we need to replace ibanez and felix cheap from our system without losing production.

  78. The point about not many guys coming from rounds 40-50 isn’t all that relevant anymore though, in my opinion. Because teams have begun to spend more in the draft across the board. Elite prep guys have always been drafted in the last 15 rounds, but it seems like only recently, the last 5-6 years, have teams started to heavily invest in the draft by signing these guys.

    What is Werth to make next year. Replacing Ibanez would take big baseballs. But incredible trade value especally to an
    AL team where he could DH the third year but thats not going to happen nor should it.
    Felix would draw a sandwick pick for sure. Right now my eyes are Carpenter. Another great game would be hard to ignore.

  80. Rubens nephew is going to University of Virginia, no way he signs. He’d actually be a decent prospect it seems. 6’3 third baseman, wonder where he ends up in 3 years.

  84. A farm system only needs to produce 1 to 2 players every year to be a success. The Phillies have done that. So by all measures they must be considered productive. Making it to the show is difficult for a first round pick let alone someone drafted in the 30 to 50 range.
