Projected Williamsport rotation

Getting even tougher now…

Correa
Matos
Sampson
De Fratus
(2008 draftee?)

I suppose Diekman could end up here, but since he was a JuCo guy, they should give him a shot at Lakewood. Jiwan James was pretty awful in his debut, I imagine he’ll remain in extended and then go back to the GCL. Matos could start at Lakewood in the bullpen, I suppose they could even get real aggressive with Sampson and skip him to Lakewood too. I think a few guys from the June draft will end up in the rotation. Correa should be close to a lock here, I don’t see them skipping him straight to A ball.

  1. Correa, Sampson, De Fratus is a good starting rotation anywhere. These guys are studs. De Fratus’ K/BB ratio is unreal, Correa and Sampson have a virtually unlimited ceiling with their age and size already. Can’t wait to see what these guys do next season.

Are we going to project where any of the bullpen guys are going to be? I was noticing that some of our GCL guys last year were 4 year college guys. Anyway they get moved through quickly?

  2. Very interested to see what Correa does if they do indeed send him to Williamsport. His age 17 season in the GCL was remarkably similar to Carrasco’s own age 17 season season there. As we all know, Carrasco struggled in his age 18 season between Batavia and Lakewood before breaking out at age 19 at Lakewood. It will be interesting to see if Correa follows a similar trajectory.

  3. Anyone got a feel for how much negative influence there is for a Latin American player, coming to the States, and having to adjust to “hometown America” like Williamsport? The year or two they spend in Clearwater at the GCL has got to help, but the cultural differences have to be unbelievable. We view these kids as just ballplayers, but think of them in comparison to even an American HS kid going off to college in another state. Homesickness, temptations on a social basis, etc. I know the Phillies do some language education, but it can’t be enough. Do these kids tend to “hang together” once they get here? What do they do for transportation, family life, etc? Do they put them with Spanish speaking sponsor families?

  4. I think there is a strong chance that Freddy Ballestas starts here (or in Lakewood) rather than at GCL. Key thing with Ballestas is age (21). He should be ready for this level, though I also understand if they do not want to rush him because of the cultural adjestments.

I have a feeling there will be more than one slot given to 2008 draftees as well. The Phillies could have up to 6 picks in the first 3 rounds (assuming 2 extra picks for Rowand and the Workman comp pick). That might mean 2 relatively high choices among college pitchers, though of course the high picks might not get signed in time to make a great deal of starts.
