Let’s give Reading a go
Carlos Carrasco
Josh Outman
Drew Carpenter
Alex Concepcion
(?)
The first three are pretty much locks, I think Concepcion has a decent shot to start there, but he could be back at Clearwater, which would leave two open spots. Fabio Castro, if he remains a starter, he could be an option here I think.
I think Cruse will get a shot here.

That’s a heckuva top three in that rotation. There’s a chance that Savery will join that rotation as well. My guess is that Joe S will start in Clearwater. Hopefully he forces the Phils to move him up.
I’m kinda curious to see what Reading’s rotation will be towards the end of the year. Who will have moved up to Allentown or possibly Philadelphia?

If Castro does indeed remain a starter, what is the advantage to sending him to Reading instead of Allentown? I could see it last year, when he could be closer to Dubee and the big league club, but that argument doesn’t apply this here.
His numbers from Reading last year, albeit in relief, are dominant (16.2 ER, 12 H, 24:6 K:BB, 2.70 ERA), so let’s challenge him in AAA if we do decide he’s a starter.
Jeff, to speculate on what you said: best case scenario is if Carrasco and Outman both made huge strides and earn midseason promotions to Allentown, and Savery finishes the second half of the season in Reading after dominating in Clearwater. Let’s just hope it happens.

My prediction is that Savery starts in Clearwater, gets promoted quickly to Reading, does well there and either gets promoted to AAA or, if absolutely necessary, gets a September call-up. I think he’ll come on very quickly.

I don’t think Savery makes it above AA this year. His command is still awful from the injury and his “stuff” is mediocre at best right now. I don’t see any reason why the Phillies would rush him in ’08 or ’09 as they have much more established arms in the organization, even if those arms do not have as high of a ceiling.

As much as i’m not that excited about him, You gotta figure Pat Overholt starts at reading as a SP picking up where he left off last year, unless they finally decide to move him to relief (which has gotta be his destination)

I agree that Savery is struggling mightily with his command, but, even with pretty bad control, he was almost unhittable in the AFL. With some rest this winter and his new full-time commitment to pitching, Savery has the potential to really take off. But if he just makes it to AA, there would be no harm in that either.
On another, front, it would be nice to see Castro take another step forward. He has good stuff and I agree that there does not seem to be much point starting him in AA – he’s already shown that he can play there. He’s ready to start in AAA or get a try-out as a late inning guy at that level. I’ve been pretty disappointed in him thus far as I thought he had the ability to dominate, but he’s still pretty young, so there’s time yet.

id say castro starts in allentown, and id go with overholt in the 5th spot here.

It would be a minor miracle if Savery makes it to the Phillies this season, but I do see him contributing this Fall to the Reading Phillies championship run.
I agree that Castro should start in AAA. Meanwhile, the Phillies options for lefties in the bullpen are shaky after Romero. Castro might be needed in middle relief. In fact, if he out-pitches Zagurski and the other lefties in Spring Training, he could start the season on the 25 man roster.

I think Reading fills the rotation with Matt Maloney

I suspect Andrew Cruse will get a crack in ST at a starting nod in Reading to go with Carpenter from the Clearwater team. They were the only two Thresher pitchers to get two starts in the FSL playoffs. Cruse struck out 14 in 13 innings to lead all playoff pitchers in K’s and then pitched in the HWL. Bastardo, Stott and Nathan Johnson each got one start in the playoffs for the Treshers. Concepcion was used once in long relief and pitched very effectively for them in the post season.

Is Dan Brauer recovered from injury and would he be a possibility for a spot in Reading’s rotation? He’s experienced and was doing well in Clearwater before his season ended..

That’s an excellent question, smokey, and I’m interested to see what the Phillies do with Brauer. If he’s healthy, he’s probably good enough to pitch in AA. But, without knowing the extent of his injury or his prognosis, I’d venture to say that he’ll probably take some extended spring training and move on to Clearwater if he’s healthy. He can always move up later in the season, but with the injuries he’s had and the fact that he hasn’t dazzled at any level about short season ball yet, I think Reading is a bit too far to jump him to start next campaign.

From what we know now, Savery would get killed in AA. His K rate in the AFL was bad, and his K/BB rate even worse. I would venture with some confidence that his ERA was a small-sample-size anomoly. Considering his decent, but not overwhelming numbers at Williamsport, I think Lakewood is plenty challenge for now. Considering his age, maybe clearwater.

Wasn;t Curse projected as a back end releiver?
Anyway, I think Overholt would be the 4th with Cruse int he 5th spot.
I’d like to see Castro starting at Allentown with Happ. I think Mathison makes the rotation.
That is a nice rotation for Reading.
Allentown’s looks pathetic (although the minor league free agent has good AAA numbers, should keep them in games but I guess wouldn’t be a candidate to move up.
Does anyone have any good info on the minor league free agents they signed?

Id go with Carrasco, Outman, Carpenter, Cruise and Overholt in AA and Happ, Mathison, Castro, Sergovia and ??? in AAA, with Bisenius and Zagurski in the back of the AAA bullpen

Don’t forget the 1-2 Mercs we will probably sign as fillers

I look forward to a day when our AAA roster will not be made up of fillers. I’d rather have 25-26 yr old might-never-be’s than 29-30 yr old never-were’s

I like the top three for Reading but agree that Castro will be in AAA…..sending him back to Reading will do him no good. Savery, on the other hand, might start at Reading…..good possibility, if not he will definitely be there by mid season. As for him climbing higher, I doubt it unless he is totally dominating at the AA level…..I think having Castro, Happ, Mathieson, and maybe even Kendrick in AAA just gives the Phils some bargaining chips should the need arise (and I’m sure it will!)

I think number 5 starter in AA Reading will be Savage, and Fabio Castro the Model Dictator will be in AAA Allentown.
