J.P. Crawford belted 2 home runs as he went 3 for 4 with a stolen base to lead the Threshers to an 8-7 victory over the Daytona Cubs. Crawford’s 2 home runs sailed over the Oakley sign in right field for those familiar with Bright House Field. The first cleared the back fence and left the stadium. Mets Drub Threshers; August 4, 2014
Nic Hanson made his first start of the season with the Threshers after 3 rehab starts in the GCL where he pitched 5 hitless innings in his last appearance. Hanson pitched well in Lakewood last season before being promoted to Clearwater for 5 so-so August starts. He’s tall at 6’7 and features 3 pitches – a high 80s fastball that ranges from 86-90, a change up, and a slider. Leiter Struggles Against Mets; August 1, 2014
The Threshers 3 game winning streak came to an end when they returned home Friday night. Mark Leiter was coming off 2 solid starts where he had allowed only 2 runs in 16 innings, one his complete game shutout of Charlotte on July 20th. Crabs beat Threshers; July 22, 2014
The Threshers were stymied in their attempt to take the third game of the four game series against the Stone Crabs. Jeb Stuart started and did a KK impersonation, allowing 3 runs on 1 hit in the first inning. The Threshers rallied for 4 runs in the fifth inning to tie the game but Stefan and Ethan Stewart combined to surrender 3 runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Crabs held on for a 7-5 victory.
Stefan has struggled in the first inning this season. Going into his 12th start, his first inning ERA was 14.34. After tonight’s first inning he had pitched 11.2 first innings and allowed 20 earned runs, raising his first inning ERA to 15.42. Guth Guts Crabs; July 21, 2014
A day after Mark Leiter shut out the Charlotte Stone Crabs; Jordan Guth pitched 6 strong innings in his longest outing of the season. Guth and 2 of the 3 pitchers who relieved him pitched the Threshers to a 4-3 victory. Art Charles and Brian Pointer provided the offense.
Jordan Guth had been used primarily as a reliever since his call-up to Clearwater last season. He posted a 3-3 record and 6.28 ERA in 26 appearances in 2013. Guth had made 24 relief appearances before making his first start this year on July 4th at Dunedin. He pitched 4 innings and didn’t figure in the decision. The arrival of Cliff Lee for rehab temporarily squeezed Guth out of the rotation. He pitched a hitless 3 innings against Palm Beach on July 13th. Continue reading Guth Guts Crabs; July 21, 2014
J.P. Crawford and Maikel Franco selected for Futures Game
A pair of Phillies’ prospects are on their way to the 2014 All-Star Futures Game at Target Field in Minnesota.
J.P. Crawford and Maikel Franco have both been selected to participate in the contest, which will take place on Sunday, July 13th as part of the All Star festivities.
Crawford is a no-brainer, as he has hit .286/.388/.391 so far this season. He has struggled in his first 23 at-bats in Clearwater, hitting just .190. That said, it would have been impossible to keep him off the roster. He will suit up for the U.S. team.
Franco’s selection is a bit more of a surprise, considering he has hit just .207/.265/.323 so far. He began the season slowly, then had that nice hot streak for 20 games, where he hit .304 with three homers and 11 RBIs. He has been very quiet for about a month now, and his struggles have been well-documented. He will play for the World roster.
This is Crawford’s first time at the Futures Game, and Franco’s second trip to the game.
Looks Can Be Decieving
Many opinions on the internet about prospects stem from their stats, and especially small sample size stats. We are all guilty of making snap judgements, but often in that moment we miss out on the bigger picture. Stats help create an objective look at what is happening in the game, but without context or proper use, they can be deceiving and lead us into opinions that may not be aligning with the truth. So with all of that being said we are going to play a game of mystery players and look at some trends that may not be showing up in the traditional triple slash lines or the box scores. Given the small sample size nature of these stat lines they are not meant to be predictive of the future, they are meant to show comparisons and past performance.
