Lakewood Weekly Report (7/19-7/25)

Recap:  Lakewood went 3-3 on the week, leaving their record at 18-11 for the second half, still 1.5 games ahead of Hickory in the SAL North.  The week featured an 18-inning marathon the ‘Claws won on Saturday behind excellent starting pitching from Jonathan Pettibone and very strong relief work from a quartet of hurlers.  The outcome left Lakewood at 11-4 in extra innings this year.  In personnel moves, Adam Buschini (finger) and Leandro Castro (oblique) were placed on the DL this week.  Also, some conflicting reports on Jarred Cosart–per the Asbury Park Press, Steve Noworyta stated it’s possible Cosart is done for the year and won’t pitch again until Instructional League, however in a scout.com article, Gorman Heimueller says he’ll start throwing around August 1st and the headline leads one to believe he could be back before season’s end. ‘Pigs Weekend Report

A look at the Lehigh Valley weekend, transactions, probables and notes, with Lehigh Valley on top in 6 of their last 7 games.

Friday–A pretty ugly loss to Norfolk as Lehigh Valley was coming off an 8 game road trip, very long travel day and two rain delays in their 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Tides.  Homers by Josh Bell and Brandon Snyder gave Norfolk a 3-0 lead off of ‘Pigs starter Brian Mazone (5-11) who was less than sharp yielding 3 runs on 10 hits in his 5 innings of work.  A three run homer by Michael Aubrey in the 6th off of Oscar Villarreal put the game out of reach at 6-0. Lehigh Valley managed a few late runs on Domonic Brown’s 5th homer as an IronPig, a two run shot and an RBI double by Andy Tracy. Brown, Tracy and Chris Duffy all had two hits for Lehigh Valley. The recent struggles of reliever Mike Zagurski continued as he gave up 2 runs in his 0.2 innings of work. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Report

Reading Report July 15-20th

Reading got off to a horrible re-start immediately after the EL all-star game losing their first three games to Trenton (2 by one run) but rebounded to take three in a row after shutting out Trenton on Sunday.

Matt Rizzotti went 7/20, hitting in all six games, blasting 3 HR and drawing 3 walks.  He’s slugged .900 since the break and has a .370 OBP giving him a 1.270 OPS over the last week.  Honestly, people need to start looking past his age, since as soon as he qualifies by reaching 2.7 PA per Reading game (which should happen next week), he’ll be leading the EL in BA, OBP, and SLG (currently at .355/.425/.645/OPS 1.071, better than Domonic Brown’s stats in Baseballtown).

‘Pigs Weekend Update

Friday–Lehigh Valley lost their second straight game, post All Star break, this time 7-3 to Louisville.  An RBI single by Domonic Brown got the ‘Pigs on the board in the first inning and they then added 2 more in the 4th on a Paul Hoover RBI single and a Brian Bocock Sac Fly, making it 3-0.  Louisville began chipping away and before Lehigh Valley turned around, Louisville scored 7 unanswered for the victory. Drew Carpenter started and was adequate, going 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits.  He walked one and struck out 4.  Oscar Villarreal (1-3) took the loss in relief.  John Mayberry had his 2nd consecutive three hit game, while Paul Hoover added 2 hits of his own. Aroldis CHapman got the win in relief for Lousiville, striking out all four Lehigh Valley hitters he faced. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

July DSL Update

The DSL Phillies have now completed a little more than half of their season and stand at 21-19 after 40 games, in 5th place, 3.5 games behind the Yankees and the Giants.  The Phillies are in a new division this year which appears to be more difficult, with big spending teams such as the Yankees, Mets, and Marlins among their competition.

The 2010 Phillies are not the youngest squad in the league, but they have seen some positive performances from younger players.  The better prospects in the Latin American complex leagues tend to be the younger players age 17-19 that are holding their own performance-wise.  The Phillies hitters average 18.9 years old, slightly older than the league average of 18.2.  The pitchers average 19.2 years old, again slightly older than the league average of 18.8. Reading Report 6/29-7/14

Back after two weeks, the first complete period without Domonic Brown, who was the main reason for watching this team.

Without its star, Reading split the last two games in June, lost the first two in July, then went on a 7-game winning streak.  Arch nemesis Harrisburg terminated the streak, taking the last three games before the all-star break.

Lakewood Weekly Report (7/5-7/11)

Recap: The BlueClaws went 4-3 on the week.  Colby Shreve and Jon Pettibone were the standouts on the pitching side.  Jiwan James was the most notable on the hitting side as he extended his hitting streak to 19 games, moving within 2 games of the Lakewood record.  After winning the first half championship, the ‘Claws are again on top of the SAL North with a 12-5 record, 2 1/2 games ahead of Hickory.  Baseball America ranked Lakewood as perhaps the single most talented team in the entire minor leagues.  In personnel notes, Trevor May made his first two starts for Lakewood, while Matt Way and Jordan Ellis both moved on to Clearwater.  And tooting my own horn, I won four tickets to a future ‘Claws game via Twitter by coming up with the best Springsteen-related reference they can use on the air (home run call:  “The Big Man has joined the band”.)

‘Pigs Weekend Report

A good weekend for Lehigh Valley as they took 2 out of 3 from Scranton as they go into the All Star Break.  With this being All Star week, no Lehigh Valley report this Thursday, just a brief ‘Pigs update next Sunday, as Lehigh Valley gets back into the action.

Saturday (1)–The ‘Pigs played two on Saturday after their game in Scranton on Friday was rained out.  JA Happ (0-1) got the start and took the loss in the 3-0 Scranton victory in game One.  Scranton put two runs on Happ in the third inning on 3 consecutive hits and a sacrifice fly, and added an insurance run in the 5th on Jesus Montero’s 7th homer of the year. Happ left after 5, having allowed 3 runs on 5 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 7. Lehigh Valley was unable to do much of anything against Scranton starter Tim Redding who allowed just four hits.   Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Report
