Lakewood Weekly Report (6/24-7/4)

Recap: The BlueClaws have hit the ground running in the second half, racing out to an 8-2 record which leaves them atop the SAL North.  Overall, they are 50-30, the best record in the SAL by 4 1/2 games.  In personnel notes, Matt Way goes up, Trevor May comes down, and Nick Hernandez looks to be two to three weeks away from returning (turns out he had a frayed labrum).  I’ve seen two recent reports on Jarred Cosart–the Asbury Park Press reports he’s shut down for two-to-three weeks, then will begin a throwing program, while csnphilly reports he  is getting an MRI on his elbow.

Lakewood Weekly Report (6/14-6/20) Plus First Half Review

Recap: The BlueClaws went 5-2 on the week en route to clinching the SAL North first half title with Sunday’s win.  Jonathan Singleton led the way with two home runs and 5 RBI on Sunday to back a decent start from Brody Colvin.  The week caps a stretch that saw the ‘Claws win 16 of their last 21.  As an aside, last week’s column noted that Sebastian Valle’s two-HR game last week was the first since 2006–turns out I’d gotten that information from a bad source and Derrick Mitchell actually had been the last to do it in 2008.  I can say, with a fairly high certainty, that Singleton’s two-HR game Sunday was the first for the ‘Claws since Valle’s last week.

VSL Early Season Update

We are now about one third done with the 2010 Phillies VSL season and we are starting to get a picture of the strengths and weaknesses of the squad.  The Phillies stand at 12-12 so far, tied for 3rd place in the 7 team league.  They trail the league leading Mariners by 2.5 games.  The Phillies have a relatively young offensive squad and a veteran pitching staff.  The young hitters, led by IF/C Willans Astudillo are holding their own, putting up a team OPS of .684.  The pitching staff is even better, though they are led by several older pitchers. ‘Pigs Weekend Update

The weekend summary for Lehigh Valley along with some notes and a transaction.

Friday–The Lehigh Valley streak of not having won a series all season remains intact after their 8-4 loss to Toledo on Friday evening.  The four game series was split.  Toledo scored two in the first inning off of starter Brian Mazone, however the ‘Pigs bounced back with a run in the 2nd on a Willy Taveras RBI single.  Toledo scored single runs in the 3d and 4th, making it 4-1.  Again, the ‘Pigs stayed in the game with a Dane Sardinha Sac Fly in the 4th and an RBI double by Cody Ransom is the 5th that made the game 4-3.  Mazone left after six, with no decision (6IP 9H 4R 3ER 0BB 5K). An RBi single by Ransom tied the game, but Lehigh Valley relief pitchers had a rough night with Ryan Vogelsong (2-4) taking the loss after giving up a run in the 8th.  Toledo added three in the ninth off of Oscar Villarreal. Big nights offensively for Willy Taveras (2-4,r,rbi, sb), Cody Ransom (3-5, 2b, 2rbi), Dane Sardina (2-3,r,rbi), Brian Bocock (3 hits) and Neil Sellers (2 hits).
