Two games in two days–made it to Reading today (with family, so I missed the start and end of the game). I was interested in watching Harold Garcia and Cody Overbeck as position players (Galvis got the night off) and seeing Drew Naylor throw.

‘Pigs Weekend Update
Yet another lost weekend in Lehigh Valley, as they lost all three games to Gwinnett and have now lost an abysmal 12 out of 13. They are currently at their low water mark of the year, 25 games below .500.
Friday–Another in a long line of one run losses, this time 2-1 to Gwinnett at home on Friday evening. Gwinnett scored early on ‘Pigs starter Nate Bump who left after two innings after being on a pitch count, as he returned to the mound after suffering from Lyme’s disease. In his 2 innings, he gave up a run on five hits. Lehigh Valley tied the score in the 3rd when a Rich Thompson sac fly scored Brian Bocock. Gwinnett regained the lead in the 5th off of reliever Joe Savery (1-10) on consecutive doubles by Freddie Freeman and Joe Thurston. Savery went 4 innings giving up a run on 4 hits. Lehigh Valley was unable to advance a runner past first base after the 3rd inning. Melvin Dorta was the only player to speak of offensively with 2 hits, while on the mound Antonio Bastardo has another scoreless, hitless performance, striking out 2 in his 1.1 innings of work. Iron Pigs game 8/7
I went to the Iron Pigs game tonight, sat in the picnic area down the LF line about even with the left fielder. Great seats to watch the action in the IF, and you could really see the movement in a lot of the breaking pitches thrown.
The IPs lost 11-7 to the Gwinnett Braves, largely because of bad BABIP luck and mistakes that came back to bite them. The Braves had four flare doubles fall in down the lines, and, to their credit, made two difficult catches of flares hit by IPs batters. IPs also hit more than their share of “at ’em balls”.
Lehigh Valley Weekly Report
An ugly 1-5 week for Lehigh Valley, a team that continues to be decimated because of call ups to the Big Club (that being said, they were not very good even before the decimation). The ‘Pigs are now 45-66, in 5th place of the Northern Division of the International League, 20 games behind division leading Scranton.
‘Pigs leaders (include only members on active roster) Hitting: Andy Tracy is 2nd in walks (58), 5th in OBP (.389), and 8th in SLG (.486); Pitching: Nate Bump is 6th in ERA (3.33); Brian Mazone leads the league with 22 starts, is 8th in WHIP (1.17), 8th in HR allowed (16) and is 3rd in IP (130.2); Scott Mathieson is 2nd in saves (20) . Scouting the Reading Phillies
Hey everyone, I had the opportunity to see Reading last night. I am not a pro scout by any means. I actually just graduated high school and I am going to college this fall. I hope to do this one day professionally and I have been following baseball for a long time.
All of the velocities come from Readings radar gun which is typically 3 MPH slow.
These of course are just my opinion.
Drew Naylor- 84-86 FB, touched 88, 68-70 CB, 79-81 CU. Also showed a cutter/slider in the 83 range. Fastball was straight. Had decent command. Curveball looked very good. Multiple times he was tipping the pitch however. It still induced weak contact and swing and misses. Tired in the 4th, leaving many pitches up and losing sharpness. As of now he has a 45 fastball, 60 curveball, fringe 40 change, and a 35 slider. I can see him being effective out of the bullpen. If he can bump his fastball up, he can be effective. There were a few scouts there, none were watching Naylor for what it’s worth.
‘Pigs Weekend Report
Friday–Durham completed their sweep of Lehigh Valley with a 9-2 victory over the ‘Pigs Friday evening at Coca Cola Park. The Bulls built the lead early and were ahead by a score of 5-0 after five innings off of starter Drew Carpenter (7-7). Carpenter lasted six innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits. Just about every time Lehigh Valley put a runner on base, the threat was ended with a double play ball, as Durham turned five on the evening. Both Melvin Dorta and John Mayberry had 2 hits apiece for Lehigh Valley. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Report

Reading Report July 21st-31st
Reading went 6-5 over the last 11 days, including the completion of a suspended game, and another game that was suspended until mid-August. Harold Garcia was the hitting star of the period (along with the usual suspect, Matt Rizzotti), batting .356 and throwing in an unexpected .600 SLG. He hit in 10 of the 11 games, with a double, two triples, and 2 home runs. Garcia has been killing lefties in AA, posting almost a 1.200 OPS, albeit over only 30 plate appearances.
Of course, calling Garcia the ‘star’ shortchanges the monster of the Eastern League, Matt Rizzotti, who posted close to his usual stats, .414/.614/.655 for a 1.269 OPS. His most unusual stat was drawing 15 walks in the 10 games, with Akron simply refusing to pitch to him in the last two games of their series. Rizzotti now leads the EL in batting by 53 points, in SLG by 103 points, and in OBP by 20 points, currently holding the sabermetric triple crown. Continue reading Reading Report July 21st-31st

Crosscutters game report
I noticed this comment needed my approval because of the links attached, but it really deserves its own discussion because of the length and quality of the report. Reader “Jslasher88” was kind enough to type out a long report from his recent trip to see the Crosscutters in action. I hope he’s okay with me bringing his report to the top of the site. Check below.
Update —> Bumped to the top for Jslasher’s 2nd review, which I’ve added to the original post.
