Clearwater Threshers Report (5/2-5/15)

Recap:  Clearwater went 9-4 over the past two weeks and currently sits two games behind Daytona in the FSL North at 24-13.  Lots going on at Brighthouse Field the last two weeks, with big leaguers on rehab assignments, one Top 10er coming off the DL and one going on, and a rare chance for those of us in the Philadelphia area to catch a Threshers game on TV.  Plus some brilliance from Jarred Cosart to end the stretch. Reading Phillies Recap 5/15/2011

Reading at best treaded water over the last two weeks going 7-8. New Britain, New Hampshire, and Reading appear to be the class of the Eastern League this year, and all are in the same division, meaning it will be a tough fight for Reading all the way through August. The R-Phils averaged 5.4 runs/game over the period while yielding exactly 5.4 as well, leading to the .500 stretch. Details below the fold.

2011 VSL Phillies Season Starts Monday

Monday is the start of the 2011 Venezuelan Summer League season.  The Phillies play a 72-game schedule through early August with games usually played in the morning Monday through Saturday each week with Sunday being an off day.  Last year the Phillies finished in 5th place with a 32-36 record.

It looks like the VSL is down to six teams in 2011 as the Cardinals are no longer listed with a team.  More major league clubs are going to multiple Dominican Summer League squads as political and social unrest in Venezuela presents challenges.  The Phillies have invested in a state-of-the-art complex in the country, however, and appear willing to keep their team as long as they can.

Lehigh Valley Weekly Report 11 May 2011

Lehigh Valley continues playing a much better brand of baseball, having gone 4-2 over the past week and are now 18-14 and tied for 2nd place of the Northern Division of the International League, 0.5 games behind division leading Scranton. A Look at Lakewood, volume 2.0

Its been close to two weeks, so lets take a look at Lakewood’s progress since my last write-up. I wanted to write more before the fold, just so there was some text and it didn’t look like just a link. And I was struggling to think of what to write. But then it came to me. When looking at statistics, the common question is “when do we know if this means something” in terms of sample size and relevance. Eric Seidman, who writes at lots of places including Fangraphs and his new Phillies site, Brotherly Glove, had an excellent piece on Frangraphs two years ago which covers this very topic. His piece is actually a simplification (much needed) of a longer, more stats heavy article. Read it here. As you can see from his list, we’re still not in the stabilization range for the statistics that I think are important when looking at prospects. That said, we’re getting close in some cases, and its fun to look at where we stand. So lets get to it.

Clearwater Threshers Report (4/25-5/1)

Recap:  The Threshers had a successful week, going 5-2.  Through the first month of the season, they are 15-9, two games behind Daytona in the FSL North.  They started the week by splitting a double-header with Tampa, winning the opener behind Trevor May’s best start of the year.  They then won two of three from Lakeland, with the sole loss being Jon Pettibone’s first of the year.  They’ll head into the new week looking to close out a series sweep of Tampa, having won on Saturday and Sunday.  Just a stat dump this week as time became scarce this weekend. Reading Phils Update 5/1/11

Coming off of the 6-3 start I reported on two weeks ago, many wondered if the R-Phils were just hot, or if they are really a good team.  That question seems to have been answered, at least in part, by the 9-4 record they posted over the two succeeding weeks.  The team has been led by their offense, efficient if not dominant pitching, and by getting the big hit or the big out when its needed. At 15-7, they’re in first place by 3 games in the Eastern Division of the EL.
