First Person Scouting Report: Williamsport 3 August 2011

Another report from NYPhilsmaniac, who has done an outstanding job of providing us first hand accounts this summer. This report comes from yesterday’s Williamsport game. Thanks again Dave.

PITCHING:
ADAM MORGAN started. I came away impressed even though his line didn’t look good. He is a hard-throwing lefty (or so it appeared to me since there was no radar gun in Brooklyn) who mixes his pitches well. I would make a guess that he was hitting 91-92 but would love to know what he tops out at (jslasher can you help me out here?). Morgan cruised through the 1st inning with 2 lazy flies to CF and a K. In the second inning after retiring the first batter on a liner to right, he gave up an infield single and then a smashed triple. He struck out the next batter on a 3-2 curve but then gave a single that hit the LF wall on the fly. From there he settled down and threw a hitless 3rd and 4th (there was a BB in the 3rd). In the 5th, he seemed to tire and after getting the first two out, he gave up a 2B (that was hit the other way over the 1B head into the corner), another IF single and a walk on a 3-2 pitch. That was the end of his day. They hit probably 3 hard shots off him in almost 5 innings. He definitely was not economical with his pitches running a number of deep counts. So with the bases loaded and two outs, in comes another lefty…

The Crosscutters were almost wiped off the map last night

As discussed in the box score recap post.

This kind of puts things in to perspective. Thankfully everyone is okay, but wow, I can’t even imagine.

First Person Report: Williamsport

A source of mine was able to recently see a Williamsport series, and he passed along some tidbits on a few of our prospects, so I figured I would share it here. Just a note, the radar readings come from a legit radar gun.

* He thought Aaron Altherr was the best player on the field, noting his athleticism and also his plate coverage.
* Kyrell Hudson was also praised for his athleticism, but he often made mental errors, such as throwing to the wrong base, and it appears to be a persistent issue.
* Harold Martinez is very aggressive at the plate. (note from me. This is an interesting observation, because he’s drawn his share of walks)
* Asche has great control of the strikezone, and this person had seen him before this season and praised him for his approach at the plate.
* Kelly Dugan can crush a mistake, but wasn’t handling the quality offerings quite as well.
* Austin Wright got a fairly nice mention. The gun had him at 90-91 consistently.
* Kleven was throwing 95 in his first inning, then settled in at 91-93.
* Bryan Morgado was consistently 92-93 and very impressive.
* Jesus Pirela was throwing 92-94 but with very little idea where the ball was going.

There ya go. Positive news for the Altherr fans here, and we can only hope Morgado can finish strong and then hop on the fast track.

2011 DSL Midseason Update

The Phillies DSL team is a work in progress after last year’s team had a number of players promoted to GCL or Williamsport this past winter.  2010 DSL graduates included Witer Jimenez, Carlos Valenzuela (playing surpisingly well), Jorge Castillo, Gabriel Arias, Hector Neris, Luis Gonzalez, Carlos Best, and Ramon Oviedo.  That is 8 promotions from the DSL team alone and prompted some criticism about the Phillies having an older DSL squad without a huge number of prospects last year. Game Report – Clearwater 6 July 2011

Commenter “sillybones” posted an in depth review of the Clearwater game from July 6th he attended, and I think it warrants its own post. For future reference, if you attend a game and would like to contribute a writeup, I would love to add it as its own post, and I’m actually going to create a section of the site here for reader submissions and things of that sort. Note, I’m only interested in reports that contain observations on prospects/players, not how much fun you had, if the hot dogs were good, etc etc. If you have a game report you want to share, send them to me via email…phuturephillies at gmail dot com. In the meantime, check below for a report from Clearwater, featuring Jarred Cosart.

Clearwater Threshers Report (6/13-6/26)

Recap:  The past two week period overlapped the FSL All-Star break.  During the stretch, the Threshers went 2-8, ultimately ending the first half at 39-30, 7 ½ games behind Daytona in the FSL North.  They are 1-3 in the early portion of the second half.  A few roster moves over the past fourteen days, most notably Leandro Castro and Tyson Gillies landing on the DL (Castro had been running with a noticeable limp just prior to being DL’ed, Gillies has a foot problem) and the addition of Marek Minarik and Matt Way to the official roster (even though both are DL’ed).
