Clearwater (12-8, 48-38) dropped a double header to Tampa, 4-1 and 2-0. Flaws in their offense were exposed as they collected just 2 hits in each game.

The Phillies limp into the All Star break in third place 6.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves. They started the week with a victory in Atlanta, but then got blown out of the next 2 games. They rallied somewhat winning 2 out of 3 in New York.
The Phillies will complete a 26-game stretch against division opponents the first series after the break. So far, they are 9-13 with a rain out in the first 23 games of the stretch. Not the kind of division record that wins divisions. Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of July 8th
Both Dominican teams won this morning. Red is in first place, and White is a game behind in their respective divisions.
In the GCL, the West team leads the division, East is 3.5 games back.
Clearwater is 1.5 games behind the first half winner. They have the best overall record of the other teams in the division, the tie-breaker if the same team wins both halves.
Reading has a 3.0 game lead and the best overall record in their division.
Lehigh Valley has fought their way back to .500 and are 6.5 games back in fourth place.
Lakewood is well out of it, 7.0 games back in sixth place (of seven).

There were a couple of live batting practices this morning. Robinson Martinez threw in the second one against a group that included four of the this year’s draft picks – Bryson Stott, Jamari Baylor, Marcus Lee Sang, and Jadiel Sanchez. I watched our three newest players take batting practice today on Roberts Field. I have some video. but I’ll have to figure out how to get it from e-mail to WordPress and from my android to WordPress. Bryson Stott has easy power from an easy swing. He’s built bigger than I anticipated for a shortstop, big across the shoulders. Marcus Lee Sang has an athletic build and generates power with a swing that gets quickly through the strike zone. When I arrived at the Complex, Erik Miller was throwing a live batting practice on Ashburn Field. I only saw about a dozen pitches. It looked like he was throwing 3/4 arm slot, but a few appeared to be over the top. He looked good, can’t wait to see more.
Stott, Lee Sang, and Sanchez were on Schmidt Field, shagging during batting practice. Just as their group was called to hit, some rain began to fall, what we called a sun shower up north. Colton Eastman pitched six innings and allowed 2 runs on 7 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 3 on 82 pitches, 55 strikes (67.1%). Austin Ross gave up a run in one inning of relief. The 39-38 Phillies went 5-2 last week. They swept the Mets but then lost 2 of 3 to the Marlins. And, they had to come back from behind in all 4 Mets game. Yeah, it’s great that they were able to rally back, but why are they falling behind like that to the Mets? At home? And then blowing a 6-1 lead in Miami. Not great outcomes as I see it.
