Crazy Day In Allentown

Although not necessarily prospect relevant, the goings on today in Allentown probably deserve a post of its own. It goes as follows:

3B Ronnie Belliard announced his retirement pre-game. He had been the primary starting third baseman through the first part of the season but had seen his playing time decrease with the addition of Pete Orr.

Speaking of Pete Orr, he had been penciled in as the starting 3B this evening, but was pulled from the lineup when his wife went into labor.  Replacing him was Jeff Larish, who was supposed to be used in emergencies only after coming down with the flu circulating around the clubhouse. Around the System–Middle Infield

Not a whole heck of a lot to discuss in the middle infield from a prospect standpoint. Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez are the two who are on the 40 man roster, while Edgar Duran has been worth watching as well.

Lehigh Valley

Josh Barfield, 28, .271/.309/.389 in 203 AB’s; 4 HR 28 RBI; 7/13 SB; 6% bb rate/18% k rate; .245 vs. LH, .280 vs. RH, .213 with RISP; .344 in May. 53 games at 2B with 4 errors (.983); 4.49 R/F. Barfield has come on nicely at the plate with some key hits over the last month. Defensively he is adequate at best. Continue reading Around the System–Middle Infield

Hot or Not 10 June 2011

Some obvious talking points: A horrible week for the Lakewood rotation, Vance Worley is back where he needs to be, nice work by the top of the organization in the ‘pen, and Joe Savery slumping.

Around the System–Corner Infielders

A month has passed since we last looked at the Corner Infield, so here it goes.

Lehigh Valley–Tagg Bozied, 31, .254/.398/.582 in 67 AB’s; 5 HR 15 RBI; 17% bb rate/30% k rate; .375 vs. LHP, .216 vs. RHP; .286 with RISP. 11 games at 1B with 1 error (.990); 8.91 R/F; 4 games in LF without an error.

Mayberry Optioned

It seems that John Mayberry lost the coin toss, as he was optioned to AAA Lehigh Valley with the activation of Shane Victorino from the DL.  The Phillies options appeared to be A) Optioning Mayberry; B) Placing Gload on the DL with his hip issue; C) Optioning Francisco or D) Subjecting Martinez to Waivers and offering him back to Washington.  Mayberry was hitting .231 with 3 HR and 12 RBI to go along with 4 stolen bases.  He had started 12 games in a row, and 16 of the last 17 for the Phils, playing a solid CF in Victorino’s absence. Around the System–Relievers

A look at the relief corps around the system, with plenty to be excited about.  Stats are through Tuesday May 24, 2011.

Lehigh Valley

Mike Zagurski, 28, 12 games, 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA; 7 saves, 12.1 IP 9H 7BB 20K; 1.29 WHIP; .220 opp. avg., .273 vs. RH, .200 vs. LH; .091 with RISP.  Zagurski has thrown very well, although it hasn’t transferred in his limited time called up to Philly.  Needs to hone the control a bit.
