Juan Perez Called Up, Contreras back to the DL

The Phils placed RP Jose Contreras back on the DL with continued arm issues and have called up LHP Juan Perez from AAA Lehigh Valley.  Perez, 32,  is a lefty specialist that has good stuff, but often has little control. In 28 appearances this year, Perez is 0-3 with a 3.52 ERA and five saves. He averages well over a strikeout per inning (12.3/9) and has help the opposition to a batting average right around he Mendoza line. The problem is he walks over 6 hitters per nine. He last appeared in the majors in 2007 for the Pirates (17 games)

Around the System–Catchers

Lehigh Valley

Erik Kratz, 31, .277/.376/.509 in 159 AB’s; 10 HR 28 RBI; 12% bb rate, 18% k rate; .375 vs. LH, .234 vs. RH, .275 with RISP, .266 since May 1. 47 games caught with 2 errors, and 6 passed balls. 30% CS rate. Kratz should have been in the majors backing up Ruiz the last 6 weeks.  Doing everything he can at AAA.

John Suomi, 30, .259/.302/379 in time throughout the system this year (58 AB’s); 1 HR and 5 RBI. Organizational guy.

Time to Notice…..Tyler Cloyd?

In what may become a new feature, there are players throughout the organization, worthy of notice that from time to time sneak under the Phuture Phillies radar screen.  Is Tyler Cloyd one of them?

Cloyd, 24, was a 18th round pick by the Phils in 2008 and a Bellevue, Nebraska native.  CLoyd progressed through Williamsport in 2008, followed by Lakewood and CLearwater in 2009, putting up decent numbers as a starter.  Going into the 2010 season, the Phils made a decision to use Cloyd predominately out of the bullpen, a transition with which he had some difficulty, finishing the year with an ERA over 5.oo, spending most of the year in Clearwater. Lehigh Valley

Rich Thompson, 31, .261/.342/375 in 161 AB’s; 2HR 7 RBI; 21/23 SB; 13% bb rate, 20% k rate, .250 vs. LH, .266 vs. RH, .250 with RISP, .269 since May 1.  48 games in the OF with 1 error (.989). Thompson is still providing good defense, good speed, and a decent bat at the top of the order.

Brandon Moss, 27, .257/.343/.495 in 202 AB’s; 10 HR 40 RBI; 1/3 SB; 11% bb rate, 25% k rate; .231 vs. LH, .267 vs. RH, .328 with RISP, .267 since May 1. 47 games in the OF with 1 error (.987); 7 OF assists.  Has been hitting for good power and a clutch hitter.

Delwyn Young, 28, .236/.280/.384 in 229 AB’s; 7HR and 26 RBI; 6% bb rate, 27% k rate; .232 vs. RH, .238 vs. LH, .183 with RISP, .273 since May 1.  45 games in the OF without an error , 2 OF assists. Not much Young has done has impressed me.  Horrible BB/K rate and horrible with RISP.

John Mayberry, 27, .212/.271/.327 in 52 AB’s since being sent down, 1 HR 6 RBI; 9% bb rate, 19% k rate.  Has had a few key hits but generally has looked lethargic since coming back down.

Scott Podsednik, 35, .255/.286/.404 in 47 AB’s with Lehigh Valley. 0HR 0RBI; 2/2 SB; 29% k rate. Podsednik will miss another three weeks with a foot issue.  He has not shown enough to suggest he is still major league worthy. Continue reading Around the System–OF

Hot or Not 17 June 2011

A few talking points this week are the struggles of JC Ramirez, Drew Carpenters’s accension back onto the radar screen as a middle reliever, Freddy Galvis again making the hot list on offense, Cesar Hernandez getting it going, and Jonathan Singleton struggling.

Call Ups

Quickly adding to what James posted earlier(Defratus call up), it appears both Cody Overbeck and Phillipe Aumont have been called up to Lehigh Valley from Reading and are on their way to Pawtucket for the ‘Pigs four game series.  The three corresponding roster moves for now it seems are the retirement of Ronnie Belliard, the release of Brian Gordon and a call up for Vance Worley.

Update: Add LHP Ryan Edell to the list of call ups from Reading to Lehigh Valley.  Edell threw the ball well in the Reading rotation, going 5-1 with a 3.50 ERA in 12 AA starts.  He will be plugged in to a rotation spot in Lehigh Valley.

Joe Savery goes from Clearwater to Reading, to take the spot of Cody Overbeck.  Savery was hitting .307 with 2 HR and 25 RBI with CLearwater and was the Phils Minor League Player of the Month for April.  Also going to Reading are relief pitcher Justin Friend, called up from Clearwater and RP Chance Chapman, sent down from Lehigh Valley.  Friend was recently named to the FSL All Star team and was 2-3 with a 2.12 ERA and 19 saves for the Threshers.

Update: The Phillies have signed RHP Tim Redding, 33, to a minor league deal.  Redding who has a good deal of major league experience, was pitching for AAA Albuquerque before opting out of his contract.  Redding was 2-7 with a 6.59 ERA in 12 starts this season at AAA. Redding last pitched in the majors in 2009 for the Mets.
