KYLE DRABEK IS KING TONIGHT!

After picking up three wins in his first three starts Kyle Drabek had to wait until his 10th appearance to get another, but it was a gem. He threw a complete game shutout of the Stone Crabs scattering just five hits over nine innings. He struck out seven and walked just one in the game. Abbreviated Threshers Report

Well. The Clearwater Threshers were not able to play a lot of ball this past week with three rain outs, a day off, and in the only three games they did play they were swept by the last place Tampa Yankees to put them 7.5 games back, but still in second place in the Florida State League Northern Division. Clearwater Report

It was a pretty quiet week in Clearwater this week. The team played only four games with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights all getting rained out. In the four they did play they were 2-2 with back-to-back losses to the Cubs (7-4 & 7-2) followed by a win against the Cubs to save a series sweep winning 6-3. On Sunday in their first game of a three game set with the Flying Tigers the team won 9-8 with a ninth inning rally after blowing an early 5-0 lead. Then as mentioned the next three games were washed out with the two against the Flying Tigers being canceled and not to be made up. Continue reading Clearwater Report

Clearwater Threshers Review

It’s been a couple of weeks since we took a look at the Clearwater Threshers, and for that I appologize. I was out of town on business, almost immediately followed by being out of town another week for a funeral, so I haven’t had a lot of time to dedicate to baseball lately. This week’s report won’t be a comprehensive as I normally like to be, but I did want to get something up, so here we go.

The Clearwater team continues to hold onto second place in the Florida State League, after leading their division for most of the month of April. The team is now going into an off day on Wednesday after a six game road trip, including a sweep of the first place Brevard County Manatees (Brewers) to pick up some much needed ground as they look to regain first place.

Clearwater Threshers Week 2 Report: (4/15-4/22)

Week one for the Threshers was all about the offense as they lead the league after four games with 26 runs, but week two for the team was all about the pitching. The team was 4-3 on the week, and still remains on top of the Florida Sate League Northern Division with a record of 7-4. Each of the four wins this week included a pitching gem from their starters. Kyle Drabek had two wins going 13.2 innings with 19 strikeouts to go with the 8 from his first outing to now lead the FSL with 27 Ks overall. Carlos Monasterios threw a complete game shut out in his first start of the season in a seven inning affair as part of a double header, while Yohan Flande threw 7.0 innings on Sunday to improve his record to 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA on the year.

Carlos Monasterios Gets Complete Game Shut Out in Clearwater

Game 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 R H E
Flying Tigers 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0
Threshers 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 7 0

In tonight’s first game of the double header Carlos Monasterios picked up a win for the Threshers going the distance. He held the Flying Tigers to just three hits in seven innings while striking out four and walking just one in his first start of the young season. The Thresher offense was held quiet as the team picked up only one run in the game, but thanks to Carlos’ efforts that proved to be enough. Clearwater Week One Report: (4/9-4/14)

Things in Clearwater have looked pretty sunny through the first four games of the season, despite the fact that Tuesday night’s game was rained out. The team is loaded with talent this season, including seven of the Phuture Phillies Top 30 Prospects plus three players listed as near misses. The team’s new manager Ernie Whitt is a night and day difference from the 2008 manger Razor Shines (with Shine playing the part of night), and the team’s 3-1 record is the best of any Phillies minor league team so far in this young season.

Threshers Defeat the Bluejays 5-2

Threshers 3 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 5 10 0

The Clearwater Threshers looked sharp in their 2009 season opener against the Dunedin Bluejays. Kyle Drabek got the opening night nod to take the hill, and looked good except for one rough inning in the fourth. Through the first three innings he had held the Bluejays hitless with his only blemish as a hit batsman in the first.

2009 Minor League Workout Groups: 3/24 Update

UPDATED:  3/24/09

Here is a look at the current workout groups for the Phillies minor league teams.  Keep in mind that there will be MANY changes before the season actually gets underway.  Players are still going to get sent down from the Phillies ST roster to the minors.  That will create a ripple effect of players on this list moving down.  Also (and unfortunately) many of these players will be cut before the season starts and may not end up on any roster despite where they are listed now.  There was a small first round of cuts this week with 11 guys getting their walking papers.

This is updated weekly (on Tuesdays this year), so I will try to get the new groups up ASAP again next week. .
