2023 Spring Training (2/22)

Spring Training for the full squad begins Tuesday morning.  Pitchers and catchers reported last week.  Position players round out the full squad today.

The roster includes the players on the 40-man roster and 24 invited non-roster players.  That makes 63 since Bryce Harper is still rehabbing and won’t be in Clearwater until next month.

Update: On February 16th, the Phillies extended invitations to catchers Jack Conley and Cody Roberts as well as recently signed free agent Aramis Garcia.  This should help them through the period when Realmuto, Stubbs, and Friscia are playing for teams in the WBC.  These additions were added above.

I’ve been able to attend a couple of mini-camp sessions.  I’ve avoided the Phillies’ pitchers and catchers and the larger crowds.  I’ve been granted permission to watch the mini-camp pitchers on the seven mounds.  Took advantage of the opportunity to watch Mavis Graves throw a bullpen.  His appearance and mannerisms remind me of a left-handed Ben Brown.

The Phillies activated a lot of their rehabbers.  However, they still have 18 players rehabbing.

Pitchers (13):  Elicier Bata, Blake Brown, Drew Garrett, Daniel Harper, Damon Jones, Christian McGowan, Jhordany Mezquita, Micah Ottenbreit, Dominic Pipkin, Jason Ruffcorn, Tom Sutera, Jace Vines, JP Woodward.

Catchers (2): Kliubert Avila, Arturo De Freitas.

Infielders (2): Alexeis Azuaje, Nikau Pouaka-Grego.

Outfielders (1): Jordan Viars.

Still not ready to come back full-time.  I’m targeting the opening of minor league spring training on March 3rd.  This is one of several articles I wrote a while ago when I first received the information.  I put it on a timed release when I went on hiatus.  I’m not accepting comments.  I’m not ready to deal with that yet.
