2023 MiLB Spring Training (3/7)

The first full workout for Minor League Spring Training begins this morning. Most of the participants have been in Clearwater for many weeks.  The balance reported yesterday.

The Phillies Minor League Spring Training Roster includes 160 rostered and rehab players.  Six of the 160 players will be playing for their respective WBC teams.  At some point this spring, the roster will be augmented with minor league players returning from the major league camp.

The 2023 Minor League Spring Training RosterThese players will be divided into groups that resemble the four affiliates. However, most of the Triple-A players will still be in the major league camp as well as the Triple-A coaching staff.

I’ll post the groups if/when I get them.

Reminder: The stateside affiliates are limited to 180 players during the regular season and 190 players up until opening day.  Unlike the major leagues which can place players on the 60-day Injury List once spring training starts, the minor leagues cannot place players on the 60-day and/or Full Season Injury Lists until their regular seasons start.

Regarding Bryce Harper, he has not yet been placed on the 60-day IL.  This is the transaction most likely to occur when Noah Song has to be activated, assuming no other roster move is required before that need.

Some interesting roster notes:  catcher Chris Burke is now an outfielder, catcher Micah Yonamine is now an infielder most likely first base, RHP Jace Vines is not on an affiliated roster, infielder Wilson Valdez is finally listed as a pitcher, SS Leonardo Rondon is now a catcher, outfielders Chad Castillo and Dakota Kotowski are listed as infielders most likely first basemen.  David Parkinson is back.  Parkinson was a no-show last spring and was placed on the RL for the entire season.  Three other players remain on the RL – infielder Chris Cornelius, LHP Parker Scott, and LHP Jake McKenna.

The six players on WBC rosters are – LHP Erubiel Armenta (Mexico), RHPs Jesus Cruz (Mexico), Jaydenn Estanista (Curacao), Noah Skirrow (Canada), Nick Ward (Great Britain), and Rixon Wingrove (Australia).

There may be as many as fifteen of these players still on or new to the IL.

Oh, and regarding roster limits, the 160 players in minor league spring training, the 24 non-roster invitees, the 14 minor league players on the 40-man roster, the 11 players not invited to either camp (they are likely attending ST at the Dominican Academy) brings the player count to 209 players.

The eleven “not invited” players include LHPs Jose Acuna and Maike; Garrido, RHPs Oswald Medina, Daniel Mejia, and Giussepe Velasquez, C Jackie Pertuz, INF Diego Gonzalez, and Jehisbert Sevilla, and OF Ezra Farmer, Lou Helmig, and Albert Rodriguez.  All were on the FCL roster last season.  All are likely to start the season there this season.  All are likely to be stateside for XST.  All are possibly attending ST at the Dominican Academy.
