Phillies’ Affiliates Recap (7/13/2022)

Here are today’s results.

Sorry, I forgot to turn on comments yesterday.  Didn’t realize until I was told around 5:30 PM.  Turned them on, probably too late.  My bad, they’re turned on today.

Julian Garcia was released.  He was drafted in the tenth round of the 2016 Amateur Draft. (287 overall) out of Metropolitan State University of Denver.  He spent his first 2 seasons at Low-A Williamsport and posted K-rates above 12.0/9 IP.  His best season was 2018 at Class-A Lakewood, his age 23 season.  He posted a 2.54 ERA in 28 games, 8 starts and still was striking out batters above a 10.0/9 IP clip.  He tossed a career-high 125.2 innings the next season, the bulk for High-A Clearwater and 28.2 innings at Double-A Reading.  His ERA rose above 6.00 at Reading.  After the 2020 shutdown, he struggled to regain his early form the last two seasons.  In an unusual move for the Phillies, Garcia was released while still on the 7-day IL leading me to believe that the release might have been at his request.  Good luck, Julian.

Lehigh Valley (45-41) lost to the Charlotte Knights, 3-1.  Nick Maton went 4-5 with a double.  Bailey Falter pitched 5.1 innings and gave up one run on 5 hits, 0 walks, and 5 K.  Ryan Sherriff pitched a clean inning.  Connor Brogdon got lit for 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning on 3 hits.  My intel leads me to believe that neither Falter or Brogdon could have traveled to Canada.

Reading (38-45, 9-5) beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-0.  That’s back-to-back shutouts to start the series.  Eric Miller gave up a hit and struck out two in one inning.  Matt Seelinger struck out 3 in two innings.  Braden Zarbnisky strucl out 5 in two innings.  Logan O’Hoppe and Jhailyn Ortiz each had 2 hits.  Wendell Rijo hit a 3-run HR (2) and Jonathan Guzman hit a solo HR (3).

Jersey Shore (27-53, 2-12) game v. the Aberdeen IronBirds was suspended due to light failure in the sixth inning with the BlueClaws leading, 6-3.  Rixon Wingrove had a double, HR (7), and 2 TBI.

Clearwater (40-42, 5-12) lost to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, 6-2.  Erick Brito had 2 hits including a double and an RBI.  Brett Schulze gave up a hit and struck out 2 in a rehab inning.

FCL Phillies (10-16) no game scheduled

DSL Phillies Red (18-9) beat the DSL Tigers2, 11-4.  Jesus Querales (0.71) picked up his 4th save allowing a hit and a walk while striking out 5 in 2.1 innings.  Neify Rosario had 3 hits including 2 doubles, a walk, 3runs scored, and an RBI.  Jose Colmenarez had 3 hits including 2 doubles, an HBP, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.

DSL Phillies White (15-11) no game scheduled

  1. Sorry I have to say it becsuse I met him and he is a great kid, Taylor Lehman was “lights out” last night.
LH Taylor Lehman – threw 2 pitches when lights failed – game suspended at Aberdeen for JS.

  2. Johan Rojas…AA…..12 games played…-9 games with a hit or more…BA .326.
Would be nice to see him carry that bat thru the end of the year.
Phillies will be putting him on their 40 come Nov….if he is not traded before then.

    1. I was a little down on Johan to start the season but then I watched him live and relaxed. Don’t mess with the Johan

Now I’m not saying he is a sure bet as Victor Robles comes to mind. Victor never struggled in the minors but never adapted to the MLB either.

Again I’m not sure why that is. Its a very strange phenomenon

        1. Yeah…..Rojas could see saw Triple A pitching come September
I think the Phillies would like to see that.
Rojas turns 22-years old next month so he is not particularly whet behind the ears.
If Dave D decides not to trade for a MLB CFer in the next three weeks, then maybe he may see Rojas as the guy come next season in Philly in CF.
          Defensively he is ready.

          1. If he’s still with us (I’ll be surprised if he is), I doubt he goes to AAA. I think he’ll struggle at AA at some point and will then work on correcting things. If he’s here, he’ll get a big league camp invite next year and then play at AAA. You can’t rush the raw kids, they really need the development

            1. He however has already had one big league spring invite….maybe 2022 was his second…..i remember him getting ABs in the spring of 2021, but they could have been extra player games.
I am positive he will get the AFL invite this fall in Arizona, so that means they are looking for him to ETA in mid-to-late 2023 sometime.
Then again…just a moot point if he is moved in a trade.

  3. Rixon Wingrove??? Thoughts??? He is a giant human, like 6’5, 250 lbs… And can hit

    1. Wingrove is 22 at Jersey Shore not old by any stretch. I’ve seen him live and he’s got an idea at the plate. He’s someone to watch

He hits the ball hard and sprays it around. I’d like to see what he can do at Reading.

  4. Seems like forever ago when we were clamoring for the Phils to spend big in the LA market. Our foray into that was one Jhailyn Ortiz. A 16 y/o who during a BP session put ball after ball way over the fences down in the DR

Today Jhailyn is 23 in AA OPSing just 762. His K’s are 103 to just 27 BBs and that is on 299 PAs. By comparison Vlad Jr is 23 in his 4th season in the bigs.

I propose a new movie trouble with the spin…

    Spin is the great equalizer

I don’t fault the Phillies for at all I just hope it was a great lesson for our scouts. I don’t envy any scout honestly that has to try and project a 16 y/o or even an 18 y/o for that matter.

  5. I know that the Phillies will have some choices to make this offseason when it comes to 40 man spots, but will the Phillies protect Noah Skirrow or Ethan Lindow? They are both close enough to the bigs that maybe some team might select them and put them in a long man role.

  6. Finally found true story about Toffey, all but one story had him selected and optioned but he was a substitute.

  7. Now I found story that said Kelly was outrighted to LHV instead of optioned, so maybe Toffey was not a substitute.

    1. I think Toffey sticks around on the 40 until the trade deadline. IF depth, that’s all.

  8. Read on CBS Sports that Kelly was optioned to LHV then he was DFA’d and Toffey was selected and took his roster spot on the 40.
