Phillies Affiliates’ Recap (4/10/2022)

Lehigh Valley lost the series finale and settled for a split of their 6-game series.  Reading won Sunday to avoid a sweep.  But, Jersey Shore and Clearwater could not avoid the broom.  Matt Kroon, who left Saturday’s game with an apparent injury in the first inning after a failed steal attempt, was placed on the IL on Sunday by Reading.

Clearwater (0-3) lost to Fort Myers, 6-3.  link

The Threshers fell behind and rallied to make a game of it.  But, 3 unearned runs sealed their fate.  They got solid pitching from Alex Garbrick (4 Ks in 2.0 innings, though 3 BB) and Rodolfo Sanchez (struck out the side in the ninth).  Arturo De Freitas went 3-4 with 2 runs, an RBI, a double, and a HR.  Jamari reached on a walk and HBP and stole two bases.

Lehigh Valley (3-3) lost to Columbus, 12-1. link

Nothing to see here.  Guthrie got a hit and is batting .429.  Darick Hall (.300) is the only other starter over .200.  John Andreoli picked up an outfield assist at third base, his second I believe.

Reading (1-2) beat Somerset, 5-3. link

The Fightin Phis overcame a 3-run deficit with home runs in the seventh, eighth, and walked off in the ninth to record their first win of the season.  Jonathan Guzman stroked a 2-run HR, Jhailyn Ortiz lashed a solo HR, and Wendell topped it all with a 2-run shot.

The bullpen performed admirably receiving a stellar performance from Francisco Morales who retired all six batters he faced while striking out three.

Jersey Shore (0-3) lost to Aberdeen, 8-4. link

McGowan and Mezquita pitched well thru six innings, allowing just one run.  But the bullpen couldn’t sustain the lead.  Aberdeen pushed 4 runs across in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead and cruised to the victory.

Johan Rojas had 2 hits in 5 at bats and stole 2 more bases (5).  The team has 14 in 3 games.

  1. I guess this comment belongs in this thread. So, the Phils previous roster move with Roman Quinn paid off.

    1. Quinn has no future with the Phillies. That should have been apparent once the Phillies kicked him off the 40 man roster. The Phillies signed Quinn because of injuries. In order for Quinn to see ML action, Herrera AND Moniak AND Vierling/Muzziotti have to get hurt.

      1. And Herrera is hitting in Clearwater, so he is only a few weeks away now…so Roman may be at LHV for awhile.

      2. Not so sure about that. The Phillies needed the 40-man spot (and several others) through the winter and free agency. I think their CF is still unsettled. Herrera was cheap but could easily be ineffective as he is a year older. Vierling and Muzziotti and Moniak are really untested and have never had sustained success.

Quinn is last in line to claim playing time here. But he also probably has like a 20% chance to claim part of the CF job by midsummer. Maybe even more than that. And it is still 50-50 that a trade acquisition will get the job in the back end of the season.

        1. Here’s a pick ’em for ya – the odds Roman Quinn gets major league time this summer = ____-1

          versus

The odds Roman Quinn gets hurt before then…___-1

…point being, if we’re collectively holding our breath to find out, we’re in very bad shape in CF. Moniak’s injury is a tough break, but all teams go through it over the 162 game season. Otherwise, what’s the solution?

          1. 30% playing time. 50% getting hurt. My point is that there is really no CF. Might as well get more options. And we all know that a Roman Quinn that does not get hurt could be a decent player. That is fantasy of course, but Vierling could also be closer to his AAA stats last year than his limited major league stats. There are just no givens out there.
