Box Score Recap

New week, so a lot of losses.  Lehigh Valley fell behind early and stayed behind.  Reading walked off with a win.  Jersey Shore wasted a great start.  Clearwater dropped two.  The FCL Phillies won Monday AND Tuesday.  And, the DSL teams both lost.

I’ve got visitors arriving tomorrow.  Daughter and her family that I haven’t seen in two years.  So, no more Complex visits for 7-10 days.  Daily recaps might be sketchy if I even get to them at all.  I apologize in advance.

Let me leave you with this.  One comment asked if I had seen any nuggets in Clearwater that might give hope in a couple years.  Although I’ve seen a lot of Complex action, I’m only allowed on-site during home games.  The latest breakout down here and all the injured players up and down the system have really influenced how much playing time the newest players have received.  And, when they started making appearances with the Threshers, the team was on the road (for two weeks thru this Sunday).

However, one thing I’ve noticed is that the Latin American players are built better than the shorter, skinnier players I’ve become accustomed to seeing.  I had always been jealous of the taller, bulkier players that made up the lineups of the Yankees, Pirates, and Tigers.  But, SS Albert Jerez, OF Felix Reyes, OF Leandro Pineda are all bigger than usual.  The Phillies were forced to promote a lot of players to help the Threshers.  Reyes has stuck, so far.

The pitchers haven’t thrown enough for me to have an opinion.  But, Tristan Garnett is intriguing.  He’s a big lefty NDFA.  I mentioned earlier this week that he’s built like Rick Mahorn (the basketball player).  I can’t get close enough to see his velocity.  But, he throws hard and lives at the bottom of the zone.  He’ll have to clean up his loopy slurve to get outs as he moves up.  But, he may be worth keeping an eye on.

Lehigh Valley (41-47) lost to Rochester, 8-4.  Mark Appel (3-3, 5.61) bombed with one, five-run inning on 3 hits and 2 walks.  Brady Lail (9.24) pitched two innings, walked three, and struck out three.  Sam Coonrod pitched one, rehab inning getting 3 ground balls on 7 pitches.  Bronze medal winner Ramon Rosso (4.18) returned and pitched one inning giving up one run on one hit and 2 walks.  Damon Jones (6.75) pitched two scoreless innings on a hit, walk, and 2 strike outs.  Braeden Ogle (4.23) pitched one inning and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.

The IronPigs got as close as 5-3 and 6-4, but never could overcome that first inning.  They scored 3 runs in the fourth inning on Darick Hall’s 3-run HR (11).  They scored a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Mickey Moniak.  The IronPigs managed just 5 hits.  Mickey Moniak (.258) went 2-4 with an RBI.  Freddy Galvis went 0-3.  Nick Maton (.194) went 1-5 with a double.  Matt Vierling (.244) went 0-3 with a walk.  Rafael Marchan (.197) went 0-4.  Arquimedes Gamboa (.276) went 0-2 with a walk.

Reading (35-56) beat Bowie, 3-2.  Tyler Phillips was activated and pitched two innings of scoreless, one-hit ball.  He struck out two.  Josh Hendrickson (3.94) pitched five innings and held the Baysox to one run on 3 hits and 3 walks striking out four.  Kyle Dohy (2.86) pitched two innings giving up a run that blew the save on a hit and a walk striking out three.  He stuck around for the win.

Reading scored first on a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Bryson Stott.  They took a late lead with a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Matt Kroon.  They walked off in the ninth on an RBI single by Josh Stephen.  Bryson Stott (.270) went 2-4 with an RBI.  Josh Stephen (.211) went 2-4 with an RBI.  Jhailyn Ortiz (.204) went 1-3 with a walk.

Jersey Shore (40-50) lost to Asheville, 4-1.  Jhordany Mezquita (2-6, 4.82) pitched six innings and gave up one run on 2 hits and a walk striking out eight.  Mark Potter (9.93) pitched 1.2 innings and gave up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Jonas De La Cruz (13.50) pitched 1.1 innings giving up a run on one hit and 3 strikeouts.

The BlueClaws scored their lone run with 2 outs in the ninth inning on an infield single by Nicolas Torres.  Adam Haseley went 1-4 with a double.  DJ Stewart (.231) went 0-3.  Logan O’Hoppe (.269) went 0-4.

Clearwater (39-47)  lost to Bradenton, 5-4 in the completion of a suspended game, 5-4, and 7-4.

Suspended Game:  The game picked up in the ninth and was lost in the tenth.  Upon resumption, the Threshers had to make seven defensive substitutions.  Abrahan Gutierrez, the Threshers DH when the game began, led off the ninth for Bradenton.  2021 NDFA Matt Russell pitched the ninth but didn’t get an out after a failed fielder’s choice set the stage.

Scheduled Game:  Vince Velasquez gave up one hit and struck out three in one rehab inning.  Gabriel Cotto (2.70) pitched four innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and one walk striking out five.  Maikel Garrido (8.16) got a hold for 1.2 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 walks.  Leonel Aponte (5.28) stranded three inherited runners and pitched 1.1 scoreless innings allowing one hit and striking out two.  #8 pick Jason Ruffcorn (6.75) blew the save and lasted 0.2 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks.  #15 pick Matt Osterberg (0-1, 54.00) stranded 3 inherited runners, then gave up a 3-run HR in the tenth.

The Threshers scored all their runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Kervin Pichardo and a 3-run HR (3) by Casey Martin.  Martin (.242) went 1-4 with a walk.  Luis Garcia (.214) went 0-5.  #2 Ethan Wilson (.190) went 0-5.  Johan Rojas (.239) went 0-5.  #13 pick Jared Carr (.238) went 2-4 with 2 doubles.  #12 pick TJ Rumfield (.214) went 0-3 with a walk.  Felix Reyes (.273) went 2-4.

FCL Phillies (13-7) beat the FCL Yankees,10-6, on Monday and the FCL Tigers East, 5-4, on Tuesday.

Monday:  2021 NDFA Konnor Ash made his professional debut and pitched two innings giving up 3 runs (2 ER) on 2 hits and a walk with 4 strikeouts.  Wilson Gherbaz (4-0, 1.86) pitched three innings and gave up one run on 3 hits and a walk.  2021 NDFA Jared Wetherbee made his 2nd appearance and gave up 2 unearned runs in one inning on a hit and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts.  2020 NDFA Corey Phelan (1.29) pitched one scoreless inning, allowed a hit, and struck out a batter.

Marcus Lee Sang (.323) went 2-4 with a double, triple, and 2 RBI.  Jamari Baylor (.316) went 0-4.  Cornelius Randolph (.125) went 1-3 with 2 RBI.  Ben Pelletier (.727) went 2-2 with a double, HR, and 2 RBI.  Junior Ortega (.400) went 2-2 with a HR and RBI.  #3 pick Jordan Viars (.167) went 0-1 with a walk.

Tuesday:  Spencer Van Scoyoc pitched one inning and struck out two of the three batters he faced.  International free agent Lee Ji Tae made his professional debut and retired the three batters he faced.  #17 pick Alex Garbrick pitched two innings in his 2nd appearance and gave up one run on 2 hits and 2 walks striking out three.  Yoan Antonac struck out onein one inning.  2021 NDFA Tristan Garnett pitched two scoreless innings in his 2nd appearance giving up 3 hits and 2 walks.  Tyler Adams got a BS hold going 1.1 innings and giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk.  Jaylen Smith (2.45) allowed one inherited runner to score but picked up his second save giving up one hit in 0.2 innings.

The Phillies scored 2 runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Cornelius Randolph and a fielding error.  They scored a run in the sixth on an RBI double by Ben Pelletier.  And single runs in the seventh and ninth on RBI singles by Wilson Valdez and Guarner Dipre.

Marcus Lee Sang (.314) went 1-4 with a walk.  Jamari Baylor (.333) went 2-3 with a double and walk.  Cornelius Randolph (.200) went 1-2 with an RBI.  Ben Pelletier (.643) went 1-3 with a double and RBI.  #3 Pick Jordan Viars (.143)went 0-1.  2021 NDFA Anthony Quirion went 0-1 with a stolen base.

DSL Phillies Red (12-12) lost to the DSLAngels, 3-1.  Rickardo Perez (.350) went 1-2 with an RBI.

DSL Phillies White (15-8) lost to DSL Giants Black, 4-1.  Yemal Flores (.200) went 0-2 with a walk.

    Interesting names at the FCL. Wish Baylor was doing that in CLW or Jersey Shore. I still remember some being excited about Sang when we took him in the 11th round of 2019. He looks like he is really filling out

    1. I’m probably grasping at straws even mentioning Reyes. He was signed as a nineteen-year-old in February 2020 and lost all of 2020 to the pandemic. His only experience has been this year and he was promoted out of necessity after just two weeks of FCL ball. His size caught my eye. He played first base the first time I saw him. He’s been holding his own, so far.

      He probably goes back to the FCL when Pelletier is activated.

      Though it would have been difficult for him to stay and move up the ladder with guys like OHoppe, Marchan and Duran above him….and on his coat tails Perez, Edwards and Nava and i am sure a few others I am missing.
      I would liked to have seen if they could have got a little more for him next year..

No matter what else is in our system it’s foolish to trade a pedigreed prospect who is having a strong year and could become a more valuable chip in the future (or maybe even the one guy out of all our young C that becomes JTR’s heir apparent). I get we need lefties but I’d rather still have AG.

  8. Hall (HR number 11) and Stott (another two hit game) continue to swing hot bats
    And LHP Erubiel Armenta strikes out 6 in 2 innings worked….74% strikes
    Like to see if Armenta can do that vs Double A hitters.

    1. I was following Armenta closely this season. In Clearwater he was unhittable but then had trouble adjusting in JS. Last 2 outings he is coming around. Very young and hasn’t filled out yet. The lefty has only pitched in 12 games this year totally 17 innings. Of the 51 outs he has recorded he has struck out 38 batters. But he has walked 14 in those 17 innings.

          1. He relies on a changeup as his offspeed pitch and has young hitters completely fooled with it. Changeup pitchers are less likely to be LOOGYs because they have a weapon against right handed hitters. No idea if his stuff (fastball 93-95) will translate to upper levels, but if he continues to dominate A ball they should push him.

  9. This team is forever in purgatory and if you think the problems will be solved by throwing more money at free agents and big league contracts you’re sadly mistaken. We literally are the Angels of the National League. You can’t buy your way out of the inability to choose and develop good young players. I hate this organization right now. Middleton – this is all on you.

        Wow…….from the eyewitness reports and scouting ratings….average across the board Probably not a Gold Glove candidate in the future..

      2. Most scouts who have seen him, speculate that he profiles better as a third baseman or second baseman with second base being his best fit. From when I first saw him, I thought he would be a second baseman.

  14. Stott went 3-5 Sunday afternoon and his average is up to .291. Does anyone think the Phillies move him to AAA for the final month?

    1. ciada……I think they will …..to let him face some AAA pitching before the off-season.
      Next year probably starts @LHV and hopefully does well enough to get a call-up around mid-season.
      Like Jim said…maybe 2nd base is his future….he has played a few games there in the past.

        1. Yes…..AFL, not sure how they will do it this fall, but Stott should be one of those selected to go.
          And Ortiz would also be one ….maybe Marchan , but since he has MLB service time now, he may not be eligible.
          O’Hoppe is another if they let A level players participate.
          Pitchers….possibly 2 or 3 of their relievers could stand to benefit., like Dohy, Warren and a few others.

          The AFL will begin on Oct. 13 … end Nov 20…the championship game
          ….. 30 game schedules for the six teams and played at their respective sites….: Salt River Fields, Peoria Sports Complex, Surprise Stadium, Scottsdale Stadium, Camelback Ranch and Sloan Field.
          Each of the six AFL teams—Salt River, Peoria, Surprise, Mesa, Glendale and Scottsdale—will have 35-man rosters with seven prospects apiece from five MLB clubs per roster.
          So besides hopefully Stott and Ortiz…five other should be chosen to go.

  17. 33 year old relief pitcher from FCL (Zach McAllister) is now in LHV and a 28 year old relief pitcher who was released by Seattle 12 days ago (Taylor Guerrieri) is on LHV roster.

  18. Bryan Minniti and Scott Proefrock no longer assistant GM’s, consultants next year. Josh Bonifay no longer Director of Player Development. Offered scouting position for next year. DD said he wanted development to go in a different direction.

    1. The contracts for yjr former assistant GMs Bryan Minniti and Scott Proefrock ran through the 2021 season. …so they may wnat to look for other positions even though they will get paid for another year it looks thru 2022.
      Scott Proefrock is in his 60s I think….so he may just retire.
      Ned Rice is still there…and he signed a two-year extension back in Feb.

    Stott is scorching. .411/.448/.684 in August. Would be so great if he develops into what we hoped Kingery would be.

    1. He’d have to be Kingery without the speed I think, so I’m not really feeling that comp as that was a big part of his appeal. But if you just mean “an everyday player” then absolutely.

      1. I was thinking more along the lines of everyday regular that can fill multiple infield positions and give you production at the plate.
