Threshers’ and Affiliates’ Recap – 5/8/2021

We took 3 out of 4 last night.  Clearwater rallied for 4 runs to walk off against Lakeland.  Lehigh Valley used a balanced attack plus solid pitching to post a victory against Rochester.  Reading beat Erie and an old friend, pitcher Ricardo Pinto.  And, Jersey Shore withered under the relentless attack from Hudson Valley.

Clearwater (3-2) beat Lakeland, 4-3, walking off with 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth.

The Threshers were in danger of wasting some fine pitching from several of their young hurlers when an offense that had been impotent for eight innings exploded in the ninth.

Through eight innings, the home team had two hits, a walk, a hit batter a reached on an error, and ten strikeouts.  On several of those, they were caught looking.

A rally seemed implausible.  Yet, as I began packing my things in the press box, Luis Garcia led off with a walk.  I typed a text to an old GCL buddy.  An old joke between us regarding ninth inning rallies when trailing by three runs, “Score two runs or four runs, but not three”.   As Casey Martin sped around the bases on a double into right field, I pressed send.  DJ Stewart smacked an RBI single to right and Garcia scored.  Abrahan Gutierrez hit one through the same hole to plate Martin.  After a strikeout, Hunter Markwardt lined a ball into the right center field gap.  He pulled up at second with a double as his mates both crossed the plat.  Pandemonium ensued.

In my opinion, there is nothing better than the celebrations of the young men who play baseball in the lower levels of the minors.  It’s so much fun to watch.

There really was little other offense to report.  Edgar Made walked in the third (and was picked off) after I announced to the press box that Lakeland had a perfect game going.  The next inning, DJ Stewart singled(following a fielding error) after I reminded the press box that Lakeland still had a no hitter.  We got a hit batter and a balk in the fifth.  And a single in the sixth,  We struck out three times in both the fifth and eighth innings.  They combined to strike out eleven times.

Five pitchers held Lakeland to 3 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 14 batters.

  1. Jordi Martinez – 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K. Pulled due to pitch count (28)

They added a run in the seventh on Matt Vierling’s leadoff HR (1).

  1. Mark Appel. Could be the feel good story of the year. Wishing him well.

  2. Stephen got sent down to Reading to help their lineup and to be an OF there. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see he and Randolph switch teams.
I’m happy to see Listi come out hitting as he had to be upset not to get invited to major league spring training.
I ado agree that the minor league walk off is very enjoyable.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

  3. Zach Warren had a hard time finding the strike zone last night…his first outing he was superb with no walks in 2 innings on Wednesday. Last night 4 batters getting a free pass in less than an inning pitched….I am hopeful and confident he will regain his control.

  4. From Reading’s pitchers last night.; my grandsons shared a hot tub at LaQuinta’s in Clearwater in ST 2020; Tyler Carr and Taylor Lehman. Mr. Tall and Mr. Small. 2 of the nicest guys and hope they progress together up to The Show.

    1. One of the cool things about spring training and staying near Lenny’s. Always players in the pool area at day’s end and they’re always good guys, even when they only speak Spanish.

      1. Hopefully the Phillies don’t build the players’ housing complex at their complex. It will take away this happenstance.

  5. Jordi Martinez is throwing 94-95 as a 20 year old? That’s good to see.

Cristopher Sanchez started at Lehigh, is that the plan? Or it was just an opener?

Obviously short sample size, but Luke Williams might be in the mix for the LF job in 2021. Or at worst, a utility guy.
