Threshers’ and Affiliates’ Recap – 5/7/2021

On a night when the big club kicked some butt in Asslanta, the affiliates split again. with one team coming within one pitch, one bobble of that third win.

Clearwater was that team.  An apparent missed third strike by the umpire with two outs didn’t seem to matter when the ball was hit to Edgar Made (ma-day’) at third base.  It was hit hard and he bobbled the ball before throwing late to first.  Lakeland tied the game and went o to score 4 runs in overtime.  Lehigh Valley dug too deep a hole to walk off and lost.  Reading picked up their first win of the season.  And, Jersey Shore was one-hit but won the game.

Clearwater (2-2) wasted excellent pitching in regulation, losing to Lakeland, 6-2 in ten.

It wasn’t the two-run support that cost the Threshers the game.  It was the defense that two unearned runs in regular time.

Starlyn Castillo was sharp.  He stranded a two-out double in the first inning.  He dominated after a leadoff walk in the second, recording two Ks and a comebacker.  And, he was solid in the third, giving up a leadoff single and getting a routine double-play grounder.  However, the base runner got a good jump, and the only play for second baseman Luis Garcia was first base.  After a fly out to left, Castillo got a ground ball to Rixon Wingrove at first.  Or rather, to Wingrove in the hole.  Didn’t matter, he swatted it away for an error.  Castillo struck out the next batter.  He finished 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.  He threw 50 pitches, 27 fastballs, sat 92-94 mph, and touched 95 a couple times and 96 once.  He leaned on a curveball that he threw about 19 times, averaging 80 mph.  He mixed in a couple changeups at like 87.

If Castillo was sharp, Rafael Marcano was a razor.  He hit the first batter.  Well, listen to this.  The batter ran up in the box to bunt the pitch.  He was hit by the ball and awarded first base after the base umpire ruled he didn’t offer at the pitch. I call BS, but it didn’t matter.  Marcano struck out the side.  He got 2 ground balls to Made and a strikeout in the fifth.  He got a fly ball to Johan Rohas in center and 2 more Ks in the sixth. Having thrown just 36 pitches, he was brought out to pitch the seventh.  He started with another fly ball to Rojas.  After that a single.  Then, he got an inning-ending, double play, sharp comebacker that he lofted into center field.  He got another strikeout before a run-scoring single ended his night.  Nick Lackney ended the inning with a walk and a strikeout.

Marcano’s line was 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 7 K.  He threw 58 pitches, 23 were fastballs, sitting 92-93 mph.  He touched 94 a couple times and dipped to 91 a couple more.  He attacked the back leg of right-handed batters with a changeup that he threw a dozen times to great effect getting 6 swings and misses.  He threw 4 curves and picked up a couple more s&ms.  He also threw about 18 sliders.

Lackney’s line was 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  He threw just 10 pitches.  He averaged 92 with a couple 2-seamers.  He threw a couple changeups and half-a-dozen sliders.

Gabriel Yanez opened the eighth with back-to-back singles.  He steadied himself with a three-pitch strikeout and then got a couple fly balls.  He opened the ninth with a pair of strikeouts in just 7 pitches.  Then the wheels came off.  Made bobbled and threw late.  Yanez walked a batter on 5 pitches.  And a single to RF on the 8th pitch of the at bat,  that just eluded the grasp of a diving Hunter Markwardt sent the game into the bottom of the ninth.  A 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth sent the game into OT.

Yanez’ line was 2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K.  He threw 36 pitches – 10 fastballs, 8 changeups, 9 curveballs, and 9 sliders.  His fastball is slow – averaging 89.5 mph.

Alejandro Made joined the party and didn’t bring any wheels.  He promptly issued an RBI single followed by a walk and sac bunt.  A pop-up brought the inning closer to an end, but not close enough.  A walk loaded the bases.  Then, a wild pitch and another run.  A walk,  another wild pitch, and another run.  Relief came in the form of Fernando Lozano.  but a double brought another run home before a strikeout ended the inning.

Made’s line was 2.0 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K.  He threw 26 pitches.  He’s another guy with a soft fastball.  He threw 6 and averaged just under 90 mph.  His repertoire includes a sparingly used changeup and a curveball and slider he relies on.

Lozano’s line was 0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K.  He threw just 7 pitches – fastball, changeup, curveball, slider.  He threw just 3 FB at 88, 89, 90.

The Threshers scored a run in the second inning without a hit.  They drew 3 walks and scored on a wild pitch.  They got their first hit in the third.  They added an insurance run on Abrahan Gutierrez’ opposite field HR to lead off the sixth to stake the pitchers to a 2-0 lead.

The Threshers collected just 5 hits.  They added 5 walks and 2 its batters, but that was countered by 15 strikeouts.  Edgar Made stole his second base, Rojas and Garcia got their first.  Luis Garcia went 2-4 with a walk.  Gutierrez went 1-3, R, RBI, HR, 2 BB.

The upcoming piggybacks –

  • 5/8 – Jordi Martinez/Rodolfo Sanchez
  • 5/9 – Mayer/Hernandez (again)
  • 5/10 – Monday, off day

Lehigh Valley (3-1) lost to Rochester, 10-3.

Kyle Glogoski started after being called up from Reading because three games into the season, Lehigh Valley didn’t have any pitchers available to start.  He gave up a leadoff HR in the first then struck out the side.  However, he couldn’t get an out in the second, leaving the bases loaded and a couple more runs in.  Jeff Singer came in and let all three inherited runners score as well as a run of his own in two innings.  Ramon Rosso gave up a run in three innings.  David Paulino gave up the final two runs and fell short of saving the bullpen.  Neftali Feliz had to come in to get the last out.

The IronPigs actually had a lead when they scored three runs in the bottom of the first on 3 bases-loaded walks.  The rest of their offense consisted of 3 hits – a double by Austin Listi and singles by Rafael Marchan and Luke Williams.  They also drew 7 walks, 6 of them coming in the first inning.

Williams stole a base.  Travis Jankowski had 2 outfield assists.

Reading (1-3) beat Erie, 8-4.

Reading scored three runs in the first inning and maintained at least a two-run lead the rest of the way.  They opened the scoring on Daniel Brito’s RBI single.  They added 2 more on Josh Stephen’s sac fly and a throwing error on the play.  They added single runs in the third and fourth on Stephen’s RBI single and Luke Millers’ solo HR his second of the season.  They added to their lead in the sixth on Miller’s sac fly, Brito’s 2-run single.

Jhordany Mezquita was called up from Jersey Shore to start.  He pitched 3,0 innings and allowed a single run on 4 hits, walked two, and struck out four.  Andrew Brown went 2.1 innings and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and no walks, striking out two.  Jonathan Hennigan went 1.2 innings and gave up a run on 2 hits and 3 walks.  Jake Hernandez went two innings and allowed a hit and a walk while striking out 4batters.  He was awarded the win by the scorer.

Brito went 2-5 with a run, 3 RBI.  Dalton Guthrie went 2-5 with a run scored.  Matt Vierling went 2-3with a run and 2 walks.  Stephen went 1-2 with 2 RBI, SF, 2 RBI.  Miller went 1-3 with a run, 2 RBI, SF, HR.

Matt Vierling also stole 2 bases.

Jersey Shore( 3-1) shut out Hudson Valley 1-0.

A pitchers’ battle all the way.  HV held us to one hit, we held them to three.

Adam Leverett went three innings.  His line – 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.

Victor Santos went two – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.

Aneury Zabala went two – 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K.

Mike Adams went one – 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K.

Mark Potter went one for the save – 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.

The game remained tied into the seventh inning.

Bryson Stott had doubled in the first inning, the BlueClaws only hit.  HV got a leadoff single in the second wiped out stealing by Logan O’Hoppe.  HV got a leadoff walk in the third that was balked to second but didn’t capitalize.  HV got 2 one-out walks in the fourth followed by 2 Ks.  Another leadoff walk in the sixth for HV and a steal with one out but couldn’t; score.   HV got a 2-out double in the seventh to no avail.  Stott walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh, the Claws first base runner since Stott in the first.  Stott stole second, strikeout, wild pitch to third, strikeout, Rudy Rott was hit by a pitch, Rott steals second and Stott scores on a wild pitch, strikeout.  HV got a base runner in the eight with 2 out on Stott’s error.  Herbert Iser was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the inning.  Potter secured the win with 3 strikeouts in the ninth,  HV got a meaningless two-out single.

Stott and Rott each stole their second bases of the season.

  1. So glad to read how Castillo is pitching now…seems like its been 10 years since they signed him for that big bonus, and he has pitched in a competitive game. .
Maybe he will turn into another stud pitcher along the lines of Sixto.
And in Abrahan Gutierrez Phillies may have another hot catching rospect….in the FIL he was impressive.

Wonder, are the ‘Made’s….Edgar and Alejandro related?

  2. Do you think Glogoski is pitching at the correct level. Surprised to see start at LV but surprised to see him struggle.

  3. Just now read Jimbo’s words about Glogoski. Had only looked at the box score. Maybe now he’ll be itching to get back if/when he is sent down to Reading.
