Box Score Recap – 6/5/2017

Lehigh Valley crushed Buffalo behind Tom Eshelman and their potent offense.

Clearwater was one-hit while dropping a double header with an impotent offense.

Lehigh Valley (37-19) trounced Buffalo, 12-1.

Tom Eshelman (4-0, 1.38) posted a great line -7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 86 pitches, 62 strikes (72.1%), game score 75.  Jesen Therrien retired the 6 batters he face in 2.0 innings, striking out two.

Hector Gomez (.253) led the way with 4 hits, a triple, HR (4), and 3 RBI.  Cameron Perkins (.296) and Nick Williams had 3 hits apiece.  J.P. Crawford and Pedro Florimon (.303) had 2 hits each.  Florimon hit his 3rd HR and had 2 RBI.  Williams and Rhys Hoskins also had 2 RBI.

Just something to chew on.  In the eight games since Roman Quinn went down with an arm injury on May 28th, Perkins has led off in 8 games and played center field in 5 of 8.  He has gone 11 for 30 (.367) with 7 walks,  6 runs scored, 2 RBI, 1 HR and 6 K.  His BB % has been 18.4% and his K%, 15.8%.  His batting average has risen from  .279 to .296.  I know it’s a SSS, but bench guys can only perform when given a chance.  And Perkins is taking advantage of his opportunity.

Game One:  Franklyn Kilome shut out the Stone Crabs for 5.0 innings and held them to one hit.  But, he had severe control problems and walked 5 batters and needed 93 pitches (55 strikes, 59.1%) to navigate those five innings.  His FB ran 91-95 MPH and he touched 96 and 97 MPH.  Tyler Gilbert also issued a couple walks.  One that led off the seventh led to the winning run when the Crabs were able to bunt him into scoring position and single him home.

The Threshers managed just two base runners a two-out Drew Stankiewicz in the fifth and a one-out, bunt single by Emmanuel Marrero.

Charlotte had 3 rehabbing players in their line up – right-handed reliever Brad Boxberger who struck out the side in the first inning, DH Peter Bourjos who went 0-4 again, and catcher Wilson Ramos who went 0-1 with a walk.

  • Game Two:  Cole Irvin (2.84) allowed 2 unearned runs in 6.0 innings on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out seven.  Matt Hockenberry (3.77) relieved and walked the first batter he faced. After a strike out and catcher’s interference, Jeff Singer (1.48) came in and struck out 3 in 1.2 innings.  Harold Arauz (1.84) pitched 3.0, one-hit innings.  Luke Leftwich (3.66) entered for the 12th inning and gave up a lead off triple that eventually became the winning run.

The Threshers hit a little better in the night cap, but still only managed 2 runs on Jan Hernandez’ 2-run single in the sixth inning.  Mark Laird and Hernandez had 2 hits each.

  1. I see Jim hasn’t synced up the DSL teams yet so I thought I’d put something about them on the site.

The Red and White DSL teams have started their seasons. Both are 1 – 1. For the White team: Aparicio is 1 – 4. Tortolero is 1 – 4. Torres is 1-4 with a BB. The 1st game’s stats are nowhere to be found. The only way I know they are 1-1 is the standings show they are 1-1. The hottest guy on the team is an 18 y/o backup catcher named Juan Mendez. He DH’ed and went 4-5 with a triple and 2 RBIs. They had him hitting 3rd in the lineup so he could be someone to watch. This is his 1st year.

Mujica is 1-8 with a RBI and a SB. Maximo DeLa Rosa, a 17 y/o OF’er, is 4-6 with 2B, SB and a RBI. He’s listed at 6’2″ 205. There could be something here.

Sam Hiciano is listed as the Red Teams hitting coach.

    1. I found the White game in the league scores section but the stats are not recorded on individual players. If you go to the June 3rd games and find the White box score and then pick a player, say Jose Tortelero. He went 2 – 3 in the first game. But on his individual page, it says he only played on June 5 and went 1 – 4. Even his summary has 1 for 4. The Red team’s players stats include both games.

And it looks like Jim added the DSL box scores.

  2. Anyone have a report on Therrien as a potential bullpen arm? He has gotten a lot of K’s in high A and AA but I was wondering if that would actually translate to majors. He also has really cut down on walks which seems to be a good sign going forward.

    1. What does he throw and at what velocity? Results look great

    1. The biggest development is Perkins significantly improving his walk rate. It’s a huge development. If that improvement sticks, it means he really does have a potential future as a major leaguer, although it might not be with the Phillies. Good for him.

  3. Kind of makes you wonder if Cam had been given the opportunity Goeddel received last year what he would have done with it.

    1. Honestly, he probably benefitted more by being in the minors and continuing to develop. Goeddel was hurt by not having the development time last year.

  4. Jim- any velocity reports on Irvin? Thanks in advance. And if so for that game, is Singer still holding at low to mid 90s

  5. Quinn is expected back shortly but I’m worried about Eflin elbow pain. Congrats to Sandberg on getting back to Clearwater. Who will go up to Lakewood now? Short season ball starting soon.

  6. The Lone Ranger Suarez today – 7 shutout innings, 2 hits, 1 bb, 9 K’s, season ERA 1.72
When is the next flight to Clearwater?
