Box Score Recap – 6/2/2017

Lehigh Valley, Reading, and Lakewood lost on the road.  Nick Williams hit his 11th home run and Mitch Walding hit 2 more, his fourth in the last two games.

Clearwater rallied to tie in the 9th and win in the 11th on Grenny Cumana’s first home run of the season.

Lehigh Valley (36-18) lost to Louisville, 8-5.

Zach Eflin (1-1, 4.00) had rough night.  He gave up 4 runs on 8 hihts and a walk in 4.0 innings.  He struck out two.  The IronPigs closed the gap to a run, but Pat Venditte (1.24) was touched for 3 runs (2 ER) on 4 hits and a walk in 2.0 innings.  Jesen Therrien made his first appearance for Lehigh and struck out 2 in 2.0 innings.  He gave up 2 runs and an unearned run but issued no walks.

Taylor Featherston (.286) had 3 hits and 2 RBI.  Nick Williams had 2 hits, a HR (11) and 3 RBI. Williams also had an outfield assist, throwing out Darnell Sweeney at third base trying to stretch a double into a triple in the first inning.  J.P. Crawford made the relay.

Clearwater (31-24) moved two games ahead in the division race with an exciting come from behind, extra-inning walk-off victory over Florida, 3-2.

Edgar Garcia (4.20) held the Frogs to one run on 2 hits and 3 walks in 5.0 innings.  He struck out five.  His FB sat 93-94 MPH.  Luke Leftwich (3.48) pitched 3.0 inningts and gave up one run.  Tyler Frohwirth finally made his first appearance in the ninth inning of a game the Threshers trailed by one run.  The young side-armer must have been excited, he touched 80 MPH on several pitches.  He shut the frogs out and struck out a batter with a 74 MPH fastball(?).  Jeff Singer (3-1, 1.57) picked up the win with 2.0 scoreless innings, striking out three.

The Threshers scored a run in the first inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out.  They only got one run on Deivi Grullon’s first of two double play balls.  The blunder almost proved costly, as the Threshers continued to put runners on base in all but he seventh inning, but failed to convert.  In the ninth and trailing by a run, Jan Hernandez opened with a double to left field.  Hernandez moved to third on a Drew Stankiewicz ground out to first, but couldn’t score on a Grenny Cumana ground out to third.  He scored on Herlis Rodriguez’ ground single into the hole between first and second.  Although the ball was stopped, Rodriguez easily beat the pitcher to the bag as Hernandez crossed the plate with the tying run.

The Threshers threatened in the tenth, but didn’t score until Cumana launched his game winner deep over the left field fence in the eleventh.

Cumana, Deivi Grullon, and Mark Laird had 2 hits each.  Rodriguez stole his 6th base.

Seven Threshers were selected for the North Division All Star Team.  With Zach Coppola’s promotion to Reading, Herlis Rodriguez was selected in his place.

In case you missed it, here’s an interview of Cornelius Randolph by Kirsten Karbach.  It’s short but insightful.

  • # 5 Kilome (3-2, 3.02): DNP
  • #10 Randolph (.231): 0-4 with 3 K and a sacrifice
  • #27 Ed. Garcia (1-1, 4.20): 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
  • #29 Pujols (.189): DNP

Lakewood (31-24) lost to Asheville, 7-1.

Felix Paulino (1-5, 6.16) gave up 3 runs in 5.0 innings on 7 hits and 2 walks.  He struck out three.  Jonathan Hennigan (5.40) gave up 2 runs in 2.0 innings.  Trevor Bettencourt (1.45) gave up 2 more in his one inning.

Henri Lartigue (.261) had 2 hits both doubles.

  1. Well I always rep when Crawford has a good game , so I guess I do the same when he has a bad one,
Although the 290 average is one I will gladly take, it also seems like a lot of my favs had a bad games, Randolph, Moniak and Crawford
However it’s good to see Williams look like the 2015 version.

  2. What a blah night! Across the board. Is this the part where it’s darkest before the dawn?

….but how about that Nick “Jr” Williams!

  3. Edgar Garcia is making some noise in CLW. The 20 y/o has made 3 starts and 2 have been pretty darn good. He’s been mostly a reliever in his 4 years in the org. but he might be ready to break out as a starter. He pitches far better at home than on the road with a 1.59 ERA versus 7.62 on the road. As he gets more accustom to the road mounds and arenas around the league, that should get better.

  4. Coppola played CF and Tocci moved to LF interestingly with Tromp in RF. I assume they’ll take turns and rotate. Aaron Brown?
Pretty much a bad night other than Williams

    1. Murray, I don’t understand that. It has long been the case that Tocci is a high level defensive CF. Why would he move to LF?

      1. matt13…I think for development purposes they play all their OFers in every position out there, left to right, at least give them a taste of each …they did that with Altherr, Cozens, Quinn, Williams and many others as they were coming up.

      2. There’s value in being able to play CF and less value in the corners. However, to be a valuable 5th OF you have to be able to play all three. I guess they’re trying to maximize both guys’ value. It was a surprise to me…

      3. Maybe the coaching staff trying to get a feel for Coppola in CF to see if he can be a legitimate option there.

  5. Looks like the DSL teams are getting ready to rumble in a few weeks down at the new academy. The ‘red’ roster is getting loaded for sure.
Names I did not see on the above list, and who may start in the GCL, are RHP Francisco Morales, ss Brayan Gonzalez, catcher Juan Aparicio, ss Jose Tortolero and ss Nicholas Torres….all of the top high bonus signings from this past international signing period..

    1. The DSL actually starts games today! It’s awfully weird to see date of births in 2000. It sure makes me feel old.

      1. Bellman take heart. Romus was born in 1840 now that is old. Nice games last night, had tickets gave them to my son and his girlfriend. Lucky i didnt go i would have done nothing but eat. and i am too fat to do that. These team we will those meaning less games in september to give false hope

    2. Tortolero, torres and Aparacio are on the While Roster. Luigi Mujica is on the Red Roster. Bryan Gonzalez and Franco Morales look like they’ll start in the GCL.

      1. Ok thanks bellman for finding them…I guess I should not be so lazy on this Sat morning.

      2. bellman…after looking at the rosters…..many smallish youngsters….but the one who really stands out is Maximo De La Rosa, OFer…a $150K signee with very good size compared to the others…6’2″, 205 lbs. I hope he can be someone, at 17, who will develop into a premier prospect.

  6. Cozens came out of the game. If both he and Quinn are injured Featherston will slot in left field with two more games remaining on “western” road swing.

Note 5 OF on Reading roster and that doesn’t count Aaron Brown stashed on “Williamsport”. Could we see some movement as both teams return to Pennsylvania on Monday? I’m already on record predicting a Kingery/Flores swap (no sources, just a feeling) but maybe Pullin too.

    1. Would like to see how Kingery handles AAA and the junk ballers and and 30 something year olds desperately fighting to get to the majors or back to the majors.
I feel like AAA while it is right before the majors doesn’t necessarily reflect the playing style of the majors

      1. I have talked about how tought AAA is on hitters The junk ball pitchers, the bad umps its tough place to play imo

    2. Was wondering myself why Cozens left early in a close game. Tight lips from within when it comes to injury updates.

      1. Not so much tight lips compared with hockey–that’s Fort Knox stuff there. Just no one to ask questions in Louisville and depend on emails and texts. Listen to entire radio broadcast yields some info. We’ll know for sure soon enough–but if Cozens can bat tonight but not run bases then we’ll assume (yeah I know) “lower body.” The fact that Quinn couldn’t run –maybe planning a DL move or maybe more than “arm” or maybe worse than I was told. We’ll see.

  7. Jeff Singer with the win…i hope his dad is happy and he discounts the car im trying to buy from him!
