Box Score Recap – 5/17/2016

Tommy Joseph hit his first major league home run Tuesday night.  He led off the second inning and fell behind 0-2 before hitting a 1-2 fastball off the screen attached to the left field fair pole.  Joseph lined an 0-2 fastball to right for a single in his second at bat in the fourth inning.  In the sixth inning, Joseph lined a single off yet another fastball to center field on a 3-2 pitch on the eighth pitch of the at bat.  Marcel Ozuna misplayed the ball and Cesar Hernandez scored the Phillies’ third run while Joseph chugged into third.  He struck out on a slider on the fourth pitch of his final at bat in the eighth inning.  All three hits came off four-seam fastballs.  So, in three games he has gone 4-10 with a HR (1), BB, RBI, and 4 K.  Now for the bad news.  The Phillies won’t see a left-handed starter until the Cubs’ series assuming we get Lester (5/27-29). although there might be DH opportunities in the Tiger’s series (5/23-25).

Lehigh Valley (20-18) Beat Syracuse, 5-4 in ten innings.  Alec Asher threw six perfect innings before the “wheels came off” in the seventh.  He gave up a double, single, and 2 home runs before retiring the second out of the inning.  During the “meltdown”, he blew the four run lead his offense had provided.  Asher only threw 88 pitches on the night, and if GameDay is accurate, he entered the seventh having thrown only 74.  Michael Mariot made his first AAA rehab appearance.  Luis Garcia got the win.  Hunter, Sweeney, and Venable had multi-hit games.  Hunter hit his third home run.  Sweeney scored the winning run on a wild pitch with one out and Brock Stassi at the plate.

  • Asher – 7.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 99 pitches/58 strikes.

Reading (25-13) Beat Bowie, 9-1.  Nick Pivetta (4-2, 3.27) shut out the Baysox on 2 hits for seven innings.  Tom Windle and Joely Rodriguez mopped up.  Everybody hit, as the Phils amassed 15 hits.  KC Serna had 4, Dylan Cozens had 2, and J.P. Crawford had 3 with 3 RBI. Jorge Alfaro and Jake Fox hit home runs.

  • Pivetta – 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 96 pitches/62 strikes.
  • Quinn (.254) went 1-5 with a BB, RBI, and SB (17).
  • Crawford (.262) went 3-6 with a double and 3 RBI.
  • Alfaro (.362) went 1-6 with a HR (2), and RBI(15).

  1. Lakewood had 10 hits, a walk and 2 hit batsmen and scored 1 run. Only 2 DPs also. Not very good production there but the stat sheet was full.

Crawford was hitting .182 in his previous 9 games before yesterday. He’s still getting his BBs though so his OBP still looks darn good. You have to go back to 2014 to find a year where his Ks were greater than his BBs. That was in 63 games at CLW after his promotion mid-year.

  2. Congrats to Tommy Joseph who has show much intestinal fortitude dealing with his concussion issues and making the position switch to 1b. Don’t know how long his ML career might last but he reached a goal very few are able to obtain..

    1. Agree. What’s funny is we all wrote him off- he wasn’t on the Top 30. Hope he has years of success

  3. I heard bowa talk about Crawford yesterday. He said he needs to work on his backhand at shortstop. Lacks confidence in his backhand. like galvis used to. and he said he has 7 or 8 errors which is too much. Especially now, cause the minor league fields he plays on are excellent. found that interesting. Also really concerned with nick Williams hitting under 200 against left-hand pitching with a 194 obp. Hope he learns to hit lefthanders or he will be a platoon player.

    1. rocco…normally I would be worried about Williams vs LHPs but the entire league slash for actually both sides is only .250/ .318/ /.682 …and for lefty on lefty it is even lower. He may near the bottom but not far off the pace…he need to face them more.
He has only faced them for 37 PAs….that is really too small of a sampling to evaluate. Whereas RHP he has face 97 times with a slash of 308/.340/ .813

      1. Reason romus to me was, I look at his and Joseph. Joseph slash against right is 340 and little higher against lefthanders, So he is hitting both in minors. So the Phillies will have to make a decision on Howard like people on here have said. I really think if joseph can hit, it really puts us ahead of schedule in terms of rebuild. But with that mets pitching staff. I am leaning like the Phillies towards more pitching in draft. Need that ace. combine with vv and Nola. makes us young and coming. I don’t know if Thompson is that guy, I liked pinto when I saw him. don’t know his projections either

        1. rocco….RHBs faced RHPs their entire life at a cli[p of 75% or more…from Little League thru the pros…so they will hit them better than LHB vs LHPs.

        2. I saw Pinto in Bowie tonight and he looked great for 3 innings and then unraveled. He stopped missing bats and was getting tagged mightily in blowing a 6-run lead to a slumping Bay Sox team.. I had never seen him pitch before and had high hopes but he didn’t adjust the way a starter needs to. I’ll be curious going forward to see if he can pitch late into games.

  4. Now TJ gets rewarded by sitting until Detroit next Monday. No lefty starters until then. Very impressed with his bat quickness. And though he’s not a base stealer, he runs pretty well for a former catcher. And he seems to be a character guy. Great story!

    1. They need to keep playing him against RHP. I don’t know if they will but they should. Play him today and let him get rolling and confident.

      1. Buddy,

Unfortunately, Joseph is not on the line up card today so it looks like Mack is sticking to the platoon.

        1. This might not be a platoon decision. Howard has a favorable batting history against Koehler (.313 in 16 AB) over the last 5 years. Or maybe it is just the righty/lefty thing.

  5. Luis garcia lit up the radar gun last night sitting 96-99 and touched 100 on one occassion and 101 on another.

    1. Steve,

And what’s with Serna? Hitting 367.

Last year he was 317 at Reading before failing at LHV. Maybe this year he can be promoted and stick. We talk about a lot of infield prospects but rarely mention Serna. Maybe he should be part of the conversation now.

  6. Glad to see Tommy Joseph doing what he loves to do.
May be better for him at the plate to be a first baseman vs a catcher since less demanding/stressful and easier to handle defensively.
Like to see his first three years offensively of pro ball start to come back to some degree or better. Approx PA 1500…2B-80….HRs-50…slash- 255/315/765
Not great numbers as a 18-20 year old….but did show power potential.

  7. This is getting beyond ridiculous with the Howard/Joseph thing. Let’s get this straight: the Phillies are an offensively challenged team, Joseph has given them a spark but now he gets to sit in favor of the corpse of Ryan Howard? This is a joke at this point. Howard offers nothing. but because he was great 5 years ago the team is scared to say “thanks for all you have done, but your time has passed, we’re gonna play the kid a bit?” Lets see Joseph vs some RHPs. He is exactly the kind of guy who you want to see as many at bats from, because hes in the “MAYBE he’s a future ML starter, Maybe hes not” category. There’s only one way to find out where he fits in the teams future, and it sure as heck aint by sitting him against any pitcher that is not left handed. The blind loyalty to Howard has to stop. They say they don’t want to embarrass the guy buy benching him, but at this point, nothing can be more embarrassing than having him flail around at the plate.

    1. I think Mackanin will let Joseph go against some RHPs and it will probably be soon like this weekend against the Braves. As long as Howard keeps on struggling, I think he’ll give Joseph a shot here and there and if hes productive I think he’ll increase it to the point where he’s the clear starter. I think it’ll be slow but I do think it will happen.

      1. Agree that I think Joseph will get some playing time against RH pitchers as well over the next couple of days..

        1. Agreed. The blind trust in Ryan Howard is now officially surreal. He’s not a major league quality player anymore – he’s a shadow of his former self. I don’t understand anything about what they are doing with him. Not do I understand the failure to give Blanco more at bats. I like a lot of things about Pete but certain things are beginning to annoy me quite a bit.

      2. TJ needs to play 3/4 of the time; Howard 1/4. I think at this point Mackanin will see it this way. In general, I have more faith in Mackanin to be an open-minded, flexible manager than Sandberg and Manual were.

        1. Sorry Vermont….Mack a few minutes ago after the game said to LA and Franzke….paraphrasing…..I like Joseph but at the same time, we need to get Howard in the lineup .
          Oy vey!

            1. On off day like tomorrow would be ideal to hold the press conference to announce his release. Give him his due.

            1. If Ryan had some sort of an ailment a 15-Day DL stent would be a temporary thing to do. Give them some time to think it over.

    2. Right on. C’mon, Pete! Break the old culture code and let the kid play. Let’s see him in today’s lineup.

      1. 8mark,

Unfortunately the line up card is out and Joseph’s name isn’t on it.

Maybe Saturday would be a good start against a RHP, resting Howard in a day game after a night game.

    1. DMAR….Mack has not said that at all…..he only has said that the corner OFers are not producing and when Asche is ready he goes to LF and Goeddel probably to RF and Bourjos, though he likes his defense, needs to pick it up at the plate prior to Asche’s return.
Have not heard anything yet on Joseph’s platooning.

    2. its been implied. Why else would you sit a guy who just had 3 hits and his first ML home run. I fear that Joseph is going to end up like Ruf, playing so sparingly that they feel enormous pressure when in the lineup that makes them try too hard. If the phillies straight up released Howard and paid him to go away, it would be a + value move for the team. And yes, it stinks feeling this way about a guy who was once a franchise cornerstone, but he cant hit, he cant field, he cant throw…he does not belong on the team at this point.

    3. This is beyond respect for a noble veteran. Ryan Howard is no longer a major league calibre player. Granted there is plenty of non-major league worthy talent in the bigs right now, but not at the end of their potential usefulness. Shame. Real shame.

        1. Maybe the Phillies can come up with a phantom injury to put him on the DL for some length of time? It would be the best way to allow Joseph to play more and keep Howard’s dignity by not embarrassing him.

          1. Phone conversation:
Klentak – “Hello, Ryan. It’s Matt.”
            Howard – “What’s up Matt?”
Klentak – “We’re going to place you on the DL.”
            Howard – “I’m not hurt.”
Klentak – “Uh…well…I think you are. Maybe you just don’t know it.”
            Howard – “Oh…okay then.”

  8. Sheesh I sure hope no one in the Org from the top to Pete feels as if they owe Howard any more than the checks he is cashing the rest of this season.

    1. I believe the consensus has been that the org does not want to “embarrass” him by benching him after all he has done for the city. Not sure if anyone has actually come out and said that directly, but I have heard that is the mentality from different sources in the media.

  9. Jim-

your game summaries are fantastic and I really appreciate the work you do in providing this information to everyone everyday! This is an exciting time for those of us looking forward to the next wave arriving at the Bank, although there are times one feels like one is living in an alternate universe. As an example Dylan Cozens hitting .291 and Jose Pujols .284 – what?

  10. Not sure how close Asche is to coming back…but Id like to see Perkins get a crack over Lough and need somebody in AAA push Burris out…keep tinkering..and relax on TJ…he will get more abs

    1. Wish I could say I was looking forward to having Asche back. No position, little power, doesn’t hit for average or OBP. Seems like a good guy.

Anybody have an update on Altherr?

  11. Fine outing from Eflin today. 7 shutout innings, 2 hits, 7Ks, 1bb, season era 2.36; only concern is deep counts – 64 strikes, 42 balls.

    1. He has definitely earned the next promotion if they decide Eickhoff or Morgan need to rework some things in AAA. I really want to see him, Thompson and Lively in Philly by the end of September

    2. 8mark…normally with a good share of Ks, you can have more pitches along with more two-strike foul balls….however today Eflin only induced 4 two-strike fouls and only one base on ball, so not sure why the higher pitch count
Nevertheless, his Game Score of 78 is one of the highest of the season.

      1. Yeah I’m not complaining or concerned. He did run quite a few 3-2 counts. VV threw over 100 in 5 innings yesterday. Must be in the water.

    1. Roccom how about Goeddel 401 ft Hr on a 95 Fb . See if they play the young guys they produce. It should be play Howard twice a wk or a Against really hard righties.TJ 4 or 5 times a wk, Mack has to release the beast.

  12. Who cares about the 1.1 pick, just keep hitting on the rule 5 guys. Goeddel hitting .325 in May….
Good thing TJ didn’t play today so we could watch The BigUgh go 0fer again.
