Our first look at the progression (or lack thereof) of the outfielders around the system. Next up will be corner infielders, over the weekend.
Lehigh Valley
Clete Thomas, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .262/.389/369 in 103 AB’s; 1HR 10RBI; 8/9 SB; 16%bb/24% k rates; .300 vs. LHP; .247 vs. RHP; .217 with RISP. 29 games in the OF with 3 assists and 3 errors; Thomas has played well, providing much of what was expected when he was signed by the Phils as a 6th or 7th OF.
Leandro Castro, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2006; .188/.287/.275 in 80 AB’s; 1HR 9RBI; 1/3 SB; 11%bb/17%k rates; .074 vs. LHP; .245 vs. RHP; .250 with RISP. 23 games in the OF with 3 assists and 3 errors ; Castro’s low walk rate and high strikeout rate have been his historical problem and that has corrected itself this year, however, he has done little else.
Tyler Henson, 26, Re-signed as free agent in 2014; .299/.349/.494 in 77 AB’s; 2HR 12 RBI; 4/5 SB; 7%bb/30% k rates; .296 vs. LHP; .300 vs. RHP; .292 with RISP. 18 games in the OF without an error; 1 assist; 5 games at 2B without an error; 1 game at 3B without an error; Henson has hit very well, although with a high strikeout rate. Henson has shown versatility, some power, and some speed and is hitting for average. Gotta admit, I like him a little bit.
STeve Susdorf, 28, Phils 19th round pick in 2008 draft; .254/.316/.296 in 71 AB’s; 0HR 4RBI; 2/2 SB; 9%bb/22% k rates. 8 games in the OF without an error; Susdorf has been adequate playing part time thus far. I expect more from him as the year progresses.
Tyson Gillies, 25, Acquired from Seattle in 2010; .196/.258/.286 in 58 AB’s between Clearwater and Lehigh Valley; 1HR 3RBI; 2/3 SB; 3%bb/29% k rates. 14 games in the OF with 1 error. Just awful on many levels.
Reading
Zach Collier, 23, Phils 1st round pick in 2008; .177/.301/.258 in 61 AB’s; 0HR 2RBI; 2/4 SB; 11%bb/31% k rates. 18 games in the OF with one assist and one error; Awful and overmatched.
Kelly Dugan, 23, Phils 2nd round pick in 2009; .275/.396/.375 in 40 AB’s; 1HR 5RBI; 1SB; 15%bb/18% k rates. 12 games in the OF with 1 error; Has been unable to stay on the field thus far and hasn’t had enough AB’s to pass judgement.
Anthony Hewitt, 25, Phils 1st round pick in 2007; .151/.148/.151 in 51 AB’s; 0HR 6RBI; 2/2SB; 0%bb/42%k rates. 11 games in the OF with 3 errors; Last seasons optimism has been quickly tempered by the above stat line, albeit with few AB’s.
Cameron Perkins, 23, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .376/.422/.564 in 101 AB’s; 2HR 16RBI; 3/5 SB; 6%bb/14%k rates; .368 vs. LHP, .381 vs. RHP; .429 with RISP. 20 games in the OF without an error and 1 OF assist; 6 games at 1B with one error (.980); Hard to criticize the above stat line however the lack of power and speed will inhibit Perkins from becoming a major league regular. That said, plenty to be excited about.
Aaron Altherr, 23, Phils 9th round pick in 2009; .240/.326/.440 in 75 AB’s between Reading and CLearwater; 2HR 10RBI; 2/2SB; 11%bb/16%K rates. 19 games in the OF with 3 assists and 2 errors; Nice to see the walk rate going up and ALtherr has shown glimpses of real promise after a late start due to a bad wrist.
Clearwater
Nick Ferdinand, 24, Phils 35th round pick in 2013; .151/.211/.245 in 53 AB’s; 1HR 5 RBI; 5%bb/25%k rates. 12 games in the OF with 2 errors and 2 assists; What can u really say….
Peter Lavin, 26, Phils 20th round pick in 2011 ; .277/.327/.455 in 101 AB’s; 3HR 13RBI; 1/4 SB; 7%bb/21% k rates; .268 vs. LHP; .283 vs. RHP; .333 with RISP; 24 games in the OF with 5 assists and no errors. One of the lone bright spots in the CLearwater lineup, but should be as a 26 year old in High A.
Brian Pointer, 22, Phils 28th round pick in 2010; .185/.280/.321 in 81 AB’s; 1HR 2RBI; 2/3 SB; 11%bb/22% k rates; 18 games in the OF without an error and 2 assists; Continued disappointment.
Justin Parr, 23, Phils 8th round pick in 2013; .118/.163/.132 in 76 AB’s; 0HR 3RBI; 0SB; 3%bb/25%k rates. 19 games in the OF with 1 assist and 2 errors; Pure ugly.
Lakewood
Dylan Cozens, 19, Phils 2nd round pick in 2012 ; .267/.297/.442 in 120 AB’s; 3HR 16RBI; 4/4SB; 5%bb/27% k rates; .269 vs. LHP; .286 vs. RHP; .278 with RISP. 26 games in the OF with 2 OF assists and 3 errors; Nice progression. Needs to work on getting his bat on the ball.
Larry Greene, 21, Phils 1st round pick in 2011; .167/.237/.241 in 56 AB’s; 0HR 5RBI; 2/2SB; 7%bb/28%k rates. Greene is on the DL with a significant wrist issue. Before he went on the DL, it was less than pretty.
Samuel Hiciano, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .267/.336/.455 in 101 AB’s; 3HR 13RBI; 1/4SB; 7%bb/22%k rates; .250 vs. LHP; .272 vs. RHP; .276 with RISP. 17 games in the OF with 2 assists and 1 error. Hiciano flies under the radar screen with the other names in the Lakewood OF, but has performed as good as anyone.
Carlos Tocci, 18, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .270/.311/.342 in 111 AB’s; 0HR 8RBI; 1/3 SB; 3%bb/24%k rates; .333 vs. LHP; .256 vs. RHP; .208 with RISP; 28 games in the OF; 3 OF assists, 2 errors; Marked improvement by Tocci albeit at the same level as last year. The low walk rate is a concern. Continues to play excellent defense.
Jiandido Tromp, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2011; 0 for 12 thus far with 7 strikeouts.
Realistically, Altherr is your only potential 1st division starter until you get to lakewood group.

Henson should be considered to replace Mayberry or Nix.

Tromp disappoints me…a few years ago I had envisioned him to be someone to watch who could blossom into a special player. I thought he had all the tools, but alas disappointment abounds.

He has had 15 PAs this year, he will play the entire season at 20 years old, what is inspiring this melodramatic proclamation. There are still tools to like, he has strong hands, can play a good CF, he has some speed, and some power potential. He isn’t a top prospect, but declaring it over for a guy this early doesn’t make sense.

So, next time you need a spot on the 40-man, who do you cut, Gillies or Collier? Comparable numbers, but Collier is sucking while repeating a lower level. (Gillies always hit pretty well at Reading.) But Gillies is a little older. I say that, plus the repeated discipline infractions, makes him more expendable. But it’s a bad problem to have–two CF prospects who are hitting below .200, and this problem dates back to last year, Collier has nearly 600 ABs at AA and shows no signs of figuring it out.
Depressing.

Honestly – I would like to see both of them go.

And honestly, Hewitt, too. Id rather give their at bats to anyone else. Im tired of hoping on them..
Also, Id rather keep the 40 man spots open for “flexibility”.

Who are the guys still in XST? Any reports on them? I wonder if they can take a spot at CLW or maybe push one of the LKW guys up (though Id worry about mucking up their progress)
