Rule 5 Draft Preview – 40 Man Roster Decisions

Each December at the Winter Meetings is the Rule 5 draft, the draft was created in order to provide a path to the major leagues for players in deep systems that would otherwise be blocked.  To be eligible for the Rule 5 draft a player must:

  • Not be on a 40 man roster
  • Have been in the minor leagues for at least 4 years if he was signed at or after age 19
  • Have been in the minor leagues for at least 5 years if he was signed at or before age 18

The main point of interest here is which prospects will receive a 40 man roster spot in order to be protected in the draft.  Two of the most controversial players Tyler Cloyd and Darin Ruf received spots on the 40 man roster has part of their September call-ups and are thus exempt from the draft.  The Phillies have until November 20 to submit a 40 man roster to the commissioner’s office of those that are to be protected. 10-29-2013 AFL Update

Zach Collier is really hitting well out there in AZ.  3 multi-hit games out of his last 5, and really bruising some right-handed pitching.  And Tommy Joseph back in action after a week off with the flu, as was first reported (I think) by Jay Floyd over at

Anyway, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Darin Ruf is killing him some baseballs.  His ISO is .500 (in a SSS of 50 ABs).  Even still…killing baseballs.  Continue reading 10-29-2013 AFL Update

General Discussion – Week of October 29 – End of Season Moves Edition

Here is your weekly general discussion for all those things not covered by other content here.  With the World Series nearing an end the Hot Stove is starting to heat up, so let the rumors fly.  Plenty of Phillies are in Winter League (I believe the Darin Ruf 2012 HR count is at 48 as of Sunday night); in the Arizona Fall League, Tommy Joseph and Cody Asche were named to the Rising Stars Game which is a cross between the Futures Game and a minor league All-Star game.

For those in the Northeast stay safe from the storm and post away while the lights stay on.

Phillies Moves:

Exercised 2013 Option on Carlos Ruiz ($5 million)

Declined 2013 Option on Ty Wigginton ($500k buyout)

Declined 2013 Option on Jose Contreras ($500k buyout)

Declined 2013 Option on Placido Polanco ($1mil buyout)

Addition by Subtraction

My two cents….the Phillies have made their 40 man roster stronger by outrighting both P David Herndon, as well as utility infielder Michael Martinez off the 40 man today. Herndon was subsequently picked up by Toronto.  With a number of difficult decisions upcoming over the next several weeks prior to the Rule 5 draft, this clears necessary space for some of the bigger prospect names to be added into the mix in the short term.

10-22-2013 AFL Update

About 2 weeks into the AFL season now.  Of note is Kyle Simon’s nice outing yesterday.  Looks like he’ll be used as a starter every fifth day.  Will be interesting to see how the league handles him (or the top of the league’s lineups, anyway), when they get to see him a second time around in the same game. He was not great with the Baltimore org as a starter in 2012, and was thriving as a reliever in Reading.

Anyway, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Looks like a handful more guys are playing than were last time I checked.  Lisalverto Bonilla is back in action, which is a good thing.  Unfortunately, I am pretty sure Domingo Santana is not Phils property, despite being on that website. BA’s 2012 Draft Report Card (with added scouting reports)

Today Baseball America released their Draft Report card for the 2012 draft (article can be read here  BA has put out some awards with a short blip, I have added some more information to each profile:

BA’s Quick Take:

Despite forfeiting their first-round pick by signing Jonathan Papelbon, the Phillies added a pair of promising high school pitchers with supplemental picks they got for losing Raul Ibanez and Ryan Madson.

Best Pure Hitter:

Andrew Pullin (OF/2B) – Pullin was the Phillies 5th round pick, an outfielder in high school the Phillies are moving him to second base.  Pullin’s hitting style is unorthodox but he keeps his hands in the zone and has the ability to spray line drives all over the field.

Cameron Perkins (1B/3B/OF) – Perkins drafted out of Purdue in the 6th round.  Perkins has a good feel for hitting and a fast bat, he proved throughout his college career that he can make good contact.

10-18-2013 AFL Update

More than a week into the AFL season, and Cody Ashce continues to rake.  It’s like he’s back in Clearwater with those numbers.

Anyway, here’s a link to all the stat lines for all of the Phils minor leaguers in off-season leagues.  Good place to go check in on Freddy Galvis and Darin Ruf and Tyson Gillies, among others.  Just ignore Justin Friend’s 27.00 ERA.  Give him a full year, and it’ll come down to 0.27.  Trust me.

Also of note, the AFL guys have new photos.  Which means one important thing: Kyle Simon’s mustache. Continue reading 10-18-2013 AFL Update

General Discussion – Week of 10-15-2012

Here’s a fresh general discussion for everyone.  I know there’s not much going on other than AFL and the MLB Playoffs, so go ahead and talk about, I don’t know, apples and oranges.  Are they mentioned in the same breath so often that now they’re grouped together, perhaps devaluing the notion of “apples and oranges”.

Or you could talk about baseball.  MLB playoffs I guess.

10-12-2013 AFL Update

After a couple games, you can see that all of the Phillies prospects have played.  Cody Asche had a nice game in there.  Kyle Simon didn’t really have a great one last night.  Which is a mild understatement.  Come to think of it, calling that a mild understatement is a mild understatement.  And so forth.
