  1. mattair is moved back up to clearwater i see. the new signee Steve Singleton plays 3rd for the blueclaws. I like reintroducing travis to high A since he has been hitting better, but im not so sure i like replacing him with what looks like organizational filler. There has got to be one of the college guys in Williamsport looking decent enough to play for lakewood. I would like to see someone bump up and then challenge Valenzuela with the crosscutters to end the season.

    1. Franco would be pretty young for Lakewood and has struggled recently, which would make H-Mart a candidate to give low-A a try. Martinez is getting in a groove and I suppose the organization doesn’t want to mess with that, but it would be interesting to see what he could do at Lakewood.

  2. Nice to see Biddle stringing together a couple of good starts – 6 IP, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K. And J-Rod was dealing – 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K! If only he could add some velocity…

Singleton goes yard and Galvis keeps chugging along with two hits, one for extra bases.

  3. J. Singleton’s homer was all that Julio Rodriguez needed tonight. It looks like he is back on track. Because he has pitched many innings successfully in the Winter League in Puerto Rico and is doing well in A, would the Phillies consider moving him to Reading to finish the year? He is definitely our most experienced “Baby Ace” in spite of his youth.
I wonder if Barnes will be moved to Reading now that Mattair is back in Clearwater. Franco’s slump had ruled out moving him at this time.
Duran and Alvarez came through well tonight in the walkoff win. Alvarez is steadily growing into the job in low-A, but he is not the prospect he was at the end of last year.
Savery helped LHV come back in their game. His was a huge hold. He is proving quite valuable in his new role. It was good to see DeFratus pitch a solid ninth for the save. We may see him in Philly this September, depending on whathappens at the trade deadline.
Nice work by the Gulf Coast Phillies to come back today. Solid relief by Durham and Davis, a homer by Duffy, and a three run single by Lavin. How did Solarte get from first to home on a single?
    Good night in the minors.

    1. Julio seems to get no repect from Philly beat writers—-rarely ever mentioned, if at all, with the four other baby aces. Just cannot understand that.

      Like

      1. Because the beat reporters talk to the scouts, and the scouts don’t see him as a top prospect. They don’t see his stuff as effective against major league hitting. The scouts may or may not be be wrong, but that’s pretty clearly what’s going on.

      2. Seems to me that it is the velocity issue. JRod can throw harder in relief, so I think he will ultimately project as a reliever. From reading this site, we all know that relievers do not get the props that starters get, and this is justifiable in most cases.

        1. Interesting Tweet from Trevor May regarding JRods repetoire:

“he throws high 80s topping out at about 91 usually, but he has the Mariano effect. Cutter everytime coupled with a 70 mph curve.”

  4. Nice hits for Valenzuela in the GCL tonight.
Ugly, ugly game for Kleven. Good to see Dugan with a double and on base again with the HBP, and Martinez is going nicely.
Not sure why the Phils moved Steve Singleton all the way down to A-ball. Maybe they see him as tomorrow’s Paco Figueroa/Kevin Frandsen. Like Duran’s line from Lakewood and Santana’s two hits. Good K numbers from Biddle; excessively wild with the 3 BB/HBP/WP but the Ks and more groundouts than flyouts are encouraging.
Home run (Jon) Singleton! And good to see Mattair get a hit in his Clearwater return. Sweet line for J-Rod.
Happy about Galvis’s double and other hit; they need to coach him more on baserunning though.
Overbeck with the Ks again. Good to see scoreless innings for Savery and DeFratus though.

    1. I’ll bet the odds are pretty high that Hamels and Halladay would both have more wins than JRod if they were in A ball.

  5. Tough night for the Cutters in a brutal, and I mean brutally hot game in Auburn. First pitch was 97 degrees (probably 110 in the press box, but that’s another story haha)…I knew it was going to be a long night when the thermometer was higher than the radar gun for much of the early goings.

Kleven was pretty shaky, as his line score shows. He never looked totally comfortable out there, as he struggled with his command and tempo. Definitely a different guy than the one who fired seven shutout innings last Saturday. Seemed to be behind almost every batter on a 3-0 or 3-1 count. He was about 91-93 with the fastball all night…changeup came in around 80, and his slider somewhere in the mid-to-high seventies. Worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam two different times…gave up the two long home runs and was mercifully lifted with two outs in the fifth inning in favor of Campbell.

For the bats it was another frustrating night of not putting a string of good hits together. Dugan and Franco did crack back-to-back doubles off a AAA-Syracuse pitcher who started the game on a rehab performance, so that was an encouraging sign. Asche is really looking befuddled at the plate on a pretty consistent basis…looks like he’s behind almost every fastball and is swinging too early on the off-speed stuff. Taylor Black returned after missing three games and finished 2 for 4 and looked fine in the field. That’s about all I can think of for now!

  6. So, why did they release Patrick Murray, really? Looks so far like Stassi was simply inserted into the 1B spot, so far, so that was the plan? Morandini give any info on Radio interviews about reasons for the ascension of Stassi? Did they give thought to playing Witer in RF and Dugan to 1B, or the adding of Big Duffy from GCL?

    Like

      1. If you take Singleton out of the equation, Murray was relatively the same age or younger as any other 1B they have. And .240 might be higher than some hit. Last time I looked Big Duffy was not hitting that much. I guess by that standard, Big Duffy will soon be jettisoned also. But, that wasn’t really the question, the question was, what was the true inside story of the Murray release, and why did the Cutters decide to elevate Brock Stassi as opposed to other options as the initial move to realign the alignment and Batting order.
, allowing they may try further combinations, but what reason did they give for starting with Brock Stassi?

        Like

        1. Well I can tell you that the release of Murray was pretty much a shock to everyone…he was one of the main leaders on the team and was very well-loved in the clubhouse. If curious, check out a feature story I did on him a couple weeks ago: http://bit.ly/rjyrZy

Anyways, he DID sort-of hint to me several times that he was happy to still be around, because understood that he was much older than the average prospect for his league. So I think some of the writing was on the wall there.

As far as replacing him, I think they would like to see if they have something in Stassi, but I would also expect Dugan to get more time there at 1B so they can work in Unda and Jimenez, who have both shown flashes here and there of being able producers.

  9. Put up with the heat and poor Eastern League scheduling which forced the R-Phils to get into town at 6:30 in the morning from Manchester NH and watched them then sleep walk through an 11-1 shellacking at the hands of the B-Mets. With the wind which always blows out in Reading the Mets took six balls deep. But Derrick Mitchell did show off some of his non hitting tools: He drew a two out walk to load the bases to get on base for his 21st straight game but was forced at second to end the inning. Later his leap just missed bringing back a high fly home run ball over the center field wall and on another play he threw a one hop strike to the plate on a ground ball single to center to just miss throwing out a runner. It was just that kind of night.

    1. So now we are hyping up Derrick Mitchell drawing a walk, ALMOST (ALMOST!!!!!) robbing a HR, and ALMOST (ALMOST!!!!!) throwing a runner out at the plate?

This is getting as bad as the Matt Rizzotti love last year.

Don’t get me wrong, I want every Phillies prospect to succeed, but the Rizzotti stuff last year, and the Mitchell stuff this year gets old quick.

I heard Biddle almost struck another guy out last night but the umpire called the pitch a ball. And Cesar Hernandez almost hit a double, but the CF made a running catch. And Sebastian Valle almost threw a baserunner out at 2B, but the guy slid in under the tag. And Freddy Galvis almost made a diving play at SS but just couldnt get there. Oh and Singleton almost hit another HR but it died at the warning track.

      Isn’t this exercise fun?

      1. Please give a modicum of respect to people who come on here and present their first hand impressions of players. It means a lot to those of us who don’t see these players ever. There is something to be said for a player who shows some baseball ability during the game, but it does not show up in the box score.

      “7. LHP – Jesse Biddle (LWD-10/22/91) – (5-6, 3.10) – 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 4 K’s”
