    1. How about a little half-full scenarios?

Edgar Duran is 7 for 15 in his last 4 games. He hasn’t had an error in 11 straight games. I this the SS in the distant future?

Altherr has hit in 7 of his last 9. He’s above the Mendoza line. He’s also 8 for 8 in SBs.

Geo Mendez has a triple slash of .299/.359/.439. He’s cooled down a bit recently because I’m sure opposing teams know about him now. He doesn’t K often and he draws the BBs. In 2009 in the DSL, he had 52 BBs to 29 Ks. He’s continued to show discipline. The 21 year old is listed at 6’2″ 170 but I’m sure those were from when he signed or at least when he hit the States. He’s a guy to keep an eye on. Could be some projection in that frame.

Carlos Perdomo is hitting .424 in his last 10 games. He has 3 Ks and 3 BBs in 17 games. He could be playing at CLW if it weren’t for Cesar Hernandez and the old guy Utley.

There’s a could of guys. admittedly they are in A ball but Lakewood is the worst performing minor league affiliate for the Phils. Except for Altherr, they are all under the radar — except to us Phuture Phillie Phanatics.

  2. Zagurski pitching real well at LHV. The way Romero is pitching for the Phils we may need him with the big club.

    1. He keeps getting chances and failing. It’s odd how dominant he can seem in the minors, and how awful he’s been in the majors.

      Like

        1. Because its not that he’s not doing as well, its that he’s not doing even close to as well. He goes from domination to crap. Its a bigger dropoff than you would expect, but he’s not the only guy it happens to. Look at Brandon Wood.

  3. He showed flashes of brilliance in the pros. At one point last season he threw seven scoreless innings, struck out two batters and was 0-2 against the third, before allowing three runs and getting promptly demoted. I’d feel just as confident with Zagurski- he’s ready to step in should Romero faulter.

  4. Young players have to fight the lack of faith in them by Philly’s management. e.g. Happ etc. Older players can stink the place up but a slip by a prospect and its dog house time.
Let us see what happens in CF today. MM might get a chance but I doubt it.

    1. I wonder if the Phillies’ lack of faith in Happ is what’s holding him back in Houston.

      Like

      1. Okay Happ has had two really bad games in May but not much run support.
That was nothing to do with it. That lack of faith begot Garcia and Eaton and put had with Russell(the destoryer) as his manager.
What happen in Houston stay in Houston with the idiot GM

        Like

        1. Yeah, they’re idiots. I recall a genius here that said Happ was a number 2 pitcher, but the front office didn’t know any better.

        2. nowheels, your thesis is BS on many levels (for one, and I could go on for pages, what do mistaken FA signings have to do with the failure of prospects? Your thesis that somehow the failure of some prospects represents … a critique of the front office, as opposed to a vindication of their ability to evaluate prospects – is interesting to say the least).

I really thought you had grown out of that phase of your commenting career, but whatever. On Happ specifically: he has pitched 118 innings with Houston over 2 years, with an ERA of 4.40 & lousy peripherals to match. And you’re conclusion is that … wait, I’m still not clear … his performance somehow proves that both the Houston and Phillies front office suck? Wait, what?

Happ is almost precisely what the Phillies’ brain trust thought – a 4th/5th starter. Who, fortunately for the Phillies, depending upon how you look at it, either pitched over his head, or was extraordinarily lucky, for his rookie season.

  5. Probably Mayberry today in CF but it was nice to see MM finally contribute something offensively. When you start looking at the long term CF options if Shane were to be out for a while, it really speaks to how critical he is to this team both defensively and offensively.

And a random comment – how freaking great is Polanco at 3B? He is really playing gold glove caliber defense.

  6. Zagurski really lacks command. Even having produced in AAA he’s still walked six batters in nine innings. It doesn’t translate well to the bigs.

  7. Got to Lakewood for the first time last night. Claypool pitched really well other than giving up a huge homer to Harper (he K’d Harper twice before the homer). I think he topped out around 91, threw in the high 80s for most of the game, breaking ball was in the mid-high 70s, low 80s. Hewitt looked like absolute garbage in his 4 K’s (swinging at pitches at his neck, swinging when the ball was pretty much in the catcher’s glove), though he did play well in the OF and seems to have some range out there. Perdomo could be someone to watch out for as he looks to swing a good bat and him (along with Duran) made some nice plays in the field.

I do know they have some of the worst fans I have ever seen in all the parks I’ve been to. Kids acting like a bunch of spoiled brats (I’ve never heard 10 year olds drop F-bombs like I heard here), and just a lot of rude people there (shhhh, mostly Yankee fans were there).

Sorry the report is all over the place, just going as much from what I could remember.

    1. I go to a bunch of Blueclaws games every year- I don’t know what it was about that game, but that was a really annoying crowd. Maybe it was something about the cliental for ‘bark in the park’ or the draw for Harper. The kids behind me were screaming the whole time, the guys behind me contantly talking in loud voices, the kid in front of me getting into fights with his sister over the dog, and the guy next to me who chatted me up the whole game. All that required having to yell at each other to hear a conversation.

Lakewood games are never like that.

      1. And even if he hadn’t … the idea that you would “give up” on a player like Biddle after 7 starts … is crazy. It would be crazy even if he had legitimately been pitching horribly, which he has not (Ks are almost one per IP, HR allowed low, and he has been pitching better overall lately).

Someone a couple days ago posted that the readership here has been getting more knowledgeable. I basically agreed, but there are obviously still some gaps. Over reliance on small sample sizes (see also the recent Francisco hate for this) is one of the biggest blind spots people have around here. Of course it is even worse when evaluating young kids who are still developing/learning.

        Like

        1. Daily box scores almost require looking at small sample sizes. I think most understand small sample sizes but with prospects it is even more difficult because their ‘baseline’ could be changing.
For example, Savery has basically no history, so what is there to evaluate? Correct approach would be to just wait to comment but what fun is that?

          Like

          1. Well first of all, I was responding specifically to “who has lost hope on biddle,” which is almost a parody of relying too much on small sample size combined with not appreciating that prospects don’t always follow a smooth/straight line path to major league sucess.

More generally, there is a world of difference between (for example) “wow, I’m really impressed with Valle’s performance lately,” and “Valle’s performance in the past 2 weeks proves that he should be promoted to AA.” (And we have all seen many worse examples of the latter.) It’s possible to appreciate performances over a short period of time without drawing irrrational conclusions from same.

            Like

          2. And as for the Savery example, that is really a perfect example of what I mean. By all means, comment away. I think it’s great that he’s playings so well – certainly a great story. But to conclude from his performance that he is all of the sudden a serious prospect (except perhaps as a backup, and even that is a long shot) – well that’s just silly.

Of course we all have different ideas of “fun” I guess. Some people I guess have fun pretending that 4-6 weeks of fairly solid hitting (with of course serious limitations as well, including lack of power and plate discipline) turns someone into a serious prospect. It’s not my idea of fun, obviously. Fun for me is (a) appreciating the performance of ALL the minor leaguers, without necessarily pretending that it always means much in terms of eventual big league success, while (b) identifying the REAL prospects.

    1. He pitched well except for one bad inning. And even in that inning, most hits were ground ball singles. I think he’s doing very well for his first year out of HS.

  9. If Victorino goes on DL, would Rich Thompson come up? He plays CF well, walks a lot, steals bases a lot, hits okay but with no power. Hopefully Vcitorino is okay, but if not, Brown may miss another shot because of his thumb injury.

    1. I was at Saturday’s game when Harper went against Claypool. He K’d the first 2 times, then his third AB, he absolutely crushed the ball over the LF fence that cleared by a good 50 feet. It was one of those sounds off the bat that you knew was going out as soon as he hit it. Kid has a great swing and seems to have a great attitude on the field.

      Like

  10. Strangely enough it has been reported that Harper had a serious vision problem. That solved he went on a streak.

  11. Aumont and DeFratus both pitched in the game yesterday. Aumont threw one scoreless, while DeFratus gave up a run. Aumont has out-pitched DeFratus by a significant margin so far this year. Aumont has a K/BB of 23/4, while DeFratus has a K/BB of 18/10. Going into last nights game, Aumont had a FIP of 2.01, while DeFratus’ was 2.94. In fact, Aumont’s FIP through 17 innings this year, is lower than DeFratus FIP at Reading last year (20 innings).
Considering Aumont is younger than DeFratus(and has more potential ML pitches) if performance continues this way, he should be considered a much better prospect than DeFratus next year.

    Like

    1. Agreed. I think most people acknowledged that Aumont had a higher ceiling than De Fratus, even in the offseason. It was just about who seemed more likely to put it all together and reach the majors.

  12. Brown has shown an inability to stay on the field lately. He had the quad last year, the hamate and now the thumb. In the paper today it said that this could slow his arrival to the major leagues. This is a shame because of how good he is. But ever since he signed I don’t think he has a major problem staying on the field. The quad and the thumb are minor injuries. His power seems to still be there in spite of the hamate. Did anyone hear Ricky Bo criticize Brown during the broadcast of the Clearwater game? The same stuff about the hands too high and not being able to reach the inside pitch. Maybe we should cut Brown. Ricky Bo acts like his career is over and he was a total bust.

  13. Pretty tough year at clearwater for some of the phillies top prospects this year, cosart has been very average at best, colvin has been hurt, may has atleast looked much better the last few starts, james doesn’t look very promising at all at the plate, and singleton is striking out at a hewitt rate with minimal power, hopefully valle will be back in the lineup soon he was on fire

    Like

    1. They are still 10 games over .500 though. Castro, Rodriguez, and Valle all have played well. Barnes has been a plus and Ruf and Mattair have produced. Last year Colvin’s ERA was over 8 and May was walking a small island nation. Plenty of time for the prospects to turn it around.

    2. I’m not really worried about Singleton. He’s 19 with a .390 OBP in A+. He remains a very promising prospect and is performing well in my book.

Cosart at least had a Cosart-like start tonight. Here’s hoping he keeps it up.

      Like

  14. Cosart perfect after 5 innings. Low pitch count. Mid to high 90’s fastball. Throwing curve and change for strikes. per Bradenton webcast.

    1. Rickey, again, you are awesome – telling us just want we want to know.

A guy whose FB sits at 96 in the 6th and can throw a decent breaking ball has some big time talent.

  15. Cosarts perfecto has ended with a lead off lined single up the middle in the bottom of the 7th just out of the reach of Hanzawa.

  16. Nice 87 pitch, 7 inning , one hit, shutout for Cosart. Friend will try to get a two inning save to preserve the 1-0 lead.

    1. See all we need is people to say Cosart is not pitching well and he throws a 1 hitter. Friend with 14 saves already. Wonder what the Phillies minor league record is for a single season?

  17. Brian Gordon took a no-hitter into the sixth today as well. Little else to report on from a prospect perspective in Allentown. Dom Brown is still out but he was coaching on the first base line.

I did see one of the greatest fielding plays I have EVER seen though. Ron Belliard lifted a long fly to center field. Center fielder Matt Angle reached over the fence, got a glove on the ball which deflected into the glove of LF Tyler Henson. It actually looked like a clean catch from my vantage but the umpire ruled it a double.

    Like

    1. I thought that play was a catch as well. I was in GA for the game in front of the bar, so from my vantage point, it looked like a catch.

Gordon has pitched great in both starts I have seen him in, too bad the pen had to blow it for him today.

Bocock made a real dumb running mistake today that easily cost the Pigs a run and would’ve put them up 2-1 at the time. Ground ball to the pitcher with only 0 or 1 out and your on 3rd, you shouldn’t be sprinting home with the ball 5 feet from you.

Overall I went to Lakewood and the Pigs this weekend and they scored a combined 1 run. Not good.
