He does pitch, but it looks like he’s out of the closers role at LHV. Maybe Gregg can provide some more insight.
In looking at his numbers, it looks like he’s struggling, but that also is probably due to the fact that he’s learning a new pitch (splitter), and the brass has probably also told him not to rely so much on his fastball. They’re probably trying to let him throw these other pitches in less stressful situations.
Things that stick out to me “plays every position well except hitter” I think James made that comment early on about Pete Orr and I think I’m starting to see why. After a hot start he is cooling off.
Why hasn’t Martinez drawn the benefit of at least one start? Heck you Rule 5 the kid and opt to keep him I would have thought he’d be in the mix at 2b. If Utley makes it back is he the odd man out.
And finally what to do with the RIZZ he just keeps hitting.

Philly.com has a series of articles on the Phillies Latin American presence. Some pretty good articles. Here is a link to all the articles for those interested.
LVIP- Frandsen plays at 1B, Barfield 2B, Bocock SS, Belliard 3B, Young in LF, Larish DNP. Yesterday Barfield sat out. Since Bocock’s return, looks like they may be setting up for a future realignment of personnel. Barfield, Belliard, and Young have not hit much of late.
RDG- have not tried Overbeck in LF as yet, hope that move comes off.
CLW- Gump still hitting above the average, Barnes seems to be on since promotion, Cesar Hernandez might be starting to hit more.
LKW- Mendez DH’ing lately with Batts taking 3rd, M. Alvarez looks like he could start to hit more- seems playing ahead of Collier last couple of days. Perdomo starting to hit lately, looking for possibility of Duran injury, if not- Perdomo-Duran-Schoenberger might form 2B-SS-3B semi-prospect bordering on prospect alignment, and the DH’ing of Mendez creates a suspicion they might be working on his defense in down time for a replacement of Murphy at 1B. The OF is , for now, Santana-Altherr-Hewitt, with Alvarez and Collier maybe manning DH later on after the other moves .. Several of these players , if they don’t pick up, may go to Williamsport when their season starts up.
Took advantage of the 10:35 a.m. midweek start Tuesday to place the “Gone Baseball Watching” sign on my office door and check out the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs against the Buffalo Bisons. The Pigs won 3-2 to remain above .500 on the year.
A small disclaimer. I realize that Lehigh Valley is not exactly prospect-laden. Nevertheless, the Pigs are the Phils Triple A affiliate and the roster includes a few players – Dom Brown, utility infielders and middle relievers — who might find themselves in Philadelphia at some point this season.
My impressions on the day:
We’ll start with Dominic Brown, who started in right and hit third. Against starter Pat Misch, a control lefty with 73 major league appearances (24 starts), Brown seemed overmatched. His three at-bats: a groundout to first, a swinging strikeout and a groundout to second. He did double in the 8th against major league veteran Taylor Tankersly, but that was on a blooper to short right that second baseman Jonathan Malo had trouble handing.
Righthander Jason Grilli came in to pitch the 7th and 8th and continued his strong performance. Gave up three hits in two innings, but was never in trouble. Brown helped him in the 7th with a hit stealing diving putout. Hit 90 on the scoreboard radar with his heater. I liked how he went after hitters. He seemed confident in his stuff and I believe he’d do just fine in Philadelphia, if given the opportunity. His best pitch looked to be a changeup that froze Mets top prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis to end the 7th.
Lefty Mike Zagurski came in to close the game. He extended his Triple A scoreless streak to 13.2 innings, but I was far from impressed. His control was awful (only 10 strikes on 21 pitches). By this point in his career, I expect better from Zagurski. I’m sure the big club sees something in Zagurski that they like, but I am pretty skeptical he will ever amount to more than a 4-A pitcher.
Kevin Frandsen – who had been playing shortstop most of the year – started at first with Brian Bocock back with the club. Made me believe that the Phillies see him as a possible super utility player if Pete Orr or Wilson Valdez were to falter or get hurt. Despite an 0-for-4 day, Frandsen is still hitting over.300 (.302).
Delwyn Young, who had such a great spring training and almost made the big club, slapped two hits including a second inning 2-run homer. His batting average is still .184, but maybe (just maybe) he may move past the Mendoza line with more strong outings.
Lefty Ryan Feierabend threw his longest outing of the year – six innings. Scattered six hits and gave up two runs. Struck out six and walked two on 92 pitches. His fastball topped out in the mid to high 80s. As a former high draft pick by Seattle (third round in 2003), Feierabend must be a known quantity to two members of the Phillies front office – advisor Pat Gillick (former Mariner GM) and Assistant GM Benny Looper (former VP of development in Seattle). He may be just Triple A filler now, but maybe once he rounds into form could emerge as someone more meaningful. He had Tommy John surgery, which forced him to miss the 2009 season.
Catcher Joel Naughton made his first start of the year and first appearance in Triple A. Seeing that he never played in Double A, I am wondering if Naughton may be joining Sebastian Valle and Tuffy Gosewisch as Phils minor league catchers with a solid shot at making the big leagues. I WAS disappointed to see that hot-swinging Erik Kratz had the day off. I was mildly surprised that Dane Sardinha – and not Kratz – earned the call to Philadelphia when Carlos Ruiz’ back flared up.
An off speed throwing lefty will always be the toughest guy to hit for a lefty that swings hard. Howard still can’t hit those guys well although he’s certainly improved. Brown will sit against those types of guys initially anyway. For what its worth, Mayberry can’t hit the right handed off- speed guys. Thanks to Hamels’ complete game, the Phils probably won’t activate JC until Ruiz is feeling better in a few more days so they can just drop Dane then.
Great to see Cosart improving and lasting 6 innings although he still walked 3 and threw 2 WPs. Cesar with 2 hits was nice to see and Gump may play himself up to Reading if he keeps it up. Overbeck will be playing LF in this weekend’s series against Harrisburg, a NL farm team (so no DH). If he does well, I wonder if they’d consider leaving him there and promoting Savery. I’m sure its been discussed although it seems pretty drastic.
The most notable part of Brown’s day was a great diving catch in right field that allowed the ‘Pigs to double off a Buffalo runner. Frandsen made a great play as well, catching an errant throw by third baseman Ron Belliard and tagging the runner on his way down.
Brown hasn’t had many plate appearances. Between ST, Clearwater and LHV he’s had what, 46 at bats all season? For all intents he’s still in Spring Training.
Naughton started as Kratz had just started Monday, and teams generally do not want to use the same catcher on a day game after a night game. I think Naughton is a fill-in more than anything.
Thr more people say he is overmatched really is worring me. this guy shoulnt be overmatched, most who see him hav the same opion on him. how is he a top 50 prospect.
Give him some time. As a poster said above he is basically still in spring training as far as timing goes. If he’s still looking overmatched in a few weeks then you can start worrying a little bit.
I believe he cut off a ball that might’ve gone to the gap.
As far as Naughton, from frequently watching AAA baseball I’ve grown accustomed to certain utility minor leaguers. Players who shuffle from affiliation to affiliation based on the needs of the organization. Orlando Guevara was such a player for several years. He rarely played, but the Phillies would send him wherever they needed to fill a spot. They had to send someone to AAA to fill in for Sardinha, and they may not have wanted to disrupt Tuffy Gosewisch in Reading just to be a backup (and sending a player from AA creates another hole you have to fill there). If they bring a player up to be the starter that’s another story. But a backup usually doesn’t mean much.
As far as Grilli, he’s kind of generic to me. I didn’t leave with any kind of real impression about him. Certainly could likely pitch out of a Major League bullpen. But he never really excelled even at his best in the majors.
Does anybody know whether Overbeck ever played the OF anywhere from HS through now?
He was moved to 1b supposedly because he couldn’t handle 3rd base. Does he have an iron glove? Does he have at least average speed, enough to move in the outfield better than Burrell, etc.? Youth wants to know.
For now he looks like the best (only?) power righty hitter in our system. A specialty gem for a starving system.
To start in LF this coming weekend? They must be working him out hard out there.
Good luck; it would be a minor miracle to have him adapt well…and, dreaming he said, have that kind of threat in LF instead of the likes of Raul’s recent bat.
