The last of the End of the Year reports, which takes a look at the bullpen in the bottom half of the organization.
Lakewood
Justin Beal, 24, 24 games, 3-4 with a 2.77 ERA; 39IP 44H 15BB 24K, 1HR allowed, 1.77 GO/AO, .303 opp. avg., .333 vs. LH, .270 vs. RH, .171 with RISP, 1.51 WHIP. ALthough a nice ERA, Beal was hit fairly hard this year, but with limited damage thanks to effectiveness with RISP. Beal was the Phils 28th round pick in 2009, and probably should be in CLearwater to sink or swim.
Williamsport
Brad Blanks, 25, 15 games, 4-1 with a 2.73 ERA, 33IP 25H 15BB 25K, 0.92 GO/AO, .214 opp. avg., .174 with RISP, .264 vs. RH, .172 vs. RH, 1.21 WHIP. Blanks pitched well, as he should as a 25 year old in the Short Season League.
Lisalberto Bonilla, 20, GCL: 6 games (all starts), 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA; 32.1 IP, 32H 5BB 38K, 1.67 GO/AO, .246 opp. avg. 1.14 WHIP. Williamsport: 10 games (3 starts); 1-3 with a 6.49 ERA; 26,1 IP 33H 12BB 18K, 5 HR allowed, 1.27 GO/AO, .308 opp. avg., 1.71 WHIP. Bonilla looked very good in the GCL and not so good in the NYPL. Look for a full season in the NYPL for Bonilla in 2011.
Jacob Borup, 23, 16 games (4 starts), 2-1 with a 2.68 ERA; 2 saves, 47IP 37H 13BB 34K, 2HR allowed, 1.74 GO/AO, .215 opp. avg., .192 vs. LH, .232 vs. RH, .279 with RISP, 1.06 WHIP. Borup, the Phils 23rd round selection in the 2010 draft threw very well for Williamsport after starting 15 games for Arizona State this season. I expect him in the Lakewood rotation in 2011.
Garrett CLaypool, 22, 12 games (4 starts), 3-3 with a 3.18 ERA; 34IP 28H 16BB 45K, 1 HR allowed, 0.56 GO/AO, .231 opp. avg., .270 vs. LH, .190 vs. RH, .237 with RISP. Claypool, the Phils 11th round pick this year, threw effectively after pitching very well for UCLA this collegiate season. He was predominately a starter for UCLA, and will be in Lakewood, presumably in their rotation in 2011.
Craig Fritsch, 22, 16 games (7 starts), 2-0 with a 4.38 ERA; 37IP 31H 33BB 35K, 0HR allowed, 0.65 GO/AO, .223 opp. avg., .237 vs. LH, ,.206 vs. RH, .255 with RISP. 1.73 WHIP. Fritsch started off very strong and then struggled down the stretch, specifically with his control, finally ending the year on the DL. Fritsch was the Phils 16th round pick this year, and threw both as a starter and reliever at Baylor. If healthy, he should be in Lakewood in 2011.
Juary Gomez, 20, 21 games, 0-0 with a 0.60 ERA; 30IP 17H 7BB 30K,9 saves, 1.48 GO/AO; .165 opp. avg. Gomez’s stats were almost entirely in the GCL, but he was completely dominant this season. I could see him in Lakewood to start 2011, with a step back to Williamsport if he struggles at all. He was signed as a free agent in 2008.
Chase Johnson, 22, 27 games, 1-2 with a 2.79 ERA, 15 saves, 29IP 22H 16BB 32K, 2 HR allowed, 1.50 GO/AO, .212 opp. avg., .179 vs. LH, .231 vs. RH, .174 with RISP. Johnson, the Phils 21st round pick this year pitched very well, earning NYPL All Star honors. He needs to work on his command, but probably will be doing so in Lakewood in 2011.
Mike McGuire, 24, 18 games, 1-1 with a 2.67 ERA; 6 saves, 30.1 IP 27H 7BB 35K, 2HR allowed, 2.29 GO/AO, .233 opp. avg., .190 vs. LH, .257 vs. RH, .152 with RISP, 1.12 WHIP. McGuire was brought in during July and pitched very well, well enough to earn an instructional league invite, indicating the Phils have some interest in bringing him back. Originally the Indians 43rd round pick in the 2008 draft, the local product (Drexel Hill native, U of Delaware) gives us some local rooting interest.
Tyler Knigge, 21, 11 games (4 starts), 0-4 with a 5.28 ERA; 30.2 IP 28H 14BB 27K, 4HR allowed, 1.54 GO/AO, .241 opp. avg. All of his stats other than one game were accrued in the GCL. A relatively high pick (12th round) out of Lewis and Clark University this year, he likely will be in Williamsport next year.
Suilman Lebron, 23, 19 games between Lakewood and WIlliamsport; 1-3 with a 5.44 ERA; 43IP 54H 10BB 43K, 5 HR allowed, 1.58 GO/AO, .303 opp. avg. A rough season for Lebron, who was signed as a free agent back in 2006. He may be getting his last shot next year.
Bryan Morgado, 21, 14 games, 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA; 16.1 IP 11H 22BB 21K, 1.15 GO/AO, .190 opp. avg., .250 vs. LH, .167 vs. RH, .286 with RISP, 2.02 WHIP. The Phils saw something in Morgado who was their 4th round pick this year. He was practically unhittable, however there was really no need to swing the bat as he gave up 1.34 BB per inning. Morgado was primarily a starter at the University of Tennesee, but accrued similar stars this year for the Vols, going 2-7 with a 7.90 ERA in 15 games (13 starts). Morgado should be back in Williamsport in 2011.
Julian Sampson, 21, 21 games, 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA; 38IP 49H 9BB 41K; .314 opp. avg., 1.52 WHIP, .324 vs. LH, .307 vs. RH, .373 with RISP. Believe it or not Sampson is still just 21, and still struggling at the low levels of the minors. A 12th round, high bonus pick in the 2007 draft, Sampson steadily moved backwards after a good year in Lakewood in 2008. I guess Sampson comes back to Lakewood in 2011, but it may be time for the Phils to cut their losses, at least a little bit.
Juan Sosa, 20, 24 games, 3-2 with a 2.08 ERA, 6 saves, 47.2 IP 37H 17BB 41K, 0.75 GO/AO, .213 opp. avg., .234 vs. LH, .196 vs. RH, .143 with RISP. 1.13 WHIP. Signed as a free agent in 2007, Sosa looked excellent for Williamsport and certainly deserves a promotion. He will be entering his 5th season in the system and the Phils may push the soon to be 21 year old to Clearwater for 2011.
GCL
Tim Brown, 23, 7 games (2 starts), 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA; 1 save, 24IP, 22H 3BB 18K, 1.53 GO/AO, .250 opp. avg., .273 vs. LH, .236 vs. RH, .176 with RISP, 1.04 WHIP.
Neal Davis, 22, 3 games, 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA, 4IP 6H 3BB 4K. A 36th Round pick in the 2010 draft out of UVA, Davis had a disappointing 2010. I would think he gets a shot in Williamsport in 2011 to sink or swim.
Orlando Garces, 20, 15 games, 3-2 with a 4.13 ERA; 28.1 IP 30H 20BB 28K, 2 HR allowed, .130 GO/AO, .263 opp. avg., .314 vs. LH, .241 vs. RH, .238 with RISP. Garces was signed as a free agent and played in the States for the first time this season. 2011: Williamsport.
Lino Martinez, 19, 11 games (3 starts), 2-2 with a 4.93 ERA; 34.2 IP 43H 9BB 30K, 1.06 GO/AO, .294 opp. avg., .226 vs. LH, .313 vs. RH, .327 with RISP, 1.50 WHIP. No reason to rush the 19 year old. 2011: Extended Spring, then GCL.
Michael Nesseth, 22, The Phils 17th round draft pick this year spent the balance of the season the DL after signing. Look for the University of Nebraska product in Williamsport if healthy next year.
Jesus Pirela, 21, 17 games (2 starts), 4-2 with a 5.18 ERA between GCL and WIlliamsport. 40IP 35H 25BB 38K, 1.29 GO/AO, .232 opp. avg., 1 HR allowed. Pirela was signed as a free agent in 2006 and spent three seasons in the Venezuelan Summer League before his stateside debut this year. Has good stuff but needs work on his control. 2011: Williamsport
Andrew Snowdon, 24, 7 games, 0-1 with a 0.93 ERA; 9.2 IP 7H 1BB 10K, 1.25 GO/AO, .200 opp. avg.
Kevin Walter, 18, The Phils 18th round pick this year was a late signee and threw in one game for the GCL Phils. Walter has three above average pitches and is a draftee with good potential. As of now, Walter projects as a starter.
I think Sampson raised his stock in the bullpen. The ERA was still high but his peripheral numbers took a huge leap forward. Now it’s a matter simply of giving up too many hits. He throws 90-91, I see some promise there yet.

If Lugo can put up a sub-3.00 ERA next year in CLW we could be looking at a nice bullpen piece in a couple years.

Serious error! How about this guy?:
Eric Pettis…reliever at Wmsprt: W-8 -L-0 59IP 43H 7BB (!) 67K (!) 1.37 ERA
.204BAA 7SV
Like to see him “tested” at Clwtr FSL in ’11.
To be determined during ’11 ST. This guy could get on a fast track; a college pitcher.
Excelsior!

Pettis was covered under starters (bottom half). He was used as a reliever in the last half of the season to cut down on innings.

Must say that if a guy is pitching out of the bullpen exclusively in Low-A ball and below their chances of ever seeing the majors leagues is very limited. Most future Major League bullpen guys typically begin as starters in the minors until they show they don’t have the secondary pitches to fill that role.
I think the ages for many of these players support the conclusion that they are there to fill a role more than they are prospects.

3Up, I think that is substantially correct. I looked at the top 15 relievers in terms of WAR this season. Of those 15, 11 started their careers as starting pitchers. The four who started as relievers are Joakim Soria, Brian Wilson, Chris Perez and Heath Bell. So its not to say that full time relievers won’t make it, but these guys are usually in the bullpen for a reason.

Alan,
thanks for the backup research.
Only caveat I should have made was to make an exception for college relievers who are drafted specifically because the team plans for them to be fast-tracked to the majors. Think that Wilson and Perez fit that mold.

I agree with the theory that low A relievers have a long way to go to get to the majors. Most of these guys are probably filler but there are usually a couple that get themselves noticed. Lugo still has a chance for me.

Yeah 3up, that’s another observation I noticed. Of those four relievers, three were fast-tracked to the majors. The only one who really worked up the system slowly was Heath Bell.

For the 2010 draftees just getting innings, either starter or bullpen, is really the main goal so the Front Office can get a better evaluation on them. Placements for next season can be discussed and then review during Spring Training.
Agree that Lugo seems like the ‘best’ prospect of the bunch on stats/age/level.
