Lehigh Valley closer Scott Mathieson, along with starters Nate Robertson and Vance Worley have all been called up to Philadelphia and are expected in Philadelphia on Sunday according to Jeff Schuler of the Morning Call.
Both Robertson (who had been scheduled to start Sunday in Lehigh Valley) and Worley (who was removed after one inning yesterday in his start yesterday vs. Buffalo) remain in the mix to start on Monday. The Phils will need to make a move to free up space on the 40 man roster for Robertson, presumably moving Jamie Moyer from the 15 to the 60 day DL.
Mathieson who has been working extensively with Hall of Fame Closer Bruce Sutter over the last 10 days on a split finger fastball leaves Lehigh Valley having set the club record for saves in a season with 26.
Excited to see Worley and Mathieson pitch….Robertson…eh…maybe he can give a scouting report when we play the Marlins

I am very happy about this. We needed some extra arms tomorrow in case evil KK shows up early in the game. Glad the Phillies realized that they needed some call ups for tomorrow.

I’m a fan of Worley and Mathieson. I’m hoping they see some action and do real well, we’ll probably have Mathieson in the bullpen next season. At the same time I’m wondering who we can grab in the Rule 5 next season!

I’ll be rooting for Scott, he deserves a bit of good luck and success..

A solid month with Scott would put him in the mix for the bullpen next year. He also could be in the mix for the playoffs if they use him to replace Herndon or Baez (injury replacement)

Evil KK . Like in Dr Kyle and Mr. Kendrick. I have to admit there is excitement again.

What is scary is that Kyle can get to 10 wins before Cole…ok back to minor league talk…going to the game today…would like to see a big lead for the Phils and Mathieson come in to close it out 1-2-3.

Can you learn a splitter in ten days? Be cool if Matthieson actually throws it in a game. But I’m not holding my breath.

I wouldn’t expect to see much of either of the two pitchers in meaningful games. I think they are planning a potential Worley/Robertson tandem for the double header, should whomever starts gets an early hook. As for Mathieson, I doubt he’ll see any leveraged situations. The bullpen has pitched real well of late and he won’t see the field ahead of any of the current bullpen guys, Herndon included. The way the starters are eating innings, only in a blowout would I expect to see Mathieson get in a game. He definitely won’t see the field in innings 6-9.

If Vance Worley pitches well don’t be surprised if he gets another start after that. Kendrick is absolutely pathetic and does not deserve to be starting on any major league team, no less the two-time defending NL Champions. It wouldn’t both me a bit if Worley somehow replaced him as I know Worley has better stuff and it’s only a matter of time before he is clearly better than KK.

I have also seen enough of Kyle Kendrick. It is like pulling teeth watching him pitch.

wow ! catch I’m not a KK apologist at all but I think you way over state how bad he has been. If you take out the 1st 2 starts I believe he is 9-6 with a 4.25ish ERA. I know that there are probably some he shouldn’t have won but with a little luck (he left w/ a lead at least 4 times that I can remember) he could be 13-6 with a 4.25ish era. Granted he would be one of the worst pitchers to ever have that kind of season but give the guy some credit. I think he is also plus 1o wins give or take for his career. I think he’s fine for a 5 on a championship caliber team and would be at least a 4 on a cellar dwellar. Of course 5’s can be upgraded and worley may be just that. Point is that KK isn’t killing us and I’ve seen worse 5’s. Remember when robert person was our ace and later jon lieber ugh!

So much for “Mathieson will definitely not pitch in innings 6-9” or “only in a blowout”. After watching him pitch today, you can see why the front office has been worried about his command on secondary pitches. On a positive note, Bastardo and Herndon are looking more and more comfortable each time out.

Do you think Bastardo and Herndon will start the season with the Phillies next year? I mean, either the Phillies finally go out and sign some big money bullpen help, or they pull heavily from their farm system for new relievers.

After watching Mathieson pitch today, if he can’t master a secondary pitch I don’t see them keeping him on the forty man. His stuff was flat, up in the zone and very hittable. Looks like the difference between AAA and the majors is a lot for some guys.
I think with the budget already allotted for next season, Bastardo and Herndon will likely be part of the major league pen. I was pretty sure Herndon would be in AAA to start next season, but he’s gotten better as the season has progressed. And Mathieson looks awful. In fact, I see them making at least reasonable/low offers to Durbin and Romero for next season as well.

Well, a few things on KK. I really don’t hate the guy, but he has developed a very bad habit of coming up small when the team really needs him. Furthermore, he’s such a marginal pitcher if you actually spend the time to watch what he’s doing out there. He’s not very good and, if somebody comes along who may be better, then, by all means, they should give that other person a chance. I cannot possibly imagine KK being the number 5 guy next year by design. He may become that due to injuries and other circumstances, but I can’t see them intending to run him out there every fifth day. It’s just doggone painful to watch.

On Bastardo and Herndon. Bastardo has potentially dominating major league stuff – he just needs to get comfortable in the majors. He should be on the major league roster from day one next year. Herndon may or may not be with the big team – it depends how well he progresses mastering off-speed stuff and learning the nuances of setting up hitters. Even if he’s sent down, however, I suspect it would probably only be for a few months.

Kendrick is, however, one of the few pitchers I would send to Bruce Sutter because he’s not going to have a long major league career with his current assortment of pitches. I also might consider moving Kendrick to long relief. He actually looked okay last year in limited relief time. His FB was between 90-94, which, with the sinking action, is a lot better than the 87-91 you typically see with him.

Bastardo looked impressive today, he should be able to make the pen next year. I don’t know what the Phils want to do with Herndon, starter or reliever? Mathieson looked terrible. He was wild, and then he started to groove some pitches and got hit around. It’s a miracle he didn’t give up any runs.

Re. Herndon – My hope is that they send him to AAA next year to develop his secondary pitches. He would play really well at CBP as a starter with that heavy sinker if he could add another decent pitch or two to his arsenal.
Re. Matthieson – I watched him today. I’ve only seen his tiny major league sample this season, so my question to those who have seen him more at AAA: does he consistently have trouble keeping the ball down in the zone? He sure did today.

Mathieson’s secondary pitch was the only thing getting over..the strikeout was on a slider…his fastball was 94-98 but it seems he is pressing and over throwing. I want to see a few more appearances before writing him off.

Re: Mathieson, totally agree its just one outing, too soon to judge but his two outings this year at this level have been bad.
Re: the Phils pen – as bad as the phils have been at developing relievers from within, they’ve been equally as good in my opinion at finding talent from other orgs (buying low) – Durbin has been a great find, Contreras, Park, Eyre, and Romero.
I suspect they will reserve two or three spots for young arms next year, fill three with Lidge, Baez, and Madson, and find one or two arms from outside the org, like they did the names above.
If they feel they need to spend more, I could see them moving Blanton and using some of that $8M on a reliever or two, and a few low base salary, high incentive starter types to fill the #4 spot.

Yes, Mathieson did get in today, but it was partly desperation. Double header tomorrow, felt like it was almost a necessity. When you use for pitchers in seven innings, combined with how much the other guys had been used and in a deficit situation, they had few options. I highly don’t using him was a show of confidence, rather out was an unfortunate circumstance.

I think the Baez thing would limit FA relievers who demand more than they are willing to eat if things go bad.
