Paul Hoover Gets the Call

Just a quick note that Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that Catcher Paul Hoover will be getting the call up to the bigs tomorrow when rosters expand.  Hoover, 34, spent some time in Philly earlier this year with the injuries to Ruiz/Schneider.  He was hitting .247/.326/.345 in 255 AB’s with Lehigh Valley to go along with 2 HR and 21 RBI’s.  In his 18 at bats with the Phillies earlier this year, Hoover hit .278.  As you would expect, Hoover will see little, if any action, but gives the Phillies flexibility to use Ruiz/Schneider late in the game if needed.

More callups to come…

  1. Greg, did you mean “Hoover will see little, if no action?” You wrote Schneider. Sorry if it sounds like I’m picking.

It’s nice to have 3 catchers for sure. Anxiously waiting to see who gets the start on Monday.

  2. Give the Monday start to Worley. Despite his ML inexperience, I can’t see him being any less effective than Robinson or Carpenter and may surprise.

  3. I’m guessing Dobbs will get the call when the come home on Friday and I do hope Worley gets the call as well. Rather see him then Robertson or Carpenter

  4. Robertson, Dobbs and Tracy are all making their cases for call-up. Robertson threw 6 innings of 3 Hit ball with 5 Ks. Dobbs has awoken/ In his last 4 games, Dobbs is 8 / 15 with 2 HRs and 8 RBIs. Throw in a Dbl and 3 BBs and a SB and you have a nice set.
Tracy, in his last 5 games, is 9/18 with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs. He also has 3BBs.

None of them are on the 40 man roster but there is a spot or two on it.

  5. Bellman, yes it’s great to see them all doing well. To add to your list, Thompson has stolen 5 bases in the last 5 games (>50% of the time he’s been on base)……………able to steal even when everybody expects him to be going, and is hitting .300 over the last 10 games. He’s on track for another 40 steal season.

  6. Would like to see Worley, Mathieson, Zagurski, & Dobbs all get called up as well. Zagurski/Mathieson give you a couple more arms that you can match up out of the pen. Although I’m not sure if Charlie would actually use either of them.

  7. I wonder if Tuffy will ever get the call – the guy couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat, but from all accounts is a great receiver. In other words, the perfect Organizational Catcher ™.

  8. Good to see Hoover on the way. Catcher is the one position that has worried me most this season as far as reasonable depth. More pitching? Sure, what team does not have that need, but both roster catchers have had DL time and Hoover is a good stop gap just like Exxon. Is he the answer? No more than Exxon, but it is nice to know that, if needed, it will not be a sucking chest wound either.
