August 25th Discussion

Short on time and resources today, but wanted to open a new post to discuss anything on your mind with regard to Phillies prospects. I didn’t even have time to look at last night’s box scores, if there were any. If someone wants to edit this post with box scores, that would be fantastic. Thanks

  2. I’m still intrigued by Overbeck. Hit his 21st HR of the season last night. Struggled a bit on the promotion to AA but has improved each month. That 2008 draft really was nice (excluding Hewitt). Gose already traded for Oswalt, Knapp traded for Cliff Lee but May, Pettibone, Worley, Schwimer, Overbeck, JRod, Cosart still in the Top 30 2 years later and still promise for Cisco, Rosenberg, Collier, Stutes.

  3. Squire, I would not say Overbeck has improved each month as you have said. He came up and did horrible, he started to warm power and contact but went right to ice cold again, it seems now he is just hitting for power mainly. Too many K’s for my liking.

  4. It seems like he goes 1-4 with 2 or 3 ks each night, but he has been able to keep his power numbers up there, although what he did in Clearwater was obviously at the expense of less advanced pithcers….I would be shocked if he became anything more than a AAAA player.

  5. Any body have a scouting report on the 3rd base ump(Scott Barry) from last nights game in Philly? This Scott Barry has been getting solid negative reviews so far in the majors!!!

  6. Seems like he’ll never be more than and AAAA umpire at best. Needs work on his attitude and demeanor.

  7. if jeremy barnes hits like this next year does anyone think he could end up in reading by the end of the 2011 season?

Because of age considerations and his success in Lakewood, Barnes could START 2011 in Reading.

  9. Kevin Angelle was named the Player of the Week for the Grand Prairie Air Hogs in the Northern League.

  10. Lino Martinez, the 300K signee last year, has been very solid in the GCL thus far, coming in with a FIP of 3.33. Nice K and BB rates and just some bad luck in balls in play. Only 6ft but still very young and lefthanded. Hopefully can grow a few inches in the next few years.

  11. Will, thanks for posting that analysis from the game that I was at (it was actually on Sunday, August 15th. It confirms that I was not hallucinating when I saw that Julio Rodriquez was topping out at 93/94 and was often over 90, at least on that day.

But hey that’s life… particularly that’s “sport’s life” where the more regarded/invested players get more chances than the guys that a team thinks less of.

I really agree A LOT with that Lakewood recap where the person said the Phillies seem to overvalue their overage pitchers. When you see a 23/24 year old guy pitching great at Lakewood or Clearwater or a 20/21 year old pitcher dominating the GCL. It isn’t as impressive as a pitcher age appropriate(or younger) for a league when he’s pitching almost lights out. Rodriguez this year has probably been top-5 in pitching performances for actually age/experience appropriate pitchers in the farm system.

  13. Barnes was having good year last year then he got hurt…having another strong year. I think is up to where Garcia starts. If Garcia goes to Lehigh Valley then Barnes will start at Reading.

I agree – however, I don’t know where the comment “the Phillies seem to overvalue their overage pitchers” is coming from. You need a mix of older, experienced guys along with young, high-potential guys throughout your system. Phils have plenty of both. How are the overvaluing the former to the detriment of the latter?

  15. ^Well just to give my opinion on how they’re doing it at Lakewood. I thought during the course of the season they were giving older pitchers who should probably be either in relief (since I think they will eventually have to be MLB relievers) or moved up in the system starts in place of younger pitchers who are age appropriate for the league and should be getting starts.

I realize Shreve was started off in the pen because he hadn’t pitched in 2 years, but then once he did start to get a chance to start after an injury in the rotation and showed he should have been left in the rotation, he was moved back to the pen. I think they should have been more aggressive then and moved up Matt Way to create a spot for a young SP who should get some innings. It didn’t matter because then both Pettibone and Hernandez would go down and Shreve would become a permanent member of the rotation.

More recently there’s Julio Rodriguez. He hasn’t thrown many innings this year and I think it would serve him and Lakewood better if he was a starter in the rotation… But the Phillies have kept Zeid(23) in the rotation over Rodriguez. With Zeid’s age he should be in Clearwater already as he’ll be 24 next season. Maybe they plan to double-jump him to Reading, but I think he’s taking away innings from Julio Rodriguez currently.

  16. Fly, I agree with most of what you say, but I don’t consider using older pitchers at lower levels to be over valuing them. I consider it the opposite. I think it under values them, showing maybe the organization doesn’t think much of them. Likes of Aumont and Colvin get aggressive starting assignments while likes of Zeid and Hyatt get lower assignments. This tells me who they truly value, the ones getting the aggressive assignments.

  17. Hyatt with a win tonight and 9ks….that gives him 12 wins and over 170ks…I know he is not the top pitching prospect but does he get pitcher of the year? Hey if Zagurski won it why not Hyatt.

  18. I think the Lakewood manager has mentioned many guys on the team as potential MVPs. Pretty sure there was an article about Castro being an MVP type. Hopefully, James can continue learning how to hit and walk since his speed and arm are likely going to be valuable in the field.

I do not think age is as important for pitchers getting to the majors. If Zeid is a good pitcher and moves up a level at a time and becomes a 4th starter at age 27, does that really hurt the Phillies? I agree the key is not to let those marginal guys impact innings for the top prospects. However, the younger the arm the more careful Phils should be in overworking it.

  19. I’m not sure I totally agree with the point made, except with regards to Julio Rodriguez. The Phillies like to develop some relievers by pitching them as starters and that’s okay. But with Rodriguez, he’s really gotten the short end of the stick for some reason.

  20. Re: Overbeck, he had decent numbers in July (.250/.322/.435 for an OPS of .757) after an awful June (.149/.259/.213 for an OPS of .472) and has good numbers for August (.296/.367/.535 for an OPS of .902).
To me, his most troublesome aspect as a prospect is the fact that he’s been awful in the field for Reading. His stats will never be good enough, even at his ceiling, to justify him being a butcher in the field. Likely Quad-A player, but decent to have in the system considering the black hole of third base prospects. Do they have anyone at all at this position, besides maybe Barnes (arguably a second base/utility prospect and maybe Overbeck (arguably not a prospect)?

  21. “Not to rag on Barnes, but as a prospect he is kind of old at 24 for Low A ball.” technically he is 23 which is still old for A ball so if Barnes is at all a prospect i think that he should start in AA to see what he can do.

  22. Rizzotti has had a sprained thumb for a few weeks now… LeHigh kept playing him when they should not have. They have finally decided over the past few games to let the thumb rest/heal.

Maikel Franco, played almost the entire season at age 17. Held his own, for a guy that young, in a foreign country, IMO.
Turns 18 today. Happy birthday young man.
