Recap: Lakewood went 2-5 on the week, losing a few games late, although the starting pitching also wasn’t as strong as it has been. The highlights of the week were Trevor May’s 12-strikeout no-walk performance and a two-HR game from Jiwan James. The ‘Claws are now 32-23 in the second half, 74-51 overall, and remain in first place in the SAL North with 14 games remaining in the regular season.
Hitters:
- Michael Dabbs: 8-18, 2B, RBI, 5 K / 0 BB, 3 SB
- Jonathan Singleton: 6-21, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 3 K / 4 BB, SB
- Jiwan James: 4-21, 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 9 K / 2 BB
- Jeremy Barnes: 7-20, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 5 K / 3 BB
- Alan Schoenberger: 3-18, 2B, 8 K / 0 BB
- Leandro Castro: 4-30, 2B, 2 RBI, 7 K / 3 BB, SB / 3 CS
- Sebastian Valle: 7-28, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, 4 K / BB, SB
- Anthony Hewitt: 1-15, 5 K / 0 BB
Notes: James’ two-homer game on Thursday included a game-tying inside-the-parker in the 8th inning (the ‘Claws would go on to lose in 10)…Ryan Howard broke up a no-hitter in the 6th inning on Friday night and became Lakewood’s all-time RBI leader with 92 (Travis Mattair and Randy Ruiz each had 91)…he also became the first ‘Claw to have his number retired
Pitchers:
- Brody Colvin: 2 IP, 6 H, ER, 2 K / 0 BB
- Jonathan Pettibone: 13.1 IP, 11 H, 3 ER, 10 K / 1 BB
- Colby Shreve: 4 IP, 8 H, 5 ER, 0 K / 1 BB
- Josh Zeid: 6.2 IP, 11 H, 4 ER, 4 K / 0 BB
- Luke Wertz: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3 K / 1 BB
- Ebelin Lugo: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 6 K / 2 BB
- Trevor May: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 12 K / 0 BB
- Julio Rodriguez: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 6 K / 3 BB
Notes: Colvin left his start after facing one batter in the third inning after getting hit on the leg by a groundball. Doesn’t sound like anyone is overly concerned, but I haven’t seen an update on whether he’ll make his next start…Pettibone had his best start of the year on Saturday (8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 8 K / 0 BB)
Good to see Singleton picking it up a bit. Would like to see him in FIL to work out any swing, pitch recognition, or plate discipline issues–and regain his confidence at the plate. He benefitted from the teaching situation in XST, so maybe FIL will reset him again. I am expecting a very good year from him next year at Clearwater. Either a solid full year or lighting it up early and maybe a mid- or late-season promo to Reading. The latter not as likely as the former, IMO.

More on Singleton: This year, we have to give him a pass on his struggles a bit because he had a lot of extra pressure due to the league homing in on him and pitching him like a Ryan Howard rehab. That’s really tough on a 19-yr-old. Then it’s his first full season, and the mental wear and tear are the hardest. Just about the time the league starts pitching around him and taxing his patience, he might be running out of gas mentally. I assume he worked super hard in ST and XST to get locked in like he was.
That said, it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to adversity. My guess is he picks it up next year again as a stud hitter and learns to be more patient when the FSL starts pitching around him.

Singleton turns 19 in the middle of September.
His OPS is still 8th in the Sally league, and all the guys ahead of him are much older.

Is it too early to say that Hewitt was a worse first round pick than Jeff Jackson? At least he was sucking in Reading by 21.

I see Dabbs had a descent week, especially playing hurt. We were told he had inflamation in his left wrist. He was having trouble turning on inside pitches. What are the chances he gets promoted to Clearwater next year?

So the SAL pitchers adjusted to Singleton after his amazing start, and then he’s had to adjust to theirs.
He has done that and will continue to make necessary changes/improvements on the way up.
He is very likely the #1 prospect among position players in the league. All of this in his first full pro season. He has remained in the lineup from his entry until now. This has to be an exhausting season of full time play with only missing a game or two, etc.
After the SAL ends he certainly will spend time in the instructional lg to get him ready for Clwtr in ’11. I expect him to continue his climb as a prospective star player/hitter/slugger who could go to Reading in ’12.
I see nothing lacking in his game that he could not conquer. We just have to get used to the idea of having a 1st baseman honing in on that ML position by ’13.
Jumping way ahead, does Howard have a no-trade clause?
Also slated for that
’13 team are several superior starters among whom a couple could also be introduced to Philly then…along with Valle (?)…etc.
Good tidings.

This Lakewood team is even more stocked than last year’s Champions. If the entire team can move up one level a year 2013 will be quite interesting.

In the first 3 months of the season, it seemed like Lakewood would win the close games and pull out a lot of late game victories. Now that trend is reversing a bit. It seems to correspond, as you’d expect, with the limiting starters to 5 innings or so. It puts a lot of pressure on the bullpen guys. some of those have been used extensively. Lugo and Wertz both have around 60 innings in 35 outings or more. They both have sub-2 ERAs for the year but are over 3 in the last 10 games. It’s the nature of minor league baseball. Starters are slowed down but relievers are trotted out more often and for longer outings.

Have to give the nod to Jackson simply because he with the 4th overall pick in the draft that year.

Agreed… and that Frank Thomas was chosen in the next couple of picks. The next time you see him will be in Cooperstown.

On Dabbs–batting average and speed may keep him around for a bit, but he’s really just organizational filler unless he manages to add some power and increase his walk rate, and at 24 entering spring training next year, not sure how likely that is. Seems like a good bet to bounce back and forth between Lakewood and Clearwater next year as roster needs dictate, but progress by GCL and Williamsport guys behind him could really push him for a spot in the organization.
