‘Pigs Weekend Update

A look at the ‘Pigs weekend with a few notes, transactions and probables attached at the end.

Friday–About as rare as a solar eclipse, the ‘Pigs won in both extra innings and by one run in their 7-6 victory over Pawtucket on Friday evening closing out their road trip. In what was their second biggest comeback in team history (5 runs), Lehigh Valley received excellent pitching out of the bullpen to keep them in the game and allow the victory in the 10th inning when none other than Dane Sardinha scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error. After a rough outing by starter Brian Mazone (4IP 6R,4ER), the combination of Gordon, Zagurski and Villarreal pitched 6 scoreless with Oscar Villarreal (3-3) picking up the win in relief. The ‘Pigs down 5-0 going into the 5th, scored 4 runs in the 5th to put them back in the ballgame with a two run double by Brian Bocock and an RBI single by Rich Thompson the big blows.  Bocock led the team offensively going 2-2 with a double, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases, and 3 RBI’s.

Saturday–A pitchers duel in Allentown on Saturday evening with Andrew Carpenter throwing well for the first time in about a month as he went 6.2 innings give up a lone run (on a Jose Morales solo homer) on 6 hits.  He walked 2 and struck out seven and left the game in the 7th with Lehigh Valley behind by a run.  A three run eighth featuring a great slide by Rich Thompson that scored the tying run and RBI singles by Cody Ransom and Neil Sellers gave the ‘Pigs a 3-1 lead going to the 9th.  Scott Mathieson earned his 24th save of the year, striking out the side, but not before loading the bases on two hits and a walk in a bumpy 9th.  Antonio Bastardo (1-1)picked up the win in relief of Carpenter, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings and getting Carpenter out of a 7th inning jam.

Sunday–With Brandon Duckworth and Nate Bump on the DL, back into the rotation went Joe Savery (1-11) and he had a good outing last 6 innings, and yielding just 2 runs on 7 hits in the 3-1 Lehigh Valley loss. He walked one and struck out three. All the damage off of Savery came in the third inning when Rochester scored two runs on four singles and a sac fly.  The ‘Pigs managed a run in the 7th on a Melvin Dorta but Rochester scored an insurance run in the 8th off of Mike Zagurski to put the game away. Andy Tracy had a big night at the plate for Lehigh Valley with 3 hits, including a double.

Notes: Matt Rizzotti was out of the lineup on Friday and Saturday with a wrist problem. He was back in the lineup on Sunday and went 0-2 with a strikeout.  He average is at .209 thus far with Lehigh Valley.

Greg Dobbs went 0-7 over the weekend, dropping his average as an IronPig to .083.

–Weird stat of the day–After losing their first 17 Friday games, Lehigh Valley won their first Friday game of the year this past Friday.

–In his last 6 plate appearances with the bases loaded, Brian Bocock is 4-5 with a walk and 12 RBI.  Impressive.

Cody Ransom has hit in his last 9 games (11-32, .344)

–The ‘Pigs bullpen has allowed just 1 run in their last 13.1 IP.

–While seeing extremely limited playing time since coming off the DL close to a month ago, Melvin Dorta is hitting .344 in the 18 games Dave Huppert has played him in.

Scott Mathieson has earned a save in each of his last 4 appearances, and is unscored upon in his last 5 games.

Mike Stutes has stranded each inherited runner since his callup to AAA (9).

Transactions: With Greg Dobbs accepting his assignment to Lehigh Valley, the ‘Pigs were forced to make a roster move and the name on the chopping block was that of Chris Aguila.  The Phillies organization actually traded for Aguila mid season which necessitated a roster re-shuffling that sent Rich Thompson to Reading.  Aguila was awful in Allentown hitting .200 with no power and no speed.  Worse than his hitting was his fielding. The release of Aguila was a no brainer at this stage.

Probables: Monday: Taubenheim; Tuesday: Worley, Wednesday: Mazone.

  1. Nice work, must be tough doing writeups on such a lackluster team. I do look forward to boxscores when Worley is pitching. I wonder if he will get any innings with the big club in sept?

  2. I could see Worley getting some innings in an extreme blowout situation, or that fun “October 3rd and the game doesn’t matter at all” game.

  3. I can see Worley starting one of the double header games against Florida in early September. If not him, then who?

  4. Pigs can’t catch a break; they were even cheated out of having Ryan Howard for a game or two when Gload went on the DL. The main interest right now is which players will be brought up to the big club at the end of the season? Candidates: Bastardo, Mathieson, Zagurski, Worley, Carpenter, Dobbs, Mayberry, Hoover or Sardinha, Ransom. Long shots: Thompson (pinch runner), Duckworth. Rizzotti isn’t hitting right now for whatever reason, so I don’t think it will be him.

  5. My thoughts: It will be Hoover, Mayberry, Bastardo, Mathieson, Worley, either Dobbs or Tracy, Worley, outside shot for Thompson.

Duckworth has been on the DL, Sardinha has been awful as of late, and Rizzottti is banged up.
