Another 1-2 weekend in the books. See below for the details, along with a few notes.
Friday–Lehigh Valley began a road trip in Rochester with a 5-1 loss on Friday evening. It was fairly smooth sailing for starter Vance Worley (0-2), who had given up just a lone run until the 7th, when he left the game after giving up an RBI single to Eric Lis. Oscar Villarreal entered and immediately(first pitch) gave up a three run homer, allowing two of Worley’s inherited runners to score, giving Rochester an insurmountable 3 run lead. Worley’s line was 6.1IP 5H 4ER 1BB 7K. The only Lehigh Valley run came in the 4th when a Cody Ransom sac fly scored John Mayberry who had doubled. It was a big night for Mayberry who went 3-4. Matt Rizzotti chipped in with two hits as well. Lehigh Valley left 10 men on base and were 1-12 with RISP.
Saturday–The battle for last place continued Saturday in Rochester with the ‘Pigs doing all they could to secure last place in the Rochester 7-4 victory. Rochester scored first off starter Brandon Duckworth with a first inning run that Lehigh Valley matched on a Melvin Dorta (4) solo homer in the 4th. Rochester took the lead right back, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning. Duckworth left in the 5th, with an apparent leg injury having gone 4.2 IP 7H 3R (2ER) 3BB 2K. A two run homer by Andy Tracy (15) tied the game in the 6th, however a complete implosion by the previously unscored upon Antonio Bastardo(0-1) left the ‘Pigs with little chance of victory. Bastardo gave up 4 runs on 6 hits in his 0.2 innings of work. Andy Tracy added his second homer of the night (16) a solo shot, for the final 7-4 margin.
Sunday–The ‘Pigs got on the board first in the 3rd inning on an Ozzie Chavez RBI single. They added another run in the 4th on a Matt Rizzotti RBI double. Rochester made it 2-1 in the bottom of the inning, but a Cody Ransom RBI single gave Lehigh Valley their two run margin back in the 5th. Rochester scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th, one on a costly error by Cody Ransom, and hard luck starter Brian Mazone left with the score tied at 3. He went 6 innings, giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits. He walked one and struck out 5. An RBI single by Andy Tracy gave the ‘Pigs the lead back in the 7th, but again they did their best to give it away when a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Michael Schwimer ultimately led to a Rochester run, once again tying the score. Lehigh Valley showed some resiliency, specifically John Mayberry, whose solo homer (14) in the 9th gave the ‘Pigs the lead back once again. Scott Mathieson came in to pitch the ninth and earned his 21st save. Ozzie CHavez, Andy Tracy, John Mayberry and Brian Bocock all had two hit games for Lehigh Valley.
Notes: John Mayberry currently has a 11 game hitting streak during which he is hitting .425 (17-40).
—Mike Stutes has a very impressive outing in relief of Brandon Duckworth on Saturday night going 2.1 innings, striking out 5, and not allowing a hit.
—Brandon Duckworth left the game Saturday with an injured ankle, which occurred when he was backing up home after a a single. No word on the severity of the injury.
—Cody Ransom had two errors on Saturday, giving him 19 on the season at AAA.
—Brian Mazone has a very respectable 3.71 ERA yet his record of 6-12 is one of the worst in the league. He has been the victim of very little run support.
Interesting how they won’t pitch to Rizzotti even at AAA. Two IBB’s today. Guess that’s what happens when you have a .207 hitter behind him in the order.
