Around the System, Starters, Lower Half

Lakewood

Brody Colvin, 20, 23 starts, 6-7 with a 3.17 ERA; 122IP 109H 39BB 108K, 1.20 GO/AO; .236 opp. avg., .214 vs. LH, .253 vs. RH, .206 with RISP, 1.21 WHIP, 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA since July 1. After a rough April, Colvin has been dominant throughout the rest of the year. His innings are being monitored as he is already at 120+.

Trevor May, 20, Clearwater, 16 games, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70IP 53H 61BB 90K, 0.76 GO/AO; .212 opp. avg., 1.63 WHIP. Lakewood: 8 starts, 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA; 48IP 34H 18BB 67K, 0.87 GO/AO; .199 opp. avg., 1.08 WHIP. Totals: 24 games, 10-7 with a 3.97 ERA; 118IP 87H 79BB 157K, 0.80 GO/AO, .207 opp. avg. May seems to have gotten both his confidence and his control back in Lakewood.  Hitters have struggled against him at both levels, as May clearly has Low A mastered.

Jon Pettibone, 20, 20 games, 5-5 with a 3.77 ERA; 105IP 94H 36BB 62K, 9 HR allowed, 1.53 GO/AO; .242 opp. avg., .185 vs. LH, .278 vs. RH, .187 with RISP, 1.24 WHIP, 2-3 with a 2.36 ERA since July 1. A strong season for Pettibone who is ready for the next level. Phils 3rd round pick in 2008.

Colby Shreve, 22, 21 games (16 starts); 6-5 with a 3.77 ERA; 100.1 IP 87H 28BB 71K , 0.97 GO/AO, .234 opp. avg., .223 vs. LH, .242 vs. RH, .294 with RISP, 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA since July 1. 1.14 WHIP. A nice season for the Phils 6th Round pick in 2008. He has proved he is healthy and ready for the next level.

Josh Zeid, 23, 38 games (10 starts), 6-4 with a 2.74 ERA; 7 saves; 88.2 IP 76H 23BB 91K, 6 hr allowed, 1.12 GO/AO, .220 opp. avg; 1-2 with a 2.27 ERA in 10 starts; .163 with RISP, .218 vs. LH, .236 vs. RH, 1.12 WHIP. Ze1d started the year in the bullpen with a moderate amount of success and was moved into the rotation, where he pitched in college.  Through 9 starts he has pitched very well. A 10th round selection last year, a double jump to Reading next year isn’t out of the realm of possibility based on how the Phils have handled those similarly situated in the past.

Jarred Cosart, 20, 14 starts, 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA; 71.1 IP 60H 16BB 77K; 1.93 GO/AO; .224 opp. avg., .234 vs. LH, .218 vs. RH, .314 with RISP, 1.06 WHIP. Cosart last pitched 6 weeks ago and is shut down for the season with elbow soreness.  He is on the road to recovery and is expected to participate in the FLorida Instructional League.

Nicholas Hernandez, 22, 8 starts in Lakewood, 3-1 with a 1.61 ERA; 56IP 38H 8BB 52K; 0.82 WHIP; .191 opp. avg. Hernandez was dominant in the early going this season before being shut down in May with injuries.  He made two rehab starts in the GCL in mid-July but has not pitched in a game since.

Williamsport

Mario Hollands, 21, 11 starts, 4-2 with a 3.83 ERA; 51.2 IP 46H 13BB 50K; 1.00 GO/AO; .240 opp. avg., .288 vs. LH, .214 vs. RH, .310 with RISP; 1.08 WHIP; After two awful initial starts Hollands has been extremely solid going 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA in his last 9 outings. Has shown very good control.

David Buchanan, 21, 9 starts, 2-0 with a 4.10 ERA; 41.2 IP 39H 14BB 17K; 2.03 GO/AO; .247 opp. avg., .257 vs. RH, .238 vs. LH, .271 with RISP; 1.27 WHIP. Solid numbers.

Craig Fritch, 22, 12 games (7 starts); 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA; 34IP 22H 26BB 34K; 0.60 GO/AO; .180 opp. avg., .224 vs. LH, .117 vs. RH, .189 with RISP; 1.41 WHIP. 15th round draft choice this year out of Baylor.  Innings being limited because of college season, Fritsch has pitched well, albeit with control issues.

Lisalberto Bonilla, 20, GCL: 6 starts, 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA; 32.1 IP 32H 5BB 38K .246 opp. avg., 1.67 GO/AO; Williamsport: 4 games (3 starts); 1-2 with a 7.53 ERA; 14.1 IP 17H 9BB 7K; 1.06 GO/AO; .293 opp. avg. Adjusting to A Ball from Rookie Ball.

Ervis Manzanillo, 20, GCL: 7 starts, 3-0 with a 2.16 ERA; 33.1 IP 21H 11BB 33K; 1.86 GO/AO; .183 opp. avg., Williamsport: 3 starts, 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA; 11.2 IP 6H 9BB 9K, 0.67 GO/AO; .140 opp. avg.  Pitched very well in GCL and still very early to consider his NYPL numbers.  There is reason for optimism based on his numbers.

Percy Garner, 21, Hit hard in both of his starts, Garner is currently on the “reserve” list.

Eric Pettis, 22, 14 games (5 starts); 7-0 with a 1.32 ERA: 4 saves, 47.2 IP 33H 4BB 51K; 1.07 GO/AO; .192 opp. avg., .187 vs. LH, .196 vs. RH, .129 with RISP. 0.78 WHIP. After a full college season, the 35th round pick out of Cal Irvine has been moved to the bullpen to limit his innings.  His numbers simply couldn’t be much better.

GCL

Jesse Biddle, 18, 8 starts, 3-1 with a 3.06 ERA; 32.1 IP 28H 9BB 39K, 0.93 GO/AO; .228 opp. avg., .219 vs. LH, .231 vs. RH, .333 with RISP, 1.17 WHIP. A nice beginning for the Phils 1st round pick.

Colin Klevan, 19, 7 games (6 starts), 0-4 with a 7.82 ERA; 25.1 IP 32H 10BB 19K, 0.90 GO/AO, .302 opp. avg., .209 with RISP, 1.66 WHIP.

Lendy Castillo, 21, 11 games (4 starts); 2-1 with a 2.41 ERA; 33.2 IP 27H 15BB 29K, 0.81 GO/AO; .223 opp. avg., .219 with RISP.

Tyler Knigge, 21, 8 games (3 starts); 0-2 with a 4.13 ERA; 24IP 21H 11BB 23K, 1.19 GO/AO, .228 opp. avg., .194 with RISP.

Miguel Nunez, 17, 6 games (4 starts); 1-3 with a 5.49 ERA; 19.2 IP 19H 14BB 14K; 1.21 GO/AO; .257 opp. avg.

  1. Have we ever been this stacked? We have 4 top of the rotation prospects…and a ton of projectable mid-rotation/bullpen guys.

  2. Nick Hernandez’ absence is a concern. He hopefully will be able to pitch in the instrct’l games post season. Worth monitoring.

Schreve is being still carefully groomed in re-gaining his arm strength, and likely will do even better at Clwtr in ’11…is my bet.
Buchanan doesn’t seem to miss many bats. [Past week: a Buchanan vs. Buchanan–Buchanan won!]
Garner seems a wholesale rebuilding job. He has the physical attributes but they are scattered through his pitching. It could take the instructional games AND next season to refine his mechanics…but there could be a lot of power pitching there if it is brought together. Think closer.
The gem of this draft class is who it should be: #1 pick, Biddle. With careful care and feeding he–IMO–will turn out to be a future essential part of the starting rotation. A scary tall lefty pitcher when he gets his secondary pitches fully developed. That he has shown a familiarity with the strike zone is a large plus. Still growing at 6’6″…he could reach near Randy J. size by 21-22. (6’8″–6’9″??)

By almost anybody’s count, that is an outstanding gang of pitcher-prospects.

  4. I think Aumont will be in Reading somewhere…not ready for the Hyatt switch to the pen..maybe Jesus Sanchez as set up guy to DeFratus who starts off at AA as the closer..maybe start off Hernandez in A – CLW as a starter and Shreve or Petibone will be in relief..don’t forget Julio Rodriguez..he will be #1 starter in Lakewood…Biddle, who has lots of talent, might not see Lakewood in the beginning of the season. I would have him in XST till late May or June as he will be only 19.

  5. Julio Rodriguez with 6 K’s in 3IP tonight.

I know I’m not the only person dying for some first hand info on this kid.

  6. The Puerto Rico Gem, Julio Rodriguez is making his presence felt. GREAT numbers. Gotta consider him close to all the other sparklers at Lakewood.

I certainly can see him starting at Lakewood in ’11. When he can move up to Clwter will be shown only after he throws about 75-100 innings there. But adding that great other group from Lakewood ’10 to Clwtr roster should reward the still-suffering gang of the Clearwater faithful.

Biddle likely would come out of instructional lg and extra spring training..and end up at Wilmpsprt. We can look forward to watching those games and be pleased…if he continues to show the goods, is ambitious, and coachable.

The interesting next (post Werth) draft should provide us with 2 extra early draft picks. Could we draft an exciting third baseman; a good catcher; a shortstop? Somewhere out there they must be waiting for us………..
