Around the System, Starters, Top Half

A look at the starting rotations for the Top levels of the Phils Minor League system with a look at the lower levels coming up early next week.

Lehigh Valley

Drew Carpenter, 25, 22 starts, 7-9 with a 3.90 ERA; 122.1 IP 122H 45BB 91K; 1.09 GO/AO; .264 opp. avg., .231 vs. LH, .291 vs. RH, .223 with RISP; 1-3 with a 4.81 ERA since July 1; 1.37 WHIP. Carpenter has not pitched well at all recently.  His spot on the 40 man may be in jeopardy if this continues.

Brandon Duckworth, 34, 21 games (14 starts), 5-4 with a 3.45 ERA; 88.2 IP 75H 37BB 92K, 1.14 GO/AO; .234 opp. avg., .261 vs. LH, .210 vs. RH, .205 with RISP, 3-1 with a 3.65 ERA since July 1; 1.26 WHIP. Duckworth has done all that has been asked of him and done it well.

Brian Mazone, 34, 23 starts, 6-12 with a 3.81 ERA; 137IP 142H 22BB 86K, 0.79 GO/AO; .265 opp. avg., .298 vs. LH, .253 vs. RH, .246 with RISP, 1-5 with a 4.09 ERA since July1, 1.20 WHIP. Not easy to have twice as many losses as wins with a 3.81 ERA and 1.20 WHIP unless you play for Lehigh Valley.

Ty Taubenheim, 27, 16 games (6 starts) between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 4-4 with a 4.71 ERA; 57.1 IP 53H 24BB 39K; 0.87 GO/AO; .249 opp. avg., 1.34 WHIP.

Vance Worley, 22, 22 starts between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 9-5 with a 3.29 ERA; 131.1 IP 131 H 41BB 96K; 1.20 GO/AO; .261 opp. avg., 1.31 WHIP. A good year for Worley after he struggled during the second half of 2009.  Still too early to judge the jump to AAA.

Nate Bump; 34, 20 starts, 8-4 with a 3.35 ERA; 107.1 IP 123H 25BB 54K, 1.43 GO/AO; .293 opp. avg., 1.38WHIP. Was placed on the DL on August 7th with a shoulder issue.

Reading

Mike Cisco, 23, 14 starts, 3-8 with a 5.09 ERA; 74.1 IP; 84H 18BB 42K, 1.10 GO/AO; .279 opp. avg., .264 vs. LH, .297 vs. RH, .276 with RISP; 10 HR allowed; 1.37 WHIP. Has struggled with both injury and ineffectiveness this year.

Yohan Flande, 24, 23 starts, 8-7 with a 4.26 ERA; 135.1 IP 146H 39BB 68K, 1.45 GO/AO; .275 opp. avg., .261 vs. LH, .283 vs. RH, .270 with RISP; 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA since July 1; 1.37 WHIP. Has been either really good, or really bad.

Austin Hyatt, 24, 23 games (21 starts); 11-5 with a 3.04 ERA; 124.1 IP 100H 35BB 156K 0.93 GO/AO; .220 opp. avg., 1.09 WHIP.  Dominant in High A. Time to see if it transfers.

Drew Naylor, 24, 22 starts, 9-8 with a 4.64 ERA; 137.2 IP, 146H 35BB 85K, 0.82 GO/AO, .274 opp. avg., .224 vs. LH, .318 vs. RH, .258 with RISP, 3-2 with a 4.10 ERA since July 1; 1.31 WHIP. Has been generally mediocre with shorts stretches of excellent pitching.

JC Ramirez, 22, Clearwater, 11 starts, 4-3 with a 4.06 ERA; 64.1 IP 63H 17BB 55K 2 HR allowed, 0.63 GO/AO; .259 opp. avg.,1.24 WHIP; Reading: 11 starts, 3-3 with a 5.37 ERA; 67IP 76H 21BB 52K 10HR allowed; 0.73 GO/AO; .299 opp. avg., .321 vs. LH, .250 vs. RH, .226 with RISP; 1.45 WHIP. TOTALS: 22 starts 7-6 with a 4.73 ERA; 131.1 IP 139H 38BB 107K 0.68 GO/AO; .274 opp. avg. The step up to AA has been an adjustment for Ramirez, an adjustment that may continue the entire season in 2011.

Clearwater

Phillipe Aumont, 21, Reading: 11 starts, 1-6 with a 7.43 ERA; 49.2 IP 55H 38BB 38K 1.16 GO/AO; .284 opp. avg. CLearwater: 12 games (6 starts); 2-3 with a 4.21 ERA; 51.1 IP 48H 30BB 56K 1.42 GO/AO; .254 opp. avg; 1.52 WHIP. TOTALS: 23 games (17 starts); 101IP 103H 68BB 94K; 1.28 GO/AO; .269 opp. avg; 1.69 WHIP. Has suffered through horrible control issues most of the year but still possesses the same raw talent at 21.

Heitor Correa, 20, 22 games (20 starts); 6-11 with a 5.63 ERA; 115IP 138H 48BB 73K, 13 HR allowed, 1.35 go/ao; .299 opp. avg., 1.62 WHIP; .241 vs. LH, .350 vs. RH, .280 with RISP; 1-4 with a 6.38 ERA since July 1. After a good year at Lakewood last year, a definite step backwards this year for the still young Correa.

Jesus Sanchez, 22, 21 games (20 starts); 8-6 with a 2.77 ERA; 120.1 IP 98H 30BB 78K 0.77 GO/AO; .225 opp. avg., .242 vs. LH, .210 vs. RH; .180 with RISP, 1.06 WHIP; 3-2 with a 2.43 ERA since July 1.  A lot to be excited about as Sanchez continues to progress in his 2nd full year on the mound, after starting his career at catcher.  Will certainly progress at least a level for the start of 2011.

Edgar Garcia, 22, 30 games (6 starts); 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA; 70IP 67H 22BB 71K, 9 hr allowed, 0.94 GO/AO; .246 opp. avg., .295 vs. LH, .213 vs. RH, .247 with RISP, 1-2 with a 3.16 ERA since July 1. 1.26 WHIP. After a year filled with problems last year,. Garcia has again begun to show glimpses of his potential.

Matthew Way, 23, 17 games (16 starts); All games except two at Lakewood; 7-5 with a 3.90 ERA; 92.1 IP 88H 30BB 85 , 1.46 GO/AO; .257 opp. avg., 1.28 WHIP. Has been on DL for almost a month.  Pitched very well in Lakewood but still to be determined if that translated to the next level.

  1. Only excitement on this list is who gets dropped from the 40-man.
Sanchez might be useful but is running out of options. Worley should have never been added to 40-man early. Ramirez does not appear special.
Naylor and Carpenter might need to be dropped. Flande’s leftiness will likely save him until the middle of next year.

  2. AGREE ON CARPENTER AND WORLEY. NEITHER HAS IS EVEN CLOSE TO SHOWING MLB POTENTIAL.

Hyatt seems to have the best chance to make the 25 in ’11 if he shows well in the AFL where he should be sent. Worley exploded after throwing several good innings tonight; he seems to have some goods but needs to overcome one issue or another to get closer to the bigs.

Along with DeFratus, Hyatt could provide bullpen help sometime during ’11.

The best gems are a little behind/lower than these guys…maybe 2-3 years. THAT time could be special for so many–absent trades–marvelous guys bringing the lower teams up to sparkle along the way to the bigs.

Gotta be optimistic with this gang. And now the newest standouts are Biddle and Dugan. And Garcia 2b, Hernandez 2b ( could be an outstanding leadoff guy) let alone Alvarez, Singleton (has made adjustments? to their adjustments?)..Valle…on and on.

Great time to be a Phils fan: you can look to the future as well as enjoy the present.

  3. Worley seems like the best of the bunch in AA/AAA…sadly.

Not to bash Vance but he likely ends up as a middle reliever/spot starter type of player. There’s value in that though.

  4. I have man love for Hyatt. I don’t know why, BUT with that being said. With his power numbers, I wonder if they consider converting him to the closer position if he struggles in the rotation for Reading.

  5. How long before aumont goes to the bullpen full time? It’s pretty obvious that he’s best suited for that role

  6. Lets not give up on JC Ramirez yet. He’s young for Reading so all he needs to do now is learn. Next year hopefully we’ll see some improvement. I pretty much agree with NEPP on Worley. When he was drafted I remember scouting reports saying his ceiling was back end starter or setup guy, and I think he’s still got a shot at those things but if he doesn’t quite reach that he’s still got value.

  7. I agree that ramirez still has potential. Law had him ranked as his 101st prospect going into 2010. He didn’t have a great year, but who knows how much being traded impacts a 21 year old. Give him time.

  8. Hey worley had an average year in AA last year and this year came into his own. I hope JC does the same with the expierance he’s had at reading this year. He’s still young and there’s room for improvement.

  9. I think it usually gets announced around the last week in August so probably not for another 7-10 days.
