  1. Thoughts on Julio Rodriguez who basically was perfect for 4.1 innings while striking out 7?

Is he a top 10 candidate?

Obviously he’s behind Cosart and Colvin but he really can’t be significantly behind any other pitcher in our system. Hyatt, Ramirez, Aumont, Biddle, Worley. I’d put him behind Biddle and Hyatt right now.

  2. PP, how comparable are Cosart and Colvin to Gavin Floyd and Hamels a few years back? Are we looking at one to be an ace and one to fall back to 3-4 guy?

  3. I can do the box scores

I think J-Rod is really breaking out at Lakewood, he needs to stay there for the remainder of the year. His strikeout numbers and ERA are both signifcantly better than Cosart/Colvin.

  4. Interesting that just a couple days ago the Phillies brass were explaining why Hyatt wouldn’t be promoted to Reading. It’s a good move. He’s always been old for his league, but has always pitched very well. Reading should be a good test for him, the hitters are better and more patient and the park is less forgiving than CLW. I hope I can catch a game in which he starts during the little bit of the season that is left. He should have been promoted weeks ago.

  5. Question of the day: Which GCL Phillie is tied for 1st on the team in HR; 1st in RBIs, 1st in ABs, 2nd in doubles, 2nd in SB, 2nd in hits, 1st in SLG?

Answer: Geancarlo Mendez, a 20 year old. On the downside his BA is .238 and OBP .304.

Shreve was smacked around a bit yesterday but Julio Rodriquez bailed him out.

    Nice hitting by Barnes (4 – 5, 2 R, 3 2B, HR 5 RBIs & BB) Singleton rested one game and came back with a 3 for 6 day.

Edgar Garcia had 5 IP, 3H, 0R, 5K, BB. He gets a mention quite often. He might be making a comeback.

Sanchez has pitched since 7/27. What’s going on there? He was the listed starter and was scratched.

BJ Rosenberg is alive and well. Since coming back from injury, he’s pitched 11 1/3 innings, 7 H , 0 R, 15K and 3 BBs.

Dugan and Unda both had 4 hits in yesterdays’ GCL game.

  6. It may be a bit early to jump on this so quickly.. but the new pickup for Clearwater, Derrick Loop, has been quite the arm out of the pen. Loop’s number have been pretty solid, and as of late has looked to be the “go-to” arm picking up a couple of wins in his last 3 outings, and dominating the younger hitters in the Florida State League. Also seems to have that devastating pick-off move working for him if a runner happens to get aboard.

  7. Even though the management said they were keeping Hyatt at clearwater he played well enough to force them to promote him. Hope he does well.

  8. I mentioned yesterday that Hyatt had nothing left to learn in CLW. I guess the Phillie brass heard me (HaHa).

  9. What a terrific time to be a Phillies’ fan. So many promising arms in the system lead by Colvin. I haven’t seen him pitch in person yet. I hope he stays at Lakewood this season so I have a chance still to take the ride down from Philly to see him before he’s promoted to Clearwater. When do you see him pitching in Philly? mid-season 2013?

    Like

  10. Yes, I recall reading a quote from RAJ at the Phillies web page, “Well, we were perfectly content to keep Hyatt in Clearwater, but I heard that Bellman feels he has nothing left to prove, so we figured we better promote him.” Go Bellman! 8^D

  11. Hyatt call-up is well deserved just seems kinda late in the year. Will he only get 4 starts? Not sure who that leaves as starters in Clearwater: Sanchez, Correa, Garcia, Aumont?, Way? (off the DL yet?).

  12. Brody has rebounded from a very slow start to perhaps surpassing Cosart as the #1 pitching prospect for the Phillies. He has been the “model” of consistency for the past two months. I feared we may have lost him in the Oswalt trade but then I realized that Ed Wade is still a GM. Brody is a shining example of going over slot for your draft picks. To think, we almost lost him if we didn’t apply that strategy. Hopefully, the Phillies do whatever is neccessary to get Frazier, Walter, Musser and Paquet.

  13. Ive heard conflicting reports on Colvins fastball. Where does he normally sit at and is it flat or does it sink?

  14. So we have Bastardo to the Phillies, Ty Taubenheim promoted to AAA, Hyatt to Reading..so who goes to Clearwater -Trevor May? Beal? I like to see Kyle Carr promoted. He nearly 24 years old and hasn’t giving up a run in 12.67 innings..too many walks 8 but I curious to see what he could do in high-a.

  15. Thru 4 in the GCL:

Biddle- 4ip, 1h, 0r, 2bb, 2k. Down to a 3.16 era. Liking this pick more and more with every outing.

Dugan- 2 for 2, run, walk. Hitting .611 so far in the GCL.

  16. PhxPhilly, Cloyd has been starting, but I bet you are right that *if* Way is ready to come off the DL, he will get the starts.

bob_M_in_LA, if memory serves he works in the 92-94 range and then dials it up if he needs it.

I thought Bret had an excellent question in comparing Hamels/Floyd to Cosart/Colvin. I’d love to see someone who knows more about this stuff answer that one. My first thoughts are that C/C have more velocity contrasted against H/F each having a signature breaking pitch.

    Like

  17. Thanks Boston Phan.
I think Colvin has a better breaking pitch and Cosart a ‘better’ (slightly more velocity and movement) fastball.

I’ll have an update later today after talking to a few peeps.

Does anyone have any idea what this kid throws?

  20. This from PGACrosschecker posted in another thread:

“SCOUTING REPORT (3/1): Rodriguez could be the top pitching prospect from Puerto Rico this spring. He has a pro-profile body at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, and looks to be still growing and getting stronger. Rodriguez attends the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy, where many of the top prospects from the island have trained and gone to school in recent years, so scouts will have a good chance to fully evaluate him. Rodriguez has a long, loose arm action and little effort to his delivery. His fastball has been up to 91 mph and his breaking ball gets good spin and depth but will need to be speeded up from its current upper-60s velocity.—DAVID RAWNSLEY”

It was also noted he had a sore arm for much of the early season.

  21. When Floyd was at Lakewood in 2002, I think he had a no-hitter in late July and followed it up with another almost no-hitter. He must have been using his curve back then, because the Phils took it away from him for the next 2 years and he threw mostly fastballs that hitters sat on. When he came to the majors, it was like he forgot how to throw that devastating curve. He found it again with the White Sox though.
Floyd now is a big, hulking power pitcher, something that was always projected for him when he was in his teens. Colvin and Cosart that type of caliber, but are excellent pitchers. Hamels always had his changeup and that made he able to pitch anywhere and climb fast. Colvin and Cosart are probably penciled into the Phils rotation for 2014.

  22. upper 60’s velocity!? that’s crazy (not necessarily in a good or bad way)

pretty sure Randy Wolf has the biggest difference between his FB and CB velo in MLB (20mph), 91mph and upper 60’s would be more than that.

    Like

  23. The enigma who will be taking the ball for the Dodgers tonight throws a harder FB and a slower CB than Randy Wolf. Vicente Padilla’s average FB is 92.3 and his average CB is 64.4. I watched a little bit of that two hitter he threw last time out, and Vin Scully was referring to his CB as a “soap bubble.” A few of them were clocked in the 50s.

    Like

  24. Thanks for sharing Chuck. Glad to see Rodriguez clocked in the low 90s, as the few game reports I’ve seen on here seem to have him sitting on 87-88 mph. He’s still way young and I imaging could experience a nice little uptick in velo over the next few years.

  26. I think the Hyatt promotion had more to do with the Nate Bump DL stint pushing Taubenheim (sp?) up to Lehigh, thus opening a spot for Hyatt at Reading. Shame that an injury to a AAAA guy and the promotion of a AAAA guy to AAA had to cause this to happen. Now we get to see if Austin can have success with these last few starts in his jump from A+ to AA.

(trying to break the record for upper case A’s in a post here)

  27. We’ll know real soon whether Bastardo is able to help from here on out. His control is key for him to be effective. Seems to lose it when trying to move his FB around, at about 94 mph. Walks have really hurt him during his limited MLB time with the Phillies.

    Like

  28. Hopefully Bastardo stays healthy and gets in a groove. If Romero finds his control as well the phillies could be set in the bullpen. Well except for Lidge of course, lol

  29. Bastardo was solid when he was healthy. He was only demoted due to a numbers game last time anyway. He’ll help them out again.

Even with his control issues, he seems like a better option than what Romero is giving us right now…Romero really seems like he’s in a funk.

  30. Isn’t it about time to make Aumont a closer. That is where the need is. It’s not too late to salvage something of the season. What they are doing sure isn’t working.

Let’s see what Eric Pettis can do in the Sally. sign the rest of the NYP League.

  31. Isn’t it time that we drop Aumont from the top 10 lists until he really starts to produce huge numbers seeing as how horrible he was earlier? Doesn’t mean we can’t put him back, but shouldn’t there be a penalty for horrible performance?

  32. I have a question about Herndon.

I know a long reliever is a long reliever – but I just do not see what the Phillies see in him now. If they kept him on the roster this long I guess they are in for a penny in for a pound, if he has future value.

I have a question, after you Rule 5 a player for a year, can you then normally assign him to AAA next year? Maybe not, if he has no options left after 4-5 years in the Minors.

Can anyone help me with this in General, and Specifically with Herndon?

    Thanks

  33. yes he can be sent down next year.. if he has options left..he becomes like every other guy at end of regular season…i also believe that he just has to be on regular seaon this year…not post season roster

  34. I know the Phillies have an excellent farm system and are one of the best in baseball at prospects and evaluating their talent…

So how did we let Carlos Monasterios get away? He is clearly major-league ready, and has been lighting it up it Los Angeles. Are there maybe more talents in our system that are major-league ready that we’re holding back on too?

  35. i read an article concerning aumont somewhere and the front office said they wanted to keep him in the rotation because they wanted him to refine his seconday pitches and control which would obviously be easier with more innings. i do however think they should convert him to a reliever at the beginning of next year because i dont see him as a starter at this point

  36. I find it interesting that 20-year-old Carlos Perdomo is actually holding his own after jumping from the GCL to the FSL. Not sure if it’s just a temporary rental, but he’s been with Clearwater for a good stretch of time now. I know the geographically the change is easy, but that’s still quite a jump up in talent.

  40. Monasterios was not MLB ready last year. The Dodgers took and shot and it panned out. Monasterios wasn’t even a Top 10 guy last year. Stuff like that just happens. We all know the Bell and Victorino stories concerning Rule 5 selections ….

    Like

  41. I think Monasterios with the Dodgers this year is a lot of smoke and mirrors and luck. His ERA may be in the mid 3.00’s, but his FIP and xFIP being over 5.00 would suggest over the long-run that he’s just being lucky and it will eventually catch up with him. You’re talking about a righty who throws mainly in the upper 80s.

I’m sure when the Phillies sat down and decided who to protect on their 40man the last two choices were Jesus Sanchez and Monasterios and they went with Sanchez. I can’t really say that it was wrong since Sanchez is much rawer(having converted from catcher) and he’s had an extremely good season in Clearwater.

If you could take it back I’d much rather have Monasterios than Joe Savery, but I can understand the Phils not giving up on a 1st round pick after his first season at AAA. This season has shown he’s pretty much worthless as a pitcher at this point though.

  42. Also note that Monasterois’ team plays in a cavernous ballpark. He has a 2.84 ERA at Dodgers Stadium and a 4.82 ERA on the road. That 4.82 is exactly the same ERA that Herndon has.
