Lakewood Weekly Report (8/2-8/8)

4. Lakewood

Recap: Lakewood had an uncharacteristic week, going 2-4-1 (including a suspended game that ended in a 2-2 tie, but won’t be resumed although the stats will count).  Nonetheless, the ‘Claws remain in first place in the SAL North at 25-17, 1.5 games ahead of Hickory.  Overall, they are 67-45.  Lakewood needs to go 18-9 over the last month of the year to set a franchise record for wins.  Somewhat of an abbreviated report this week due to time constraints on my end…Hitters: Rough week across the board.  Lakewood has scored a mere 22 runs over its last eight games.  Only noteworthy performance this week was a power surge by Sebastian Valle.

  • Jiwan James: 5-25, 2B, RBI, 7 K / 1 BB, 3 SB
  • Jeremy Barnes: 6-20, 2 2B, RBI, 6 K / 3 BB
  • Alan Schoenberger: 4-24, 2 2B, HR, RBI, 11 K / 2 BB, 2 CS, 2 E
  • Leandro Castro: 5-29, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 7 K / 1 BB, 2 SB, E
  • Sebastian Valle: 5-27, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 7 K / 2 BB
  • Anthony Hewitt: 1-14, 6 K / 0 BB

Pitchers: Pretty good performances by all the starters this week.  The starters now have a collective 2.78 ERA since May 30.  Trevor May continues to overpower SAL hitters, although his walks did pop up again in his two starts this week.

  • Luke Wertz: 2.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 K / 1 BB (5 ER this week after giving up 4 in his first 53.2 IP)

  • Trevor May: 12 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 15 K / 6 BB

  1. I guess Hewitt will be repeating Lakewood next year. Going to be crowded though. Dugan, Alvarez, Altherr, Santana, Eldemire and Hudson need to play. Not to mention Collier. Eight guys for 3 or 4 spots

  2. that’s funny I was just thinking about how crowded the of would be in lakewood next year also. If it was up to me I would let hudson repeat, eldermire begin in NYP, this will bring some ridicule but put hewitt at 3d just because there seems to be nobody ready to play there including alonso and hewitt needs ab’s. If dugan could play 3d I’d prefer him to hewitt going back at 3d. Alvarez, santana, alther and collier would share time. Wow this will be one of the most loaded of’s at any level for us ever I think.

  4. have to admit I got caught up in the small sample size of an excellent april for hewitt. I’m almost ready to give up on him. this year will be key.

    Hamels for the year .149/.149/.191 for a .340 OPS

    hmmm…Hewitt wouldnt even be the best hitting phillies pitcher

  6. Julio Rodriguez has been spectacular in Lakewood this year. He’ll be 20 in a week or two. He has 54Ks in 35 IP. Last night he went 4 1/3 0 H, and 7Ks. They are using him as a “secondary” starter. He comes in after the starter’s done his 5 IP. He’s the youngest pitcher on the team (beats Colvin by a week or so). Have you seen him pitch?

    Singleton was given the night off a game ago and came back with a 3 – 6 yesterday. I thought he needed to rest a game or two. Barnes is hitting .429 in his last 8 games. after a 4 – 5, 3 double, HR and 5 RBI night. That’s a season for Hewitt.

  8. IMO, they shouldn’t stunt the other OF’s developmental growth, while trying to squeeze something out of Hewitt. They should hold Hewitt back in extended spring next year. Alvarez, Dugan, Altherr and Santana should be the OF at Lakewood. Hold Hewitt, Hudson and Collier back since none of them ever hit at Williamsport, much less Lakewood. Have no idea what they will do with Eldemire.

  9. Rodriguez has been flat-out dominant lately – his last four outings: 18.1 IP/33 K/2BB.

    What’s the scouting report of his stuff? He’s kinda flown under my radar

  10. I bet Eldemire starts the season at Clearwater. As for the other OFs, I’m finding it very difficult to handicap now what will happen next year. The only things I feel certain of is that James and Castro will be in Clearwater, and Santana and Collier will begin the year in Lakewood. Dabbs will probably move up to CLW too. As for Hewitt, Altherr, Hudson, Dugan, Alvarez, Beltre, and Unda, they will probably be assigned depending on how everyone performs in Spring Training.

    My best guess for LWD’s OF to begin next year is Santana, Collier, Hewitt and Hudson, based on my perception of who among these guys is thought of as farther along by the minor league development team and where guys have gotten most of their ABs this year. However, I would prefer to see Collier, Santana, Altherr and Alvarez. That’s a high ceiling, high risk squad, just like this year.

  11. Next season’s Lakewood, maybe , if current trends continue: RF- Santana CF- Hudson LF/DH- Alvarez/ Altherr. 3B that might be a rub. I seen on the BlueClaws blog in Spring Training that Dugan played a couple of games at SS, so I’d try him there. Chris Duffy has come on in GCL so I say another maybe, The WPT guys, Alonso and Jake Smith look to be all right defensively but haven’t hit much. 1B might be a question also, Jeffrey Cusick has come on a bit lately in WPT, , also from GCL you have Chris Duffy and Patrick Murray ( generally the top GCL hitter through the season, Also Dugan is a possibility there, Also from the GCL, really coming on lately Geancarlo Mendez who has become the AB’s leader and is tied with Duffy for HR leadership with 5. C- I’d go with Rupp/Lanning , and for the Middle Infield I go with the Williamsport guys, Cesar Hernandez and Edgar Duran , backed by Matt McConnell.

  12. What about Dugan? Dugan already showed the team enough that they started him in NYPL. He’s only in GCL now because he got hurt . He is lock to go to Lakewood.
    Miguel Alvarez is hitting so well at Williamsport, maybe they jump him to Clearwater.

  13. Jeff O, I think someone else posted that he is in the upper 80s with his FB and has a nice change in the lower 80s. I cannot remember more specifically than that, though.

  14. mike77, I know what you’re saying about Dugan and that’s what makes this so flipping complicated. However, since he hasn’t really had a chance to play in the NYPL, I think they will likely start him out there next year; basically next year is a do-over for him. Of course, if he tears it up in Spring Training, they will have no problem sending him to LWD.

    If he can play SS, that would be like a Christmas present. However, one would have to think that if that were a possibility he would be doing it now. He’s also a little big for that position.

  15. Already the Miguel Alvarez to Clearwater next season season begins.
    Sounds like a reprise on this season’s Leandro Castro starting in Clearwater thing.

    Dugan I like as a possibility at 1B or 3B as above, given the iffy personnel situation at those positions.

  17. Dugan is RH, so he could be a 3rd base option. I just wonder, if he has the arm for it. It seems if he had the ability to play the position, they would have tried him there already.
