‘Pigs Weekend Report

Friday–Durham completed their sweep of Lehigh Valley with a 9-2 victory over the ‘Pigs Friday evening at Coca Cola Park. The Bulls built the lead early and were ahead by a score of 5-0 after five innings off of starter Drew Carpenter (7-7). Carpenter lasted six innings, giving up 5 runs on 7 hits. Just about every time Lehigh Valley put a runner on base, the threat was ended with a double play ball, as Durham turned five on the evening. Both Melvin Dorta and John Mayberry had 2 hits apiece for Lehigh Valley.

Saturday–Another night, another loss, this time to Buffalo 4-1, as Lehigh Valley began a quick 4 game road trip.  Joe Savery (1-9) had a fairly typical outing, giving up 4 runs in his 6 innings of work.  The ‘Pigs fell behind early and were not able to make it close with their only run coming in the 9th, when Ozzie Chavez scored on a John Mayberry ground out.  Both Antonio Bastardo and Scott Mathieson threw scoreless innings in relief.

Sunday–Yet another one run, extra inning loss 2-1 to Buffalo ruining a excellent outing by Vance Worley. A two out RBI single in the 10th inning by Nick Evans off of Michael Schwimer (0-1) gave Buffalo the victory. Lehigh Valley scored their lone run in the 4th inning, on an RBI single by Andy Tracy.  That lead held until the 7th when a Fernando Martinez solo homer tied the game at one, ending Vance Worley’s scoreless streak at 30 innings. On the night he went 7.2 innings, giving up one run on 5 hits.

Notes: Lehigh Valley is now 1-9 in extra innings and 11-29 in one run games, last by a wide margin in the International League.

Melvin Dorta started in RF on Saturday evening as Lehigh Valley was playing with only 2 outfielders on their roster with the release of Chris Duffy earlier in the day.

Antonio Bastardo has not allowed a run in 13 games with Lehigh Valley (11.1 IP).

–In what has become a somewhat regular occurence with the ‘Pigs, pitcher Brian Mazone was forced to pinch hit with two on and two out in the 8th inning, when the pitchers spot came to bat.  Mazone struck out.  Lehigh Valley was playing with Paul Hoover, their back up catcher as the only position player available off the bench, as they were two position players down with the call up of Domonic Brown and the release of Chris Duffy.

Transactions: Outfielder Chris Duffy was released on Saturday after Lehigh Valley saw his production continue to fall throughout the year. After a bit of production in April, it has been a fairly consistent free fall for Duffy, who has struck out 99 times in 346 at bats, simply an unacceptable number for a leadoff hitter.  Duffy ends his Lehigh Valley career at .243/.306/.361 with 5 HR 34 RBI and 12 SB. Back up to Lehigh Valley is OF Rich Thompson, who hit .299 in 127 AB’s with Reading since he was sent down back in June.  He gave the Reading lineup life with 13 SB’s in 13 attempts.

  1. Here is the NOwheels plan. Bring up Mayberry and the Riz and release Dobbs.
What good is a PH who can’t hit or a third baseman who can’t field.
Bastardo is OVERDUE to come up.

  2. Vance Worley is the Phillies best league ready prospect in the minors today. If something happens to any of the 5 Phillies starters, Worley will be in the big league rotation, and I say with a chance to make an impact in September, like Bystrom and Happ did in ’80 and ’08.

  3. nowheels, I agree totally. The Phils just don’t give their young guys a chance. Every other organization uses their young guys in the pen, and when they have injuries, except the Phils.
