Jonathan Villar had a 12-game hitting streak end this week.  His nine steal week was capped by a four steal game versus West Virginia on Saturday, including a straight steal of home in the first inning…the team stole 22 bases and was only caught 5 times, an 81% clip.  They entered the week having been successful on just 57% of their steal attempts…Domingo Santana ended the week back below .200 at .191.  His biggest strength early in the season was his ability to draw walks, but he has drawn just five over the past two weeks.  He remains among the SAL leaders in BB with 25 and continues to lead in Ks with 60…the Blue Claws made just five errors as a team on the week…the Blue Claws added Jeff Lanning to the roster from Clearwater.  He was the Twins 8th Round pick in 2008.

  1. Who goes to Williamsport to join the college draftees?

Santana is a no brainer. Anyone else?

  2. That is a good write up.

It’s good to see Colvin stringing together some really good starts.

So far the pitching prospects have out-performed the hitting prospects by a large margin. Hopefully some of the hitters rebound.

  3. Hopefully , pp can shed some light on dominic brown, for me. I heard he isn’t a good outfielder by some, and others say he is good defensively cant figure it out. this morning for example the writeup by phillychuck stated, he needs to improve, and just read on recliner gm his defensive is good.

  4. I know its only been 10 or so games for Singleton and 8 or so starts for Cosart but but it looks like they could have jump to the #2 and #3 prospects in the system or vice versa. It helps that most of the prospects above them have underperformed to date.

I’m not trying to completely jump the gun on singleton but based on the the peripherals statistics it just seems that his current stats aren’t a fluke. I’m not trying to say he’s gonna hit .400 but I’d expect well above .300.

I’m more surprised in the homers than the walks and batting average. Its really great to see the early power.

  5. I’m pretty excited about Colvin’s progress. Being a high-school signee who only pitched a few innings last year, I was sure he would stayin extended spring training and then, if that went well, so to Williamsport. After his first few starts, I figured he would then go to Williamsport. I think what they did with Colvin is very aggressive and seems to be paying off. I look forward to seeing what he and Cosart can do, hopefully they will make each other better with their performance.

  6. Colvin pitched his best game of the season yesterday hitting 94 on the Lakawood gun in his 96 pitch, 7 inning, 7K, two hit shutout.

  7. Injury to Hernandez sucks, but I am very intrigued by Rodriguez. Excellent peripherals, young, good listed height last year in GCL. Hope he performs well enough to stick

  8. DiamondDerby, I was going to ask the same question. Who will drop to Wmspt when their season opens and who will replace them? Looking from the bottom up on the stat sheet, Santana, James, Valle and Hewitt. I would not move Valle to Wmspt. He has to figure it out in Lakewood. Santana makes a lot of sense because of his age. Hewitt would be a major setback and therefore I don’t think they’ll move him. James is second on the team in RBIs, mostly from the leadoff spot. He’s been hot in his last 10 games hitting in 9. Unless he collapses, he stays.

On the pitching side, I thought Colvin was assured a bus ticket up until the last two games. He’s actually pitched well in 3 of his last 4. He’ll have to prove he can continue to pitch like he has in those games.

  9. Thanks for the write-up, davput. I could not be more excited about this team. I apologize to all of you whom I disparaged for liking Cosart more than Pettibone when we were doing Top 30. I was wrong and couldn’t be more enthused about it!

As for Singleton, I remember saying he could be a top ten prospect by the end of the year, but I think top 3 is aggressive. He’s doing really well against older guys, but it is early and there are other minor leaguers who have proven themselves at higher levels.

Very exciting to hear Colvin hitting 94 that late in the game. Nice to have that kind of velocity, now let’s hope command of the FB develops along with his secondary pitchers.

  10. My money is on Cosart. From what I’ve seen on video, in person and then following his numbers he has the kind of stuff #1 and #2 Starters are made of.

If his head is on right and he continues to mature physically I have no doubt he’ll be a starter in the bigs within 2-3 years. Having said that I would not move him up a level this year opting to let him finish in Lakewood.

Maybe next year he starts in CW and moves to Reading mid season if he continues to get hitters out. Possibly putting him in our rotation sometime in 2012.

  11. Way’s change up tonight is at 72-73 and fastball is sitting at 87 in the third inning. Nice separation but probably needs another mile or two on his fastball or a third pitch to be considered major league prospect.

  12. Everyone for lakewood is playing well tonight. Especially singleton. Valle is playing very well in the past week or so. Santana was like an inch or so from a homer. Also Singleton just started an really nice DP.

  13. And singleton is 3-3 with 4 RBI. I’m sure he will hit a dry spell in due time, but this start is pretty impressive

  14. Wow! One of the more impressive debuts I can recall. Beats D’Arby Myers already. Wish you could get the Claws on TV. Anyone know if that is possible? YouTube of a local minor league broadcast maybe?

Yes! Just saw Claws are in Greensboro early July again. An hour and 15 minutes from me. I will send a report again, especially on Singleton.
