Some injury related newsworthy items this Friday evening…
Lakewoood Pitcher Nicholas Hernandez was placed on the DL with left shoulder weakness just a day after he won the award for Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week. Luke Wertz was activated to take his place on the Lakewood staff.
Wilson Valdez cleared waivers and was assigned to Lehigh Valley. The trip may be very short lived as Jimmy Rollins left the game Friday evening appearing to re-injure his calf.
Relief Pitcher BJ Rosenberg, who started the season in Reading and was placed on the DL very early in the season was activated and assigned to CLearwater. Roster room was made by assigning infielder Keoni DeRenne to extended spring training.
Lakewood announcer stated Pettibone left his last start Thursday after 5 innings with “a little shoulder stiffness,” but won’t miss his next start.

What do you guys think the odds are on the Phillies drafting shortstops/3B this upcoming draft? Do you think they might head to Latin America to scout some?
I think they need to get a big-level SS prospect in the system. Obviously it could be four to six years before he would be brought up, but better now than later.
(Besides, you need to keep the system stocked so you don’t have down years.)

I dunno. Drafting a SS/3B because you NEED one is a sure way of getting subpar talent out of your draft. Best player available.

Regardless of BPA, I’d be shocked if we went with a toolsy HS outfielder. I’ll guess it is going to be a RHP, likely HS.

The only position I doubt the Phillies will draft high is College OF. Best player available. Hopefully the best player available is a catcher or LHP.
As far as Shortstop is concerned, a Phillies’ Assistant GM said today that Jonathan Villar had more physical gifts for offense AND defense than Freddie Galvis. Per blueclaws blog.

BPA is a good strategy, but usually the BPA is a pitcher. At some point, you gotta draft someone out of position due to necessity.
But I don’t want any more raw prospects like Savery – not first overall at least.

Savery was a good prospect for 1B. Unfortunately, they let him pitch. He had a good bat at Rice and should have developed that instead.
I’d rather not see another Anthony Hewitt type player. Tool sheds that can’t hit rarely make it to the bigs.
When in doubt, get top pitching. You can ALWAYS trade a pitcher for help elsewhere.

A team never needs to draft out of need for a position. If you have good talent in the system, they can be traded to fill a position of need.
This isn’t the NFL where players are rarely traded. If the Phillies need a SS in a couple of years and have a bunch of quality arms in the system, they will be able to find a trading partner without much difficulty

I have a feeling that if Savery had been a 1Bman all along, he’d be hitting .220 in AA and we’d all be in here talking about how the Phillies need to convert him to the mound.

Since Savery spent 3 years as a regular and pitcher at Rice, I don’t think Raw is the word.
The LaMar podcast says Singleton could have broken camp at Lakewood, but LaMar held him back so he could become more settled before starting to hit.
Villar, they compare him favorably to both Galvis and Hanzawa offensive and defensive talent wise, but not as advanced defensively for now.
Also some Clearwater stuff.

Alan – exactly! .220, with NO POWER, is even generous.

As stated before these draft is strong, in catchers ,and righthanded pitching. Weak in middle infielder and college hitters few lefthanded pitchers according to law and others that I have read. I think the first round will be catcher or righthanded high school pitcher, been looking around couple kids seem to at where the phillies pick who are coming off injuires, but throw hard.

Draft is big in RHP and catchers. In te first 3 rounds need to get those two.

I’m good with lots of RHPs and catchers – can’t go wrong with that.

An interesting note, Rizzotti’s SONAR was 7th best for hitters. In other words, although he is a bit old, his stats have been decent enough to make him a decent prospect.

Rizzotti is what 24 in double a , he is really coming on , but where would he play for us , looks like a trade tool for pitching along with others , trying to figure who beside brown, would other teams covet? may has been getting hit, no way they move cosart in my opinion.

How was Rizzotti’s defense at CLW? He looked really poor the one game I saw him at Reading. Very nice bat though.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong. Look at his peripherals. Increase in strikeout rate. The walk rate has increased a bit too, but largely they’re not too different from last season. With May we have a pitcher with dominating stuff but needed to refine his command to move forward. That would be the assessment after last season, and it remains the same now. Cosart has clearly topped May as the best prospect in the system though.
