RULZ, I think that it is because Castro is healthy now and he is the backup. Valdez was the third string. The Phils may lose him if another team claims him. You have to give Amaro credit for having backups to the backups like Valdez and Hoover; even if the AAA team doesn’t have a lot of exciting prospects, it does have capable backups at just about every posiion.
so what does everyone think this means for May? Are the hitters around the league getting the scouting report now or is he being exposed for having just a fastball? Or is it just a string of bad luck? Cause it seems like all of most recent outings have been pretty rough
4 of May’s last 5 starts have been pretty poor. He has a 9.00 ERA in those 4 starts. His K’s are still there (21K in 17 IP in the 4) but the H/9 (21 hits in 17 IP) have been bad and BB/9 (12 BB in 17 IP) have been horrendous.
All players hit a slump, May is no exception. He is young and has been moved along pretty quickly. Look up the stats on some of the older players like Schmidt and Randy Johnston, they are pretty much the same.
May lacks control and command. Listening to the game last night, he hit a batter in the helmet with one of his pitches to go along with three walks in 3 1/3 innings . Interesting to note in addition Gose leading the FSL in triples, Overbeck just missed a homer last night and he had to settle for another double to lead the league in doubles with 15 and he still leads in homers with 9.
Very often, slumps are due to losing pitch command. That might be what’s happening to May. He is either leaving it down the middle (hits) or missing off the plate (walks). Until something definite emerges, I think we should just assume normal growing pains.
The Eastern League notebook was released today and there was a nice article on Dom Brown. It says about a fast track to a promotion to AAA before a thumb injury. I still think he will be with Reading into June. Whats your opinion?
Does anyone know how many times mathieson has pitched back to back games b/c I haven’t noticed in the box scores recently that he has done it? If not then what is the club waiting for, you can only baby a players so much. I wonder if may has gotten a stint on the dl with an “upper body injury” it may be time for one. thanks
Law has Brown rated as the 7th best prospect. Brett Wallace as the 15th, Taylor as the 19th, and Cosart as the only Honorable Mention guy. 25 guys ranked
I listened to May’s outing from the Fort Myers web site. The broadcaster said his mechanics were screwed up and he had no command or idea where the ball was going. Before he threw his first pitch, he was listed as 6’5″ 235 lbs.
Brown will not be rushed because he won’t be in Philly to start next season. There’s just no reason to rush him to AAA now. I believe that Matheson has pitched back to back days twice. The first time, in April, he struggled with his control on day 2 but more recently, he pitched well on day 2. I like Matheson too and think he’s ready but there’s no spot for him now in philly unless they decide to give Herndon back. Bastardo was lights out in his short time in AAA and 2 lefties sets their bullpen up much better. Also, with the way Kendrick has bounced back, I don’t think they’ll be sending him down when Happ comes back.
On May, I think riverrat has it right. He’s young, he’s working on mechanics, he’s in a slump right now. He’s shown he can dominate, so I’m guessing he’ll bounce back.
On Brown, I’m surprised to hear about a secret fast-track plan. I’m thinking they’ll take the Taylor route with him. The only caveat to that thought is they clearly think very highly of the Domonator. I was pretty psyched to see him jump into Law’s top 10.
“You have to give Amaro credit for having backups to the backups”
I guess watching Bruntlett and So-So finally got the message accross. In today’s game everyone is important. No excess baggage this year . Hoover is having a career year already.
Was reading Klaw’s top 25 prospects on espn and he had Cosart as honroable mention:
Honorable mention
Jarred Cosart, RHP, Philadelphia. He could also qualify as the player who made the biggest jump. I may be getting slightly ahead of myself here, but Cosart showed up in spring training sitting in the mid-90s, prompting one evaluator to tell me he was “the second-best arm in the minors,” after the guy at the top of the list. And so far, Cosart is lighting up the Sally League, with 33 whiffs and just only walks in 28.2 innings. Previous ranking: NR
looks like klaw has cosart rated above drabek, who isn’t on the top 25 list. i wish i thought that klaw knew what he was talking about so i could get excited about this list.
Question of the day – if Oakland offered M. Taylor back to the Phils for Francisco and Herndon, would you bite? It’s a lot harder question than it would have been two months ago, eh?
Just so I don’t get a million “it’s never going to happen” responses – please note that this is purely hypothetical exercise focused solely on the relatively values of the players, not the true logistics or likelihood of such a trade.
Maybe I should have made it a little harder as I, too, would still take the trade. Perhaps I should substitute Happ for Herndon – that’s a closer call.
I would trade any two prospects in the system (not named Domonic Brown and Jared Cosart) for Michael Taylor.
Herndon has no trade value. Fransisco is arbitration eligible this year so that lowers his value, IMO.
Herndon is horrible. Of the 320 pitchers who have thrown at least 12 innings this season, he ranks 320th in H/9 (16.78), 314th in WHIP (2.11) and 304th in K/9 (3.65).
Schwim is vindicated!! Keith Law ranks Jarred Cosart in his top 30 prospects update saying that a talent evaluator called Cosart the 2nd best arm in the minors behind STRASBURG. Unreal. What a signing. I know all the people that were on this site at 12 am in August of 08 when he signed and it was a great night.
agree that the Herndon fandom is getting a little manic. If you wouldn’t trade Taylor for Francisco straight up (which I doubt any competent GM would) than adding Herndon doesn’t change that at all. I love velocity as much as the next guy, but he’s real hittable, and has been of much of his career. Despite all the amateur scouts that love his darting fastball, he’s an eminently fungible commodity.
OK then. Well, in his 387.2 IP in the minors, he average 10.0 H/9 and a Kendrick-esque 4.8 K/9 last year as a full-time reliever. His stuff might look pretty once in a awhile, but right now, his numbers give no reason to think he’s going to be any good.
Once Happ comes back Figs will be released and KK can go to the pen. The only reason Figs is around because they like him as a longman in case KK gets trounced. With KK becoming a fairly reliable pitcher, I think there’s no reason for Figs to be in Philly. Could use Mathieson or anyone else who has the ability to pitch. I’d much rather have Mathieson in the pen over KK. KK is a starter and needs innings whereas Mathieson is a reliever and is clearly ready now.
When Happ returns, if he , indeed , returns before the September 1 expansion of the roster, they would send him on a re-hab assignment of at least a couple of weeks. They will see how he pitches in that assignment and also evaluate the performance of the current starters. The likelihood is , if all current starters are healthy and pitching up to standards, Happ will assume a bullpen role to start off, and Nelson Figueroa will be designated for assignment at that time.
As to Herndon, at some point Baseball was divided up into games. In most games Herndon has appeared in he has done well. A few bad outings, which even some statistical types would say are a result of “bad Luck” , BABIP , or something like that, have tended to skew the significance of the statistical mish-mash of “pecentage points per 9 innings pitched” or what have you. Philly is well set with ” end of game” type relievers as of now, and may be even moreso with the likely return of Madson and/or Lidge. Herndon is a promising pitcher and would be well suited to finish the season as “Long Man- Mop-up Man, Spot Starter” until the completion of the season, and he could be augmented with the roster expansion of September 1.
KK will not be the long man. They will send him down to AAA and will serve as the 6th man in this rotation. Figgy has pitched in how many games this month? That’s why KK goes back to LHV and continues to work on his secondary pitches and remain stretched out.
Lets assume you are right about Herndon being long man at some point. To bring him in with men on is not wise. I believe he has to start an inning to have a little leeway.
We can disagree about Happ not starting after a time. Gads you can make a strong case he was their best pitcher last year. He has to start in the post season .
Mayberry seems to be feeling better.
