Jonathan Singleton homers in his debut

I was very high on Singleton this winter, so him being sent to Lakewood now makes me happy. It makes me even happier that he’s homered in his first game. Talk about it here, because I know that a few people here will make mention of it in 3 other unrelated previous postings.

  1. 18 years old + 7 years of Howard contract = 25 year old Rookie 1st Baseman! Hey…a man can dream.

  2. This could make Howard tradable after 2013. There will be a 1 1/4 year window after that before he becomes a 10/5 man.

  3. You guys make me laugh. He hits a home run in low A ball and, all of a sudden, he’s making a former ROY and MVP and perennial 45 HR per year guy expendable? I like Singleton too, but, at this point, this kind of talk is just silly.

  4. And Cody Overbeck will be the Phils triple crown third baseman by the time Singleton make his first ML start at first. Well, maybe not quite but after tonight’s action he does lead the FSL in hitting, rbi’s and home runs.

  5. If singleton shows to have serious hitting ability I would bet that the Phillies move him to LF for a year or 2 while Howard is still there. I remember reading that he has very good athleticism.

If the Phillies like Singleton enough, and I think they do, they will find a way to keep him during Howard’s contract. I mean they know it wouldn’t be smart to move him just for 1-2 seasons of an aging Howard.

Another note on Singleton, I feel the reasons for holding him back in XST (fielding) were a little BS. They just wanted to give Ruf some time in Lakewood before moving him up. We all know they couldn’t have Ruf and Singleton on the same team with the 4 OFs.

  6. It funny I was reading scouting reports on draft and singleton was one of the guys favorite players, loved him , why do you think its bs they kept him back to work on his fielding?. in my thought if this kid becomes a elite prospect, just imagine what you could get for a howard in a trade, if you trade like the marlins do and get quality for quality, we could get a ramirez type or johnson.something to think about

  7. The problem with that is that the marlins tend not to trade guys with 25 million dollar salaries. If, and this is a huge if, we did end up trading howard we would probably have to eat a chunk of his salary.

  8. LOL. An 18 year old hits a HR in low A so now multiple comments about trading one of the top 10 Phillies in history by 2013, so he does not become a 10 and 5 guy.

  9. I am pretty psyched to see what Singleton can do too. He showed good plate discipline last year – let’s see if he can keep that up against much better competition. I won’t be too upset if he doesn’t hit for much power (though he’s off to a good start), as he’s still young and everyone seems to think the potential is there. Go Jonathan!

  10. Agree he might get some time in LF. so that he can get playing time in 3-4 years. He’s no Greg Luzinski; he has some athleticism, so he should be able to handle that. If you have a guy hitting .280 with 20+ HRs in LF with some ceiling left, it’s an ideal situation to have him play there until Howard’s contract is up. That would be major depth.

Another fundamental principle: The world will be different in 3 years. Let’s wait till then to see how he fits in.

  11. agreed. This thread seems designed to elicit the comments that are so annoying. I imagine that’s kinda what James had in mind, now they are here and not in the Josh Zeid QandA thread.

  12. ““It was more or less about keeping that club in tact. Let’s let Overbeck finish the first half and see how that goes. ”

Translation: We think Overbeck is off to a flukeish start and we don’t buy it.

  13. It seems like the Phillies like to wait until around the draft to bump guys up, so not promoting Overbeck is not a big deal, especially since there is a good chance that his numbers are anomalous. If he still has triple crown numbers after 200-250 ABs, then move ‘im up and replace him with Bushini, who is old for Lakewood and performing solidly.

  14. I am not saying to trade howard , just wondering if this kid becomes a stud how they handled it. Having a future hof making 25 million with a stud in the wings who would make 400,000 a year.

  15. I had a chance to lead off this thread and I passed it up.
There just didn’t seem to be any conclusions to draw from a HR in low-A ball. Even if it did come in his first game. How wrong I was. I now know the name of the next Phillies first baseman who’s going to replace what’s-his-name.

  16. the anti- howard that has always existed here continues. although it has now reached certifiable insanity. just bring up mathieson and let this basically moribund minor league system develop some legit prospects besides brown.

  17. If we’re drawing conclusions from small samples, Singleton ain’t replacing anyone if he doesn’t bring that .250 OBP up.

  18. And a .250 BA. But wait, he has a 1.000 SLG.!

I can’t figure him out! Is he good or not?

  19. I am not sure if they think Overbeck is a fluke, they just like to make sure improvement is real before they promote players. A month just isn’t long enough for a conclusive determination. If he hits like this for another month, Overbeck will be promoted and, I am guess, so will Brown.

  20. Don’t mean to derail the discussion, but did anyone comment on J.Sanchez pitching a complete game 5 hitter, with 8Ks?

I was suprised to see a complete game, I didn’t think that happend all that often in the minors given pitch counts and the ideal of getting everyone some work.

Good call and I’m disappointed nobody has mentioned that. It seems between Sanchez, Hyatt, and Hernandez we have 3 pitchers that have gone incredibly deep into games considering the conservative approach to pitch counts in the minor leagues.

It’s past incredible how successful Sanchez has been in just 2 years since being converted to a catcher. Gotta love him.

  22. Are you people serious? It was obviously prognostication for YEARS down the line and solely based on the slight chance that Singleton develops into a top prospect. Jesus, talk about jumping to conclusions. I even stated that’d be “best case scenario”. I’d love it if years down the line we had such a problem as having two top flight first basemen to choose between. Nobody hates Howard, calm yourselves down.

  23. Patrick your right love howard, but would love to be able to replace quality guys who are getting older with younger quys to keep this team good. Instead of having to overpay guys like ibanez, and others because we havent develop the talent to take over for aging players.

  24. So Gillies to DL, Rizzotti to AA, Ruf to Clearwater, Singleton to Lakewood… got it.

  25. Now we have the large sample size required. Batting .375. Wow. Now hear this, Singleton is good!!!

    🙂

Just kidding. Small sample size or not, it’s nice to see a guy we are focusing on get some hits in his first games. If nothing else it erases that initial pressure and doubt.

    Good job, Jonathan.

  26. I guess what confuses me is that I wouldn’t think that either of the Howard “camps” would be advocating a trade. Either:

    (1) He is a unique superstar who merits the recent contract – then why would you want to trade him; or

    (2) He is a very good player but not a unique talent or a true superstar, who is likely to suffer an age related decline & likely not be worth 1/2 of the recent contract, in which case he will be untradeable.

I suppose their are intermediate options, but on the whol,e he’s either going to live up to the contract (and hence not be someone you would want to trade, or he won’t, in which case he won’t be very tradeable.

  28. Jon’s legit– he’s from our neighborhood in SoCalif, played Pony Ball with my son when they were 11 and 12, then they competed against each other for the last 4 years. I said it when he was 11 that he had a sweet swing, even as a chubby kid with long legs, and if he dialed in some patience and learned the strike zone as he grew up, he’ll go big.

Looks like he did just that, and is really blossoming…
