The Lakewood BlueClaws have been kind enough to arrange for a Question and Answer with reliever Josh Zeid. Zeid, a 6’4, 210 reliever was named the Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month for the Month of April. Zeid, 23, was chosen in the 10th Round of the 2009 draft out of Tulane University. Zeid spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Vanderbilt, and then transferred to Tulane. He was the Gatorade Connecticut High School Player of the Year his senior year in high school.
Zeid started 15 games at Williamsport last season going 8-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 79.2 innings. He walked 20 and struck out 72, with a WHIP of 1.05. The Phils made a decision to transition him to the bullpen, specifically the closer role with his 2010 promotion to Lakewood. He has seen action in 13 games for the BlueClaws, going 2-0 with an 0.86 ERA and 4 saves. He has thrown 21 innings, allowing just 11 hits and 2 earned runs. He has walked nine and struck out 18, with a WHIP of 0.95. The opposition is hitting .157 against him, .107 with RISP.
He is a New Haven, Connecticut native, and majored in English at Tulane with a minor in Political Science.
Feel free to post your questions for Josh in the comment section below. Hopefully we will have a post up with his answers by the weekend.
Josh–
Your time on the mound at Vanderbilt was not as successful as that which you were used to in High School, as en elite prospect coming out of high school. What has changed in your approach once you got to Tulane and has continued into the Phillies Farm System to earn you the success you have been seen?
Thanks for your time!!

Josh, you were raised in Connecticut and went to school in the south, now you’re living in New Jersey. Describe the differences in these three areas. What are your impressions of this area? What has suprised you about this area?

Josh, thanks for agreeing to do this. How has the transition to the bullpen been for you? How do you prepare yourself mentally for this role? Do you miss being a starter?
Keep up the good work!

Josh – what is the difference in your mentality going into a pitching appearance when you’re in a save situation versus a non-save situation?

Josh – on a completely unrelated subject, and only if you have time after answering the other, more pertinent, questions raised here – please share your thoughts on your experience at Tulane (my daughter starts there in August).
Many thanks.

How much did pitching in college help you in moving on to minor league basbeall. Do you feel you could have ever made the same jump from high school to the minor leagues, if you had gotten drafted?

Josh – do you feel more pressure being the ‘closer’? If so is there any way you’ve dealt with this pressure? Also, how much do you rely on scouting reports in the minor leagues compared to college?

When you joined the Phillies organization, how much did they ask you to change your mechanics/pitching motion, or pitch selection, or development of a new pitch. What changes have you been asked to make this season, moving from starter to closer and were you asked to make this move at the start of spring training.
— Allentown, apparently not signed it at moment

Josh,
How would you compare the instruction you received at the college level with that at the pro level, in terms of the different things that are stressed, the different methods of “practice” and how your approach to the game has changed, if its changed at all.
Thanks,
James

Do you feel like your at an advantage or a disadvantage coming out of college and being 23 in low A ball?
Is there pressure on yourself to try and rise through the ranks as quick as possible due to being a bit behind age wise?
Disclaimer: just wanted to get a honest opinion on a guy coming out of college and playing against 19-21 year olds, i’m not condoning NOT going to college haha.

Josh,
Did you move to the bullpen because the Phils had an excess of starters at Lakewood and they figured a mature college pitcher could adapt, or did you move because the Phils figured your stuff played better out of the pen?
What is you “out pitch”to lefties?
What do you have to continue to work on to get better and advance?
Do you have a timetable in mind for yourself?
Who are the players at Lakewood you think will be top-flight major leaguers in a few years? Why?
