Around the System–C

A look around the system at catcher, a position that is surely worrisome for the Phils after the loss of several prospects (Marson, Jaramillo, D’Arnaud) over the last two years.

Lehigh Valley

Paul Hoover, 34, .269/.338/.403; 1HR 8 RBI; 7% BB rate, 26% k rate; .143 vs. LHP, .302 vs. RHP; .290 with RISP. 43% CS Rate.  Hoover has given all that can be asked of him and then some, however he is what is he is, which is a 34 year old stop gap if necessary.

Dane Sardinha, 31, .333/.368/.556 in 36 AB’s; 2 HR 8 RBI; .091 vs. LHP; .440 vs. RHP; .545 with RISP (7-11). 27% CS rate. See comments on Hoover.

Reading

Tuffy Gosewisch, 26, .231/.296/.369; 2 HR 6 RBI; 8% BB rate, 20% k rate; .188 vs. LHP, .245 vs. RHP; .286 with RISP. 22% CS rate. Gosewisch is known for his handling of pitchers which he does well, however he is an average hitter at best.

Kevin Nelson, 29, .200/.231/.240 in 25 AB’s. 0HR and 3 RBI. Has thrown out 2 of 6 trying to steal on him.

Clearwater

Tim Kennelly, 23, .230/.385/.361; 1HR 10 RBI; 19% BB rate, 9% k rate; .200 vs. LHP, .250 vs. RHP, .471 with RISP (8-17). 20% CS rate. Starting to heat up, with a very nice BB/K ratio.  The average with RISP is very nice, but this continues against only High A competition.

John Suomi, 29, .353/.389/.647 in 17 AB’s.  1HR and 4 RBI. All 8 runners trying to steal on him have been successful.

Joel Naughton, 23, .320/.320/.440 in 25 AB’s.  0HR and 3 RBI’s.  Has been on the DL for the last 2+ weeks. 13% CS rate.

Lakewood

Sebastian Valle, 19, .226/.260/.301; 1 HR 8 RBI; 5% BB rate, 23% K rate; .188 vs. LHP, .246 vs. RHP, .179 with RISP. 39% CS rate. Early, but the line is concerning against similar competition as last year. High K rate, not hitting lefties at all and generally failing with RISP.  Bright side, gunning many down and he still is just 19.

Torre Langley, 22, hitting .357 in 14 AB’s. Has caught 5/8 stealing.

Kyle Lafrenz, 23, hitting .333 in 12 AB’s. 10% CS rate

  1. Valle’s in the running for biggest disappointment in the system so far this year, especially with Travis D’Arnaud hitting .328/.362/.547 in High-A. Here’s hoping he gets going soon!

  2. It’s time to draft two catchers again, one college and one high school. Like in 2004 with Jaramillo and Marson.

  3. Depressing. There’s one real catcher in the system, and he’s at low A ball and he’s not doing well (so far, anyway). I view Kennelly has a guy who is probably something of a hitter, but not a real, bona fide catcher.

But there’s no reason for concern – Chooch is not going anywhere anytime soon. The soonest we are likely to need a new catcher is probably 2013 or later and I’m thinking later. Chooch is a late bloomer who just keeps getting better and is a master with the pitching staff.

  4. The confusing thing is that it really did appear that Valle turned the corner in the winter league. So, maybe we’ll see that Sebastian again sometime soon.

  5. We did draft Marlon Mitchell last year…I’d say there’s a good chance he sees time in Williamsport this season.

  6. I was reading the ba scouting, this year is suppose to be loaded with catchers and right hand pitchers, weak in middle infielders. The phillies will mostly likely look hard at catcher, you cant have enough and if chooch got hurt we have really no one.

  7. Mathieson had a hitless/walkless 2 K inning pitching on back-to-back nights. That was one of his hurdles to overcome, and the breaking stuff was good again. I think we could see him and Bastardo back up before too long depending on how Romero progresses.

  8. Valle’s played a lot of baseball for a 19 year old. He played 98 games on US soil and 55 games in Mexico last year. He might be a little tired. He’s also caught many of them. He’s essentially a College Freshman and he’s played a lot of games.

  9. Good timing, bemoaning the loss of Jaramillo after he finally has a good game. 3 for 4 and he Phantom-tagged out a runner at home plate.

Gosewisch continues with his defensive prowess he likely will see a game or two in the majors. Looks kind of smallish and ill-equipped for big offense, I’d say, but he might hit enough to fill in here and there, maybe even for a season or two, if he backs up the Right Guy. Maybe even Mr. Ruiz, the current National League Leader in On-Base-Percentage.

Kennelly rate of throwing out runners is higher than I expected. Maybe Naughton returns, and this “down under tandem” can move up a bit.

Valle- since the Mexican Winter League is 99% Mexican League players , and Mexican League pitchers are known for an array of soft breaking balls, perhaps Valle is down some due to a lack of soft breaking balls thrown his way. But really, the numbers are not that bad, considering, and maybe he steps it up in the warm weather.

Seems to me there are alot of good catchers available in draft both prep (Justin O’connor, the Canadian Deglahn(something like that) ) and College ( Yasmani Grandal (who may be selected before Phillies spot, Micah Gibbs, and the guy from Minnesota whose name starts with KV (not necessarily a 1st round candidate).

  10. Marfis–

I learned to take your comments for just what they are…fill in the blank____, after your call for Ozzie Chavez and JJ Furmaniak to the majors last year. Memories.

  11. Be that as it may, the Phillies did not win the World Series last season, that’s an indisputable fact. Who can definitively state that the reason why was not that they did not recall all those guys on September 1, give the bench players eligible for the playoffs more playing time, and , thereby give the regular players more frequent resting down the stretch?
